Switch nes online. He couldn’t get his head around “picking” enemies up, but he loves the esthetic of it.
He cried that the new wario ware is shit too.
And that the deku tree died in ocarina of time yesterday

He’s played it, I showed him the background duck trick and he was bored of it like I was back in the day.

Super Mario Bros 2 is awesome. Probably my favourite 2D Mario as well.

Mario 64 is no where near as tight in controls as the newer stuff.
Coming straight off 3D World, 64 feels clunky or at least not as ‘accurate’, even in the turning circle.
Graphically it’s fine, nostalgic, but being the first 3d games they are a little rough.

Yeah. I think you have to remember it was specifically built for the N64's analog stick too, and that has its own feel to it. Mario also slips around more, regardless of surface and sometimes does an annoying U-turn with a wide turning circle when you simply want to do a 180.
It's definitely dated, mechanically, but nothing came close to it for years.
The best advice I can give for Mario 64 is, if you want to enjoy it, don't fight the camera. Let it do its bizarre thing and go with it as much as possible. Once you rotate that camera, even on an open level, it can get confused and try worming back to its original angle, which is where most of the game's frustration comes from.
There's nothing like timing a jump just as the camera makes a sudden but small swing and you end up leaping off a stage, cliff or into a wall.

Yeah, I bounced right off 64 on the 3D collection. Camera is so bad it essentially ruins the rest of the game, and Mario's turning circle is fucking awful. I've no idea how people can prefer this to Sunshine.
I've gotten the N64 running at pretty much full speed on my dodgy box, and most of it just hasn't aged well at all. As far as the sub goes, between Rare's stuff on the 360 and Nintendo's own re-releases, it's pretty much pointless, unless I get full-screen full-speed and slightly cleaned up 1080 and Wave Race. The wresting games were absolutely brilliant, but that's never going to happen.

Get it in the US. It might be cheaper.

Just got Quake and found that it has gyro aiming even when using the Hori Split pad. Anyone found other games that also do this?

Specifically with the split pad? Never used one but if you mean gyro aiming when using a normal controller, Monster Hunter Rise has gyro controls when using the Pro Controller
And BotW

I meant specifically with the split pad. I've never even heard of other games that do this, you always have to use the joycons or pro controller usually.
I didn't even know there was a gyroscope inside the console itself but there's got to be.

Looking more likely that Goldeneye is coming to NSO. Looks like Nintendo have just successfully appealed against its banning in Germany when it would have become unbanned next year anyway. Analysts think the only reason they'd do this is to get it on NSO.
Also Wave Race is confirmed to be coming along with Majora's mask, Smash Bros and Mario party.

Ocarina, Majora's Mask and Mario 64 is the N64 back catalogue for me
I don't have the fondness for Goldeneye that seems so prevalent. I had it back then but the springy aiming and droning music did my head in

It's the only N64 game outside of the wrestling one I've ever played. The 4 player splitscreen is the height of multiplayer gaming for me.
It's why I like my switch lite so much, get to play all the Nintendo games I missed out on. That's why I don't mind all the remakes and stuff they churn out.

I guess the question is if they're going to sort the technical issues!
Surely there's no reason everything can't look good and run at 60fps?

N64 stuff at 60fps? Nah. They won't go that far. That would require significant work on each individual game and the price of the NSO would be through the roof, I imagine.
A lot of games would need tweaking to support 60fps without throwing out bugs all over the place. AI that reacts on a frame by frame check, like with Goldeneye, would have double the reaction speed. 2D sprite animations would stick out like a sore thumb.
They should at least tey pushing the emulator in ways that limit slowdown and such. I think N64 games run mostly at 720p too, but as so many games use blurry textures, any kind of major bump wouldn't benefit a number of games either.

Ocarina is a given, best game ever and all that, but Majora's Mask is a very different Zelda experience and great in its own right

I think I like Goldeneye where it belongs: in my rose-tinted memory. I don't think it would hold up very well outside of that.

Yeah, I dug out my N64 last year to give some games a try, and Goldeneye actually made me feel a bit sick afterwards. It really is a massive shock to go back to it now, as is the case with most N64 games tbh. Though maybe the NTSC version would be better - comparing both PAL and NTSC versions of games together on the N64 app, it really is crazy how much smoother and responsive the latter ones feel, even though in most cases they're only a couple or so frames faster.

I'm ashamed to say all I've played so far on the NSO DLC is Mario Tennis, single player tournament. Stuck on flower cup like a pleb. I keep thinking there must be more buttons I should be pressing, but it's just top spin and slice.

Yeah there's no lob button that I could see, which is a bit odd for a tennis game. And what's with the weird black border at the bottom? None of the other games have it.

I thought that was because of the Switch interface but when I removed it that black line is still there. Regarding the controls I found this strategywiki.org/wiki/Mario_Tennis/ControlsWhich helps explain how to do lob shots and drop shots. I wish there was a switch level visible control scheme to refer to on the screen though.

I've played three of them briefly and struggled with controls with each, as the picture under three + screen doesn't really help all that much.
So far i played Mario 64, Firefox and Zelda. Mario it was hard to get the jumping right and to not drown and i couldn't look around. In Firefox, i was just clueless as to how to roll, summersault etc. It brought back memories of just how shit i was at the game.
Zelda, I'm sort of getting on with, but it's still hard to tell what the c and yellow keys are. Mind you, all this was with a migraine, so I'm amazed i managed anything.

Bought Luigi’s Mansion yesterday. Nice little game for Halloween, huh.
So far so good, really surprising how interactive everything is. Excellent graphics.
The only thing that put me off were the title and menu screens. Urgh, certainly not as slick as Nintendo menus. Then I realised it wasn’t Nintendo who developed this. The lack of Nintendo polish does stick out like a sore thumb.
I’m being picky, but ‘design’ is my thing. Feels like a great game otherwise, 2 hours in.
