Remembered I took a screenshot of some backup codes 3 years ago and managed to dig it out, ugh what a fucking bullshit system. 8 backup codes left you slags, better not run out before you launch switch 2 or I’m done

When does Skyward Sword actually let you play the game instead of putting you through this cringy, handholding intro?
Just got the red bird and I'm close to fucking it off.

Have to admit, the free rein you're given right out the door in BotW is liberating. SS is much more go here and do the thing, now do this next thing. Just enjoy the story and puzzles but don't expect too much by way of exploring (the sky is the closest thing to an overworld). It's all basically a series of dungeons, even the open bits

Yeah I don't really mind the go here and do this bit. But so far it's been an hours worth of run 2 yards, watch cringe cutscene, run another 2 yards to the next.
Just give me some dungeons!

There’s plenty of dungeons, the whole thing is just one big one essentially

How the fuck do you log in to your Nintendo account with this Google Authenticator bollocks, none of the codes are working. Why does Nintendo have to make it so difficult I had to contact support and get them to remove 2 step authentication, they did it no probs

Still to play Skyward Sword, but I dislike all 3D Zelda games that aren't BotW. I have played through Ocarina a few times and enjoyed it, but I couldn't get on with either Wind Waker or Twilight Princess. Just the pacing and rigidness is the complete opposite of what got me into those games growing up. They feel real slow, too.

I enjoyed my recent playthrough of Skyward Sword and there are certainly merits to the more structured approach but on the whole most big 3D Zelda's are fun while they last before I get tired of them usually around 3/4 of the way through. Links Awakening has always been my favourite with the original NES Zelda. Those are now joined by BOTW

The only 3D Zelda I don't rate is Twilight Princess because I didn't find it very interesting at the time. I'd try it again given the chance, although the artstyle is relatively boring

It was 1992 or 3 so yeah no guide. Me and a buddy used the map in the box to write notes and narrow down what we needed to do next. I was visiting my nan and my cousin had left it paused on the TV in the living room. I had a sneaky go and was amazed that you could just walk in any direction and it kept going. I only played it for a couple of minutes but it's all I could think about on the car journey home
I've tried the NES Zelda but found it way too obtuse. I'm pretty sure one of the dungeons is hidden under a particular bush you have to burn with no clue that it's there whatsover and stuff like that. Well done for getting through it!
I think I've possibly maybe finished the NES Metroid

I see Football Manager Touch is only coming to Switch this year. The Touch version is no longer being made for anything else.
I used to play FM many years ago and wouldn’t mind trying it on Switch. I wonder if it’s any good….

My joycon drift is getting worse. Weirdly, after some use sometimes sometimes goes away, but it's taking longer to go away now.
Will Nintendo take it for repair if it's three years old?

Apparently they repair them regardless of warranty.
Got Two Point Hospital Jumbo Edition for £25. Disappointed to find no touch screen support.

Zelda on the NES is definitely obtuse. Given the limited scope for artwork let alone subtle visual signposting It is definitely an experience of its time. I hold it in such high regard because of my personal experience with it and for the fact it understood the importance of freedom in sandbox games better than many icon fests of today. Breath of the Wild is most indebted to that Zelda than any other I feel but I'm glad many things have evolved beyond the obtuse sometimes confusing nature of the original Zelda

I completed Zelda NES as a 5 or 6 year old without a guide. I didn't even know anybody else that played games st the time, so had nobody else to bounce off. The game itself drops all the hints you need, but you definitely have to go out and find them. I wouldn't have patience for it now, but I loved making sense if them back then.

I wonder if it’s any good…. I brought last years switch game and to be honest it isn't great. I found navigating really hard. I was only using the analogue sticks/dpad though and don't know wether last year was the touch version or some weird mixing of the main game and touch versions. There are a fuck ton of menus and I found it really frustrating.

Breath of the Wild is most indebted to that Zelda than any other I feel but I'm glad many things have evolved beyond the obtuse sometimes confusing nature of the original Zelda Something to remember about Zelda on the NES is that it not only came from a period where games included manuals, players were expected to read the manuals. The US release at least (I can't speak for PAL or JP) also included a sealed hint book in case you found the game too obtuse even with the manual. And you were still expected to make your own maps when you felt necessary.
This was also an era where you were expected to talk about games with your friends, sharing game experiences. NES Zelda was a simple game by modern standards, with only a handful of meaningful discoveries to find in what (now) was a small world that was easy to explore and describe. Your friend telling you what to do and a vague area of where to do it was enough, because you could find the right spot within a matter of minutes. The internet has brought us more people to speak with, but interests are much further divided, game discoveries might not be more meaningful but the game worlds themselves are larger, and now you just look at a YouTube video that spoils everything anyway.

It has some great dungeons, and as mentioned earlier the overworld is more puzzle heavy than in other games too - has a slightly Metroidvania feel to the way you have to navigate around the land sections. At the time of release it certainly felt like a bolder and more ambitious Zelda game than Twilight Princess did, albeit with some very divisive elements.

Never played Twilight Princess as well. I have a modded Wii U so I should really get on that.

Never played Skyward Sword. Hmm, might need to try it.
Can’t believe I bought Mario Kart and Mario 3D without realising about these Nintendo games vouchers.
Luigi’s Mansion is on my hit-list next. Definitely nearing the end of the fantastic Mario 3D… although falling off the edge is why I die 95% of the fucking time.

Very early look at the expansion pack membership this morning. The Mega Drive and N64 apps use the US box art for their games, which is disappointing. On the N64 app you can switch between PAL and US Versions of games, rather than the Wii U's solution of speeding things up, which means our European neighbours might not be able to play at 60hz in their native language.
N64 also lacks any screen filters, but thats likely because they output to 720p.
Haven't had more than a few minutes to play anything as I have a job to get to!

How the fuck do you log in to your Nintendo account with this Google Authenticator bollocks, none of the codes are working. Why does Nintendo have to make it so difficult I recall having a similar issue about a year ago - from memory I think I was trying to log in to my account from my PC but couldn't remember/reset the password. I had to email support multiple times who said I needed to provide various bits of info back via email - it was a pain in the arse so I gave up. I can still only access my account on my Switch. Please understand. Edit: just saw your follow up. I neglected to screenshot any back up codes

Had a very quick pre-work peek and was reminded of how backwards Nintendo are for online when looking at the online me multiplayer description of only working with 'friends'. I really wish they would allow you to choose random people even if they turned off the pointless voice chat functionality, that I would never dream of using anyway, for strangers and keep it for aforementioned 'friends'.

I know what you mean. I guess maybe its the fear of randomly dropping out of a session that no other stranger would want to continue?
We should get another friends code thread going here. I'm sure we could easily put together a Mario Kart 64 session one evening.
