3D World felt like a proper Super Mario Bros game in 3D. The levels are pretty short and it's mainly about getting to the flagpole rather than collectables. Really enjoyed it. Still got some bits to go back and do and haven't done Bowser's Fury frankly because I couldn't find it

I'm really enjoying Super Mario Odyssey at the moment, haven't played it before. I love seeing the worlds change as you clean up the problems and more things opening up as a result. It has far less frustrating bits than 64 (which I love) and Sunshine (great potential, but I gave up on) , and when you get tired of trying to get all the moons in a world just go somewhere else. They're just little worlds that you can explore every nook of.

Odyssey doesn’t really start until you’ve completed it. It’s a great game all the way through.

I gave up on Odyssey about halfway through. Again it felt like there was too much going on, and too many collectibles. It is good though, and I’ll give it another go later.
Yeah, liking the simplicity of 3d World. Just got to get to flag in a time limit. Nice.
It’s has loads of little party like games too, which is fun.
Such a great game to go to after smashing Quake, which I’ve been addicted to over the last few days.

I bought Gleylancer over the weekend which is an old Japanese shooter for the Megadrive that is worth a lot to collectors apparently, but I had never heard of it. Anyway, it is very enjoyable, reminiscent of Thunderforce and for the (currently on offer) price of £4.79, well worth picking up - they have put a fair amount of effort into the emulation as well, patching in modern control options, English language and a whole raft of CRT type shader settings.

Talking of emulating games, I would love if Rare did a retro pack of the old Ultimate games that I could play on the Switch in handheld mode.

I have been tempted by this. May grab it while it has its introductory price...

I loved 3D Land but binned 3D World on the Wii U, it’s probably much better on handheld though

Yeah was gonna ask the same. I also did the same, but I did check out the starting level and didn't really find much had chenged? I know there's a moon level or something at a certain number of collectables?

It's definitely a more snappy Mario than the usual 3D console Mario games which are more collectable focused

For me, 3D World is literally Mario 3, but in 3D. The level design philosophy is directly lifted from that game. They're like father and son.
I loved 3D Land too, but that felt closer to Mario Galaxy in places. It was also lighter on ideas and perhaps paced to be a little more chill.

The main game (which is pretty short and easy, only about 5 hours to see the end credits) feels like a prologue to what comes afterwards, when you can explore the worlds fully and have a lot more moons and challenges, plus some bonus unlockable worlds. I put around 70 hours in total to get 999 moons (which I probably wouldn't recommend tbh), which certainly makes it by far the biggest Mario game in terms of content.

I thought 3D Land was basically SMB3 in 3D (hence the raccoon suit) and 3D World just expanded on that further. I get why people prefer 3D Land, as it feels like old-school Mario in many ways with some modern flourishes. But SM3DW just goes crazy with the amount of variety and creativity in its levels, and definitely feels like a proper flagship Mario game by the end.

I prefer 3D Land and would like a Switch version.
However, I gave up on 3D World on the WiiU but got it again for the Switch and loved it. I haven't played Land since it came out, so my opinion is very stale.

3D Land was pretty perfect as a handheld game tbh. I think 3D World just suffered a bit simply because it wasn't Mario Galaxy 3, hence the initial lukewarm response, but the actual game was still fantastic on its own terms (if perhaps not quite as good as the Galaxy games).

But SM3DW just goes crazy with the amount of variety and creativity in its levels, and definitely feels like a proper flagship Mario game by the end. Although the Racoon power up is a direct reference, I feel 3D Land doesn't quite match the Super Mario Bros 3 formula. With 3D World and SMB3, both games pick an idea, enemy type or power up for each level and develop a unique challenge from that, focus on that exclusively, and then discard it completely at the end. No two levels use those same ideas exactly, or even similarly in most cases, and it makes for a pretty varied experience with many different memorable levels. 3D land doesn't really follow that pattern so rigidly. Levels can have noticeable changes of pace with no real focus on any one game detail. They're more a 'get to the end' kind of deal, with no consistent or developing theme or challenge. They're still fun, but there are fewer memorable stages overall. The ones I tend to remember are those that have 'remixed' appearance later on. That's my take on them, anyway. I love them both and 3D Land completely justifies 3D gaming in my opinion, but 3D World just pleases me that little bit more.

Yeah that's a fair point, and another reason why I preferred 3D World overall. The use of stereoscopic 3D was pretty cool, but aside from that the 3D Land stages were quite conservative for the most part. Still a great game, but 3D World added a lot more spice to that package imo.

Can’t remember 3d Land, but I watched some videos and don’t think it looks as varied as 3d World, which is like tons of mini games inside Mario levels.
Obviously hasn’t got the story of Mario 64 but it’s a lovely little pick up and play title. I seem to be getting closer to the end, and have only played it on my own, so I hope it doesn’t end there.
I was in one of the haunted mansion levels earlier. It put a big smile on my face - I love those crazy levels. Maybe Luigi’s Mansion is the next game for me…

I stupidly bought Metroid Dread digitally for £50 on pre-order. I now see if I waited, I could've got it for £42 using the 2 switch game voucher thing on the Nintendo Online section. Oh well, at least I can pickup BotW and another exclusive for the same price that'll save me £18 alone for BotW!

They realised that it looked exactly like a mobile game and so are completely redoing the art.

It'd be nice if they could add the two DS games in as well, considering it's a full-price release. Obviously they won't though.

How the fuck do you log in to your Nintendo account with this Google Authenticator bollocks, none of the codes are working. Why does Nintendo have to make it so difficult
