Can anyone give me a super basic overview of Monster Hunter Rise vs Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin? The boy (10) has never played a Monster Hunter game but suddenly wants one for his birthday. I'm not sure he knows exactly what they are, but he picked Stories 2 from looking at the amazon pages. I've never played any Monster Hunter games, but it looks like Stories 2 is a turn based JRPG, whereas the others are more like open-world action games, right? He likes Pokemon Shield/Scarlet and Tears of the Kingdom, if that helps. I'm a bit late here, but the differences are as described. Monster Hunter Rise (and World, and the upcoming Wilds) are "fight monsters, get parts from random drops (some very common, some rarer), upgrade your weapon and armour and fight bigger monsters" games. When reduced to that level it does sound repetitive, but there are 14 different weapon types to learn if you so desire, many different monsters plus other side quests. I absolutely love it - the thrill of beating a new monster is awesome. Hunts are 50 min max, but to be honest if it takes you longer that 20 min you need to look to upgrade your gear. Most hunts, when you know what you're doing, are done in 5-10 min. Playing co-op can be helpful as the monster has more opponents to focus on, this is why your palico (cat) and palamute (dog) will come and fight with you in single player, plus you take NPCs out with you too. Co-op can also show you skills, techniques, environmental traps that you weren't aware. And be a chance to play with your EG/Font Geek buddies. Monster Hunter Stories is a JRPG where you seek monster eggs, hatch them and train them up by fighting other monsters in turn based combat. It features the classic rock-paper-scissors style attack triangle. I quite enjoyed it, but got a bit bored after a while. It's kinda cutsie, but slow. And, the badass monsters you fight in Rise, World etc are now your friends. They are two VERY different games. I've never played Pokemon, but from what I know of it he would probably prefer Stories.

I'm having a major 1st world dilemma. Mate at work offered me 180 for my switch oled. I'm thinking of cashing in now and then getting the new one later on. Not playing it as much but then I saw the trailer for the new Zelda game haha.
I hate being poor lol

My worries from the trailers seems to be the case. A lot of the reviews are saying you basically end up using 5 of the echoes to solve everything. Hmmm.

The vast majority of the reviews seem to be quite positive tbh (beyond mentioning a few technical hiccups), even if they mention using a small subset of the abilities at the expense of others they still praise the variety.
Let's be honest, did we really consistently use absolutely everything in BotW and especially TotK (unless it was necessary for a puzzle)? This just seems like it's got more of that kind of variety stuffed in a Link to the Past-esque package, and that sounds pretty good to me!

Critically, that’s still on par with the Horizon games on PlayStation.

Do puzzles all only have one method of solving them? Otherwise you still have the option of finding unusual and fun solutions for the sake of it

The reviews saying that combat is a bit frustrating/annoying are a worry.
It’s been ages since a Zelda game has let me swing a sword without worrying if it’s going to break or I’ll run out of time in “sword fighter mode”.
Hoping it’s a relatively combat light game but some reviews saying it’s about on par with a regular 2D Zelda in terms of frequency.

What is there to worry about, when you can spam a bunch of meat in front of enemies?

My boy, who has been introduced to gaming solely through Zelda, is almost literally bouncing off the walls with excitement today.
One last day of school to get through then he can go and get EoW later today. Made up for him.
This will be his 5th Zelda on the switch!

Crazy to think, but nearly all the Zelda games are available on Switch. It’s just the DS and CDi ones missing now, right?

Oh yeah. Haha.
I forgot about those. Blurred my Wii U and Switch collection for second there.

I wish they had Twilight Princess on Switch. I have the Wii version, but the Wii is region-locked so it's all in japanese. I love the fact that you can do Switch games in any language.
The new Zelda game is getting some very good reviews, and some average ones. I'm hoping it's good, but I have to say nothing in the trailers or the description of the new mechanics looks or sounds very interesting.
Maybe I should get the Link one instead.

Don’t you live in Japan? Maybe you should learn the language? I’ve found games a great way to learn…

I still haven't gotten around to playing Link's Awakening, so really need to hold fire on buying the new one.
@bill - the Wii has plenty of scope for soft modding to get around that kind of restriction (although you'd still need an English copy of the game), but yeah I'd love a Switch version instead.

Twilight Princess and Wind Waker! Plus A Link Between Worlds. Kinda surprised that one is still stuck on the 3DS.

dfunked I think my wii is successfully soft-modded to be multi-region. But I don't have any UK Wii discs to test it with, and I'm reluctant to spend the 30 odd quid it'd cost to buy and ship a UK copy of Twilight Princess that might possibly not work. Don’t you live in Japan? Maybe you should learn the language? I’ve found games a great way to learn… Yes. I did buy the Wii version as an attempt to learn Japanese (which I suck at), but I've generally found games to be a *terrible* way to learn Japanese. At least, non-voiced games like most nintendo ones are/were. Because I want to *play Twilight Princess*, and instead it takes me 10 hours to get through all the dialogue at the beginning and try and work out what's going on and what I'm supposed to do. So I get bored and start clicking through the dialogue without reading it, and then have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. If the game was fully voiced with subtitles, that might be another matter as my listening is a lot better than my kanji and I might at least have a vague idea what was going on. But clicking through the dozens of lines of junk text in nintendo games while trying not to accidentally click through the occasional one that is important is hard/boring enough in English, let alone in kanji.

Oh that's a shame, I seem to remember that Wind Waker had furigana, which made the kanji manageable.

Phantom Hourglass was pretty good for learning kanji, because you could press the stylus on them and get the readings. All sorts of useful everyday words like "treasure chest" and "spirit power".

I think it did have furigana, but even so, it slowed the pace to a crawl. There is a heck of a lot of dialogue in that game, as a lot of the characters do like to go on and on.
anyway... Switch remaster of Twilight Princess please!

Having watched the Digital Foundry video on Echoes of Wisdom, you have to wonder why, once again, they didn’t lock the game to 30fps. Obviously there’s a new console around the corner that might bump performance, but this doesn’t look like it was developed with that in mind.
It wasn’t a deal breaker for me with Link’s Awakening, but it does seem more severe in this one.

I played Zelda for half an hour yesterday evening (although I really should've gone to bed). The judder is quite apparent in the castle town (a pity, but I can look past it). So far the game is good fun. I have avoided most trailers, previews, etc. so going in fresh. The echoes mechanic is great fun. It makes the game more puzzle-y.

I noticed drops in Link’s Awakening, but wasn't enough to stop me playing. I think in handheld (for me at least) I don't find it as jarring.

I bought the new game after Currys were offering 25% discount but it's just going to sit on the shelf until the new console.
Kinda hedging my bets it'll get a framerate boost then.
