Also donโt leave things โto soakโ longer than a few minutes. I have a friend who bought a decent knife set and after use dropped them in lukewarm soapy water and left them there until he got around to finishing cleaning. Theyโre probably rusted to fuck by now.

Not sure if relevant but I got J. Kenji Lopez-Alt's new book The Wok the other day and it's excellent.

Finally got myself a can crusher for the numerous cat food and beans cans, not to mention the wife's addiction to diet coke, took a bit of mastering but much more subtle than stamping on them outside.

We are told to not crush cans here, at least that rings a bell somehow. Gonna buy a can crusher now.

I'd need about 3 tubs if I didn't crush 'em, probably said that before too.

On the pots and sauce pans topic if you are going to splash the cash on le creuset John Lewis had a 20 - 40% off sale on their stainless steel sets which are awesome. I snagged a saucepan to add to the collection this weekend.
You'll still be dropping a few hundred on a full set though. If I was buying their cast iron/enamel stuff I think you can get the same quality for much less.
If you can get past the branding Ninja Foodi cookware gets constantly great reviews and is well priced. It's non stick though so depends on your preferences with cooking.

My new place has a gas hob so my next purchase will be a cast iron griddle so I can sear the shit out of everything!

I've been looking at the Ninja Blender that's 50 quid off for Easter. My mate raves about the Ninja stuff but it looks a bit shopping channel crap.

Need a honing steel to keep my knives in good working condition (I currently use a dodgy little hand held sharpening thing, about once every month or couple of months, which probably isn't good).
Is it worth having an expensive one or can I just buy one from Wilkos?

I'd recommend spending a bit. Had a cheap one that fell apart mid sharpen, thankfully without slicing my hand off in the process. Asked my missus to grab me one while she was out and got this pathetic looking one with a plastic handle. It still does the job but probably a matter of time before this one falls apart too.

So there's a difference between sharpening and honing. The former is self-explanatory but is for more blunt edges, while a honing rod essentially keeps your knife keen.
They're different tools for different purposes, you can't replace one with t'other. You ideally want to sharpen them every quarter or so depending on usage, and hone them pretty much every time you use them.

Yeah, Ninja is great. Iโve had one of their blenders for several years. And as much as I usually dislike multi-function appliances, their Foodis are about the best consumer pressure cooker/slow cooker/air fryer combos.

Magnetic strip for your knifes is better than a knife block.

Shapton or Naniwa make good wet stones, diamond stones are also a good alternative to traditional stones

I found a whetstone in my dad's shed when clearing it out, so have been trying to get the crappy knives we have into some kind of shape. Man, that's some meditative shit. Awesome. And despite being probably 50 years old, much more effective at putting an edge back than anything else.

Get a leather strop for honing, save you going back to the stone too often. Bane of my life sharpening plades

Wise words mate.
They all need another going over tbh, but a marked improvement.
