First thing to cook in a cast iron skillet after seasoning it? Got it for Christmas and no real ideas beyond steak. Okonomiyaki it's cheap, fun, and some people like the taste. youtu.be/r2Eed0Z2dgM

Ooooh... Might have to try that!
Spanish tortilla mentioned on the last page is a banger. Nice waxy spuds... Nom! Plus you can just finish it under the grill rather than faffing with flipping.
I'd only do egg dishes if you're really confident in the seasoning though. I've had a few fuckups when I thought it was in a good place.

Ok, this made me laugh, and now it keeps popping back into my head and making me chuckle randomly when doing other things. Kitty litter equivalent of a heated toilet seat? I use my instant pot to cook rice quite a bit. I've found it a bit inconsistent though, using the "pot in pot" method I've had to go quite a way beyond the cooking times people recommend online to get good results. In general the IP is probably my favourite kitchen gadget of all time.

I can't get over how that looks like a suspiciously large poo for a cat that size. I really don't care enough to invoke the CSI pan and enhance tricks.

South Park's "shitty wok" comes to mind.

Son #1 has been getting his cooking information from tiktok, and is insisting we get a rice cooker. I'm sending him that pic to shut him up right now.

Rice cookers are amazing, one of our best kitchen buys along with the slow cooker.

Someone in this thread mentioned having a DeBuyer carbon-steel frying pan. I've since bought one and I'm a bit in love with it. That is all.

I've finally got myself a foot operated can crusher, seeing as I'm chief recycler in our household (ie it's left to me) and Mrs Mercury is hooked on cock, sorry Coke and the dickwad kids will eat about 8 things between them beans being a staple, I have multiple cans to crush every day, in the last house I'd be stood outside every day stamping on the blighters but now I have my crusher in kitchen, it's taken a little mastering but generally it works pretty well, next is somehow organising the recycling bin ....
/third world problems eh.

I did the classic βtake shit to the charity shop, come back with different shitβ move and got a steak press a few weeks ago. Would recommend. Has upped my steak game considerably.
Also great for bacon.

Isn't bacon pretty thin anyway?

Itβs for getting it pressed flat against the pan so it cooks evenly, not flattening it down. The fat renders out more evenly, you get a better colour and so on and so forth.

Press it down to get that Maillard reaction going. I'm pretty sure I've got one that I've never actually used.

Better maillard consistency but you risk squeezing more fat out and losing internal flavour.

Pro tip - hold it up on its fatty edge first to get the right rendering and then you can rely on that to brown the rest of the steak evenly.
Also, fat flash it afterwards (cook to desired doneness, rest for 5-10 minutes, fire the pan back up to high heat with the various drippings and juices still in it, then 10 seconds both sides) to get the absolute best crust.

I do bacon in my cast iron wok now and it comes out perfectly. One of the best things I've ever bought.

I was told crushing cans meant they were harder to recycle and so went to waste, depending on your councils system.
I have a rice cooker in the loft that's never been used, not sure I get the point really.

Apparently our local authority have them taken up to Merseyside (we're in Devon) to be recycled there. I wouldn't be able to fit all the recycling in the little bin if I didn't crush them. deez I think the point of a rice cooker is to cook rice with it. Have you ever tried it?

So we have a new kitchen, and now need a good draining rack and some new pots. Any recs? The drainer will need to be good for lots of pots and pans and chopping boards as my partner uses all the ones we own for every meal she makes, and I'm fed up of playing pan jenga.

Mrs Mercury has a habit of using every known pot and utensil available and then washing up after the meal or sometimes a while later, I cannot bear it, I favour the wash and go approach where after the meal all I have to do is the plates. cubby you'll be forever playing pan jenga no matter what drainer you use.
On the pot front I personally prefer a heavy aluminum set with glass lids. Had my set of Meyers for about 15 years, only on one the non-stick coating a bit knackered as Mrs Mercury also commits the cardinal sin of using metal utensils to cook with.

If there's one thing Debenhams was ever useful for it was grabbing a decent pot set in their January sale.

Draining racks really bother me, what are you supposed to do with them when you dry the dishes and put them away? Leave it sat there like a smug wirey bastard next to the sink? No thanks

elstoof how do you stack stuff after you've washed it then? I mean I could get away without one for reasons mentioned just now but where would the fun be in trying to de-jenga the crazy pile of pots, dishes, mugs, cutlery and cooking implements left by Mrs Mercury?

Dishwasher for most things, and then hand dry pots/pans after washing them and put them back in their place.
If you don't have a dishwasher I don't know why you even chose to carry on living. Washing up is the worst.
