Everyone knows Returnal is the true bestest game, but I'm glad we're petty enough that Zena won.

Having played through much more of the game, I now retract my previous statement as well as changing my FGGOTY (hmm that didn't acronymize very well) vote to Kena. Really? I've been haverin' over it for a bit, does it get that good? Or did they get to you? Look, I recognize Returnal might be objectively the better game. But we're talking about my opinion on what the GOTY is to me. Despite owning Returnal a full 2 months before Kena, I haven't even got out of the first biome yet. I'm an old man with old-man reflexes and too many other games clamoring for attention. So Returnal was never going to get my vote, but I did change it from Hades because technically Hades didn't release this year. Kena is not a groundbreaking game by any means. We've seen its combat mechanics and platform puzzle elements before. But they are packaged in such a beautiful, charming, and polished way that it's an absolute joy to play. I also appreciate that the devs want old fogeys like me to also enjoy their game by including an easy mode and stellar ingame guide complete with videos so I don't even need to go to Youtube if I get stuck.

Yeah Returnal can get fucked. As a fellow old man, it's just waaaaaaay too hard. I can see that there are some great mechanics at play but life's way too short.
GOTY was CK3. I know it came out last year, but is also GOTY this year. That's how good it is. It will also be GOTY next year, fyi.

I would like to point out that at 43 years old and rocking a multitude of old man minor ailments, I finished Returnal and I am currently replaying it, because it's that good. WarrenderI wasn't having a go, I just got the impression that you weren't initially that taken with Kena. I was wondering if something happens mid game that elevates it.

Age affects us all in different ways.
(And I've always been shit at games, I've just now got a better excuse).

Yes, more mechanics appeared to add to the challenge with bosses and puzzles. I'm not saying I will never finish Returnal, God willing I live long enough to devote the time to it (I have a few years on you at 57). Just that I really can't say it's my GOTY right now. I'm at the very end of Kena so I can definitely vote for it with confidence.

I’ve purchased Kena due to it being FGGOTY. You fuckers had better not have let me down.
Hopefully it can be the first game I actually finish in what feels like about 3 years.

I really am tempted by Kena myself. I managed to get to Biome 4 on Returnal and I did love it, but fuck me I'm getting too old for challenging games now. How long is Kena?

Yeah that’s what appealed to me. Plus it looks really nice.
And I had a £10 voucher so only cost me £13

EG are busy disappearing up their collective arses and have no time for diamonds in the rough like Kena.

Lol Unpacking
It's a decent enough game but GOTY? Pretentious as fuck.
Sorry if that comes across as mean. I just had a strong reaction.

From what I've heard it's the kind of game where you've seen everything in the first 30 minutes and then you get on with your day. I don't think games have to be AAA monsters to be GOTY but at times EG feels like that kid at sixth form who was trying to reinvent themselves and be different but it never felt natural.

I've put probably an hour into it. It occupied the time. Perhaps I'm missing something that unfolds the more you play.

Also Halo Infinite at 2 is a bit of a stretch, it's good but a campaign with few surprises but excellent combat and an open world which made no difference and a multiplayer which is very good but shitty progression. I just don't see how it could be no.2, but again if you're trying to be different it alllllll makes sense.

Yay! Wildermyth! That would have gotten my vote if it'd been on the list. And if I'd played it. But it sounds awesome.
PS/ RPS game of the year is Inscryption (remember they're PC only)
Crate & Crowbar couldn't pick one, but:
The Ascent, Life is Strange: True Colors, Valheim probably Valheim.
(They were PC only until very recently)

I just started Residential Evil Village, normally not my thing but it was cheap, and kind of surprised it didn’t end up higher. Only 4 hours in but it’s quite a showcase for HDR. My vote was for Halo though, last one I played was 3, and just was amazed at how good the basic shooting still is.

I didn't think it was that great either, but maybe its an experience they can related to more than their audience, who obviously greater in number and have more diverse work/life backgrounds. I dunno.

I don't mind then picking a weird game as GotY, the readers choices aren't much better as It Takes Two is somehow in the top 5. The only interesting thing about the game is the fact it has to be played co op, the actual game play is average at best and the story is appalling.
I think it's a sign that 2021 hasn't been a particularly good year for games. The AAA games have either been very safe (Halo, Forza Horizon 5 etc) or a bit shit (BF 2042).

In this particular context the game of the year list is there to signal to other people in the same circles.
I've never even heard of Unpacking, such lists increasingly don't really reflect what actual gamers were playing or want to play, they guide us 'for the greater good' toward wretched choices like Gone Home.

To be fair (and it's the same with album of the year lists), I'd rather see something different in there.
It's just that in this case, I don't think it's a good choice
FWIW I am enjoying Halo infinite more than any game I've played in a while, it's my number 1.

But Gone Home was great?! I do think this has been a year without any real standout games, at least on PC which is what I'm mainly familiar with. There have been some safe familiar very good games, like Hitman 3 or Forza, but they haven't been dramatically different from previous versions. And there have been a lot of reasonably good games or weird little games. But I can't really think of any games that have stood out head and shoulders above the rest. TBF, I'd heard of Unpacking, but never heard of Returnal until this thread.
I also view these lists as a chance to find out about interesting-sounding new titles, rather than just to confirm that 'big game #3' was the best game.
The RPS list used to be really good for that, but with the staff changes over the past 2 years it doesn't throw up as many interesting sounding games as it used to.

Gone Home certainly got rave reviews from 'games journalists', it was still trash though, it's not even possible to fail which arguably disqualified it as a game to start with.
It was the gaming equivalent of Oscar bait.

Just finished it yesterday and it took me 13 hours but I also did some side quests and exploration along the way which were in no way needed but were fun to do.
