Aside from the movement rules that sounds like quite a few things. 7th Continent, Tiny Epic Quest, the Forbidden game series. Any other memories? Euro? Dungeon crawler? Co-op? Not any of those, sorry (and not Root or anything like that). There was no ‘board’ just a deck of cards arranged in a grid. The cards were rectangular, not square. It’ll come to me, I’ll let you know what it was when I remember. It was one vs many - some kind of Spirit Island-esque creature hunting adventurers? Or they were hunting the creature?

I agree that it sounds like Gloom of Kilforth. Or The City of Kings?

Has anyone played bolt action? (I Wasn't sure to put this in the warhammer thread). Bought the starter set for the ww2 obsessed boy. First time doing mini based games. Blimey the assembly is confusing . I've made a start but still have another 30 odd little men to build. then paint, then we can play. le sigh

Not Bolt Action, but I have Black Seas and Black Powder from the same company, both excellent and easy to learn, but yeah, assembly is a nightmare. They expect you to hand-string the sails of the ships in Black Seas. Optional, but the models feel naked without it.

Once we actually get to play i'm sure it'll be fun, but i foresee long evenings sticking my fingers together (and making models. badum-tish)

Recently picked up the Lord of The Rings: The Card Game. Love board and card games, but rarely get to play with others. Even less so in the past year and half, with my go to board gaming pal pretty much completely isolating himself and still only wanting to meet outside. So, I decided to take the plunge with something I could play solo. I do have a Arkham, which is supposed to be good solo too, but I don't particularly find the core set enjoyable to replay and I have an unplayed full campaign that I want to save for when my buddy is comfortable to play again. It is actually surprisingly nice to play something solo. By the end of the first weekend with it, I had played almost a dozen games, which would normally take me most of year to do with someone else. I can also pace myself nicely, deciding as and when I want to buy more. This hasn't been needed yet though, as I've not even played the final campaign yet and I have some user made campaigns that were highly recommended. Only trouble with just having the base set (X2) is that the card pool is quite small and likely making the game harder. And it is balls hard! I hear it is known as being hard, but solo it is exceptionally hard, with some games feeling lost within the first turn or two. It can be quite luck based and I expect some of that is linked to the smaller cars pool. I've finally decided to cave and take out the gold ringed encounter cards, so will see how that goes. They do seem to be the ones that screw me the most. Are you playing with one hand? I played this for years solo but always played with two hands as it made the game easier and a lot more fun with more strategies opening up.

I felt two handed might get a bit confusing and likely to mess up the rules somewhere along the line. May have to take that route though as it just seems to hard to play one handed and can get frustrating when you are so reliant on a good run from the encounter deck. The second campaign in the base set is proving still too much. That Hill Troll right out of the gate is a nightmare. If I can scrape through (normally through luck of getting a Gandolf or 2), I normally have so much threat built up that I have no chance of managing the staging area in quest 2b. Going for something with a bit more quest power to help manage this screws me for the first part. I could possibly try a different mix of heros that lowers my starting threat (current deck is 29), but just going two handed will likely be a better idea.

Two handed is definitely the way to go. LotR is absolutely rock hard and you've pretty much got to craft your deck per encounter to have any rational chance of winning (short of game breaking decks like using Caldara, although she got nerfed in an errata). Especially if you only have the core box you've got such a limited pool of cards that you can't really do much dual or tri sphere to make a more rounded deck for true solo.

Try two handed, it brings ranged and other useful things into play. Also don’t worry about the 3rd quest in the core box. It is notorious for being one of the hardest in the whole series. It can be won but it’s unlikely with core cards, try it a few times and move on, enjoy the game and go back to the 3rd questwhen you have more deck/hero options.

Initially was thinking that was poor timing for me just getting started now, but actually doesn't make a massive difference. Miss out out on the revised core though, which likely will be a better place to start. Probably isn't worth getting it now, as I expect I would just get mostly the same cards I already have. Might have been worth it if I only had the 1 core, but with 2 there would be too many dupes. The re-release of expansions might be handy. The old style seems reasonably available, but that could change quite quickly and i imagine that varies depending on the cycle. Releasing just 2 box's for each cycle instead of the deluxe + 6 packs is more convenient, although pricing looks like it works out basically the same. I'll probably go ahead and pick up the Mirkwood cycle quite soon. I expect that will tide me over for quite some time and I'll be ready for a new cycle when these revised ones come out.

Found quite a good bargain today. Still shrink wrapped full copies of Pathfinder ACG, Wrath of the Righteous and Skulls and Shackles, all expansions and character decks included. I have the 2nd edition version of PACG and Curse of the Crimson Throne, but everyone sings the praises of the older versions. Only $100 for both.

My neeeeeeeeeerrrrd points got a substantial boost today as I accepted delivery of my long sought after copy of Federation Commander. A Star Trek themed hex and counter wargame with aesthetics directly from the age of TOS.
Oh yeah.

On the subject of trying to remember old board games.... I used to have one back in the early 90s, the only thing I can remember was at the end of the game you had to put a little plastic sword in to something (some kind of crypt or something) to release a little red gem / diamond. That's all I've got for ya.... sure I asked this on EG years ago with no luck. Anyone?

A double-sided player aid / CRT of baffling information and a dot matrix printed rule book.

Dunno if you’ve ever played Talon from GMT (which you should as it’s excellent), but this seems to be a far denser, less flashy, version of that but Star Trek. Even down to having dry erase ship cards to track info.

Just got my Arkham Horror characters big box, and the last 2 innsmouth expansions I needed. Apart from the Return to expansions I now have a complete set. I am not willing to even look at the cost of building this over the last 2 years, but fuck me it has been fun.
Just finished reorganising the binders to fit all cards in. (Rather than sleeving I like having big binders where I can view cards.) Took me a couple of hours but rather therapeutic. Can't wait to start my Innsmouth run tomorrow. Just trying to decide which 2 characters to use.
On the down side it turns out I am not really a fan of the big box collection. Trying to get my head around 250 new cards for the edge expansion is just pointless. Getting 5 new cards for a role is fun, I can imagine how interactions will work, how cards can be played and who would suit them. With so many it is pointless, I will just rely on premade decks from the net.
I think separate investigator packs and big box campaigns would probably be the best compromise.

Score!
I can't remember if I had it or my friend did, but my rose tinted glasses remember it being cool. I love all those novelty board games from the 80s and 90s.
Secretly really looking forward to the remake of Thunder Road later this year.
