My preference is normally to play to win, but I don't really give a shit whether I do or not. My normal gaming buddy is far better at games then I am, so I wouldn't play any if I really felt the need to win. Then again, the fact he is good at games means he isn't going to get upset if I do something (within the rules) that is going to give me a big advantage. He might get annoyed at the game, but not me. Same goes if he did something like that against me and we would both respect the thought process that worked out how to break a system or whatever it might be.
Having said that, if I was playing with a group where that kind of thing might not go down so well I would have the courtesy to rail that sort of thing in or choose my targets to avoid making it a miserable experience for someone (for example, I would go after someone else who is being aggressive and leave the person who is a little more passive, even if it didn't make as much sense). I certainly wouldn't knowingly break rules and would take something back if it turned out to be against the rules and was possible to do so. Even if I enjoy playing to win, I would find it very unenjoyable to be the person ruining the game for someone else.

MyIsland wrapped up. Despite some interesting diversions in later chapters this definitely outstayed its welcome. We probably dragged it out too long. If you loved MyCity then you know what to expect. Mechanically fun, but shallow AF. Moved on to Ticket to Ride Legacy, and this is much more like it. Two of the twelve games in and it’s already a delight. Can’t wait to crack on and see what’s in those boxes. Got Dune Imperium Uprising on backorder. Depending who you believe there’s another shipment in June or November.

Finally got my hands on Heat: Pedal to the Metal. Man, this game is exactly what I look for in a board game even if the theme isn't something I'm normally interested in. Minimal rules overhead but not lacking in depth. The optional Legends make it super easy to add bot racers to round out the field even making solo a full experience. Highly recommended.
Dune Imperium Uprising is due to arrive tomorrow. We'll see if I prefer this to Lost Ruins of Arnak.

off to the UK Games Expo tomorrow. No idea if there's anything in particular to look for, but should hopefully be good.

UKGE was pretty cool, played a new Knizia, Rebirth, which hasn't been released yet but seemed fun enough to get me to Kickstart it (it's already funded so whilst I know they're never guaranteed it feels like a very safe KSer.
Also bought the boardgame of Dorf Romantik though not sure it'll ever actually get played as my group aren't massive on co-ops. Hopefully it'll get played at some point.

The good thing about co-ops is that you can always play them solo if a group can't be found.
Dune Imperium Uprising felt nothing like Lost Ruins. Dunno why people are always comparing the two. People are strange.

Never been to the UKGE, but planned to go in 2020 with a friend. Actually bought him the ticket as a Christmas present. Then the pandemic happened and it all got cancelled. Maybe I'll try again next year.

I got the original KS of that. It’s fun enough, but nothing I’d write home about. Nostalgia factor really ties it together.
It also has a token designed after the Four Non Blondes He Man video, which made me actually laugh out loud when I punched it.

RPGs ok for this thread?
Anyone got any experience with any of the following? - Starfinder (beginners box) - D&D (Starter set or Essentials Set) - New Star Wars RPG (there are 3 starter sets) - Kids on Brooms
My kids have enjoyed doing Hero Kids on and off for the past few years, but it's getting a bit basic for them now. Unfortunately I'm kinda limited in what's available here, especially for a reasonable price.
All the above seem tempting. I think I've ordered them from most figures/combat/stats to least figures/combat/stats. Though tbh I think my kids enjoy both sides.. the combat and characters/equipment, and also the more narrative stuff.
From my side I just want something easy to set up and run, with lots of material available.

Got the lads round on Friday to play some more Detective: City of Angels and following that a Heat: Pedal to the Metal championship - can't wait.
I've ordered a 20 quid custom trophy for the Heat winner to add a bit of fun - don't think I've ever seen my fiancee roll her eyes so much when I unwrapped it yesterday.

They loved it! I bought the starter set and essentials kit - and found a link where I could download and print standees of the various NPCs. I got them a miniature each. Honestly it was great fun and they’re already asking when we can play next. I’m going to run the Essentials Kit adventure as it could link up nicely with some small changes.

Oh I also made them some cards of all the different actions they could do in combat which made it much easier for them to remember their powers etc.

After months of patiently waiting, my Geeknson table finally turned up today.
It’s so pretty.
Not sure I’ll get tired of stroking the velvet (matron) either.

Is that the new starter set (Dragons of Stormwreck Isle). Lots of reviews said it was ok, but the older one was better ( The Lost Mine of Phandelver ), though I feel like someone said you can download that adventure. Maybe.

What I actually went with, though we've only done one short session, and that was mainly making characters, was a free fan-made Hogwarts RPG. dbb-8.itch.io/hogwarts-rpgEntire rulebook is only about 16 pages, and it's much more about collaboratively making up a story. To the point where there aren't any adventures, and I was basically making the entire thing up as I went along. (with their help).
I thought I'd give this a go because it was free, so if they hated it it was no big loss, and because while I'm sure the lad (9) would be into any game with crunchy numbers and combat, I suspected the lass (13) wouldn't be that into the numbers stuff, but she's nuts about Harry Potter.
I don't think this kind of unplanned stuff would work in a more generic setting, at least not without experienced players and GM. But it seems like the Hogwarts setting is pretty good for it because everyone is so familiar with what's supposed to happen.
Start them meeting in a train carriage on the Hogwarts express. Then some weird thing happens. They already know they should be investigating it, but avoiding getting in trouble with the teachers, and they already know half the spells and magic items and creatures.
I'm still tempted to get something more systems based, like maybe the D&D sets. But I think I'll see how this goes over the summer holiday first.

Don't be such a milk-dribbling fuck-smear. /edit: it belatedly occurs to me that most people probably won't recognise that as one of the best insults delivered in the show, and instead think I'm randomly abusing LB.

Don't really know much about TTRPGs (don't have a group to play with, tried a couple of solo ones but it really feels like an experience that would be better shared), but I think there are a lot of options for narrative over numbers games. From what I know of D&D, it is pretty hard to avoid getting into crunchy numbers stuff. Had a quick Google and found this list from Dicebreaker: www.dicebreaker.com/categories/roleplaying-game/best-games/10-best-rules-light-and-storytelling-rpgs-for-beginnersMost of those likely wouldn't be appropriate, unless your kids are particularly into Coen Brother thrillers or horror, but Quest on that list sounds ideal for what you would be after. Light on the numbers, but enough to know if that is something that might interest them. Sounds like there are plenty of aids (such as abilities on cards) to get them settled into it and to not spend much time poring through a rules book. Edit - oh and the digital version seems to be free - www.adventure.game/store/digital-edition/

Played Act 1 of Slay the Spire today with my son. Really enjoyed it. Lots of tactics discussion and co-op decisions.
Would defo recommend if you like co-op deck builders. And of course you’ll feel at home if you’re a fan of the video game.
Seen a fair amount of moaning about the cost (@£90), which is expensive, but I think is decent value for what you get in the box. And production quality is really nice.
Looking forward to Act 2.

I’m going to use this opportunity to recommend D&D Beyond if you need help with some of the crunchy stuff. As long as you keep to pretty standard Background options it’ll all be free (digital PHB unlocks a few of the Background options).
I’ve been using it as a supplement to the physical character sheet so I can just double-check my numbers (turns out they were off for AC) and it’s handy for die rolls and/or checking details of skills and so forth.

Anyone tried Unfathomable?
We're looking for something new to play for 4 players in a couple of weeks' time a mate has this (and nobody's played it).
General thoughts? We pretty much play any type of game.

I haven’t played it, but I gather it’s a rework of the old Battlestar Galactica game that was very popular years ago. Think this has been designed to be quicker and work at 4 players, whereas the original could last forever and needed at least 6 or something.
I always thought BSG sounded great, but could never find a copy. Theming isn’t quite as enticing with Unfathomable, but if hidden traitor games are your thing I reckon it’s worth a go.

Finally played Descent last night for the first time (the newer one with app), that was bloody good fun. Four of us played, took 3 and a half hours to do the first quest and take down the boss! Took a while to get started and figured out the flow of using skills etc, but once we did we had a great time.
Planning to continue with the next few quests over the coming months as we've been introduced to be characters and skills.
The terrain and verticality is great, and the minis are very lovely (and very enticing to paint), all in all the group I played with really enjoyed the whole thing.

Yeah, the new Descent is great. A really solid dungeon crawl. The app implantation is fantastic, too. The original price point just ruined its chances a bit I think. I need to grab the expansion at some point.
About 20 years late to the party, but I just grabbed a copy of Dominion when we were out shopping earlier. Taking it old skool.
