Yeah, I've done the rounds. I just value the experience of the folk in here more than randoms or YouTubers. I've nearly bought the game soooo many times, but the new Uprising version has me right close to the edge. It’s literally just popped up on the Xbox (and I assume PS) store. I’ve played the solo version a few times and it seems like a pretty solid solo effort. Cracking game overall. I think Uprising is supposed to have an improved solo bot. Also Steam.

On my YT feed this morning:
‘Why I love The Settlers of Catan (and why the woke hate it)’
Fucking tiresome.

What on earth have you been watching..? Whilst I realise it’s bait, I am morbidly curious about the mental gymnastics required for that title. Are the Woke Mob TM particularly enraged by dice?

It’s the colonialism themes. Some people are put off by it. Which is neither woke nor really a big deal, theme is important to some people.

It’s a buzzword of the moment and gets more clicks, too. But it’s a fucking embarassing hot take at best.

I get ENRAGED by the way Catan espouses extractive land use as the norm. I mean, where are the National Park tiles? Where is wild nature supposed to live autonomously amongst all that fucking brick, sheep and ore? It's all take take take.

You know how I was doing a big cull to save on space and was making good progress?
Well, Aeon’s Trespass Odyssey showed up
And also Oathsworn all in.
And also Solomon Kane all in.
And my Divinity Original Sin all in just shipped
And my Tainted Grail 2.0 too.
I should buy a barn.

The online Dune Imperium implementation is excellent, as is the game itself. Well worth a look - I’ve played nine games in two days so far.

AT:O is so so good. I think it’s edging out KD:M for me, not just as a boss battler but as a game overall. KD:M has this amazing emergency narrative thing, but AT:O overlays a consistent structured narrative and actual world exploration on top of it, and the tweaks to the boss battle parts are so well done - everything escalates and everyone gets more powerful and more dramatic as it goes on, so nothing ends with a foregone conclusion and a cheesed out whimper that can happen in KD:M sometimes.

How much table space does it realistically need? Everything I’ve read suggests you need around 3 dining tables to contain it, which has put me off. However I’ve had a copy waved under nose for a decent price, so if one table would do it I might be tempted.

It doesn’t all need to be on the table at once. The story/explore section needs hardly any space, it’s really just the battle that needs it, and you can fit it into a fairly normal space, especially if you use the app for some of the bookkeeping. With a smaller space it’ll be more than doable but just be annoying to have to setup between battle and story mode, really.

Cheers for that, grem.
In a spot of bad timing I just came across a copy of Isofarian Guard, which I’d been after for ages, so bought that instead.
Maybe next time, Aeon Trespass.

Ooo, you’ll have to tell me how that is. I’ve had a couple of opportunities for that but turned them down.

Nothing as elaborate as those two but we're having a big session next weekend, playing Great Wall (which I've never played) and a couple of cases of Detective: City of Angels (which I adore).
One of the lads is pushing us to play Ankh but I only played it once and really didn't like it. I think I just hate area-control games (wasn't a big fan of Rising Sun either).

Nice.
Only played it once, but I found The Great Wall surprisingly excellent. The competitive but also slightly co-op mechanisms work really well. Looks reet fancy too.

I’m trying out Dune War for Arrakis at a friend’s this weekend. Looking forward to it. I adore War of the Ring and also like me some spice.

I missed out on the first play because I was hungover and bailed - the other three lads who played it all raved about it so I'm quite looking forward to it, especially as I love Nemesis and ISS Vanguard too.

Damn I love Detective: City of Angels.
Played through a case with my fiancee and we managed to solve it on our last guess, then played as the Chisel with a group of mates for the same case and again, one of them solved it on the very final day.
Much better playing the Chisel as a "GM" who tries to keep the game exciting for other people imo - if you play to win it's quite hard for the detectives to solve the cases, especially the 'Hard Boiled' ones.
Time to hoover up the expansions!

Detective was awesome as usual and Great Wall turned out to be pretty good!
Starting to have a problem with one of our group though. He's a great mate and I've known him a long time (I was his best man) but sometimes he's an absolute twat when it comes to playing boardgames, to the point of ruining the atmopshere and everyone's fun if it'd give him a extra 5% chance of winning.
For most of us it's just an excuse to get the lads together, have a drink and a laugh and play some cool games and mechanics - winning is just a little bonus.
Apart from giving him a warning like you would a spoilt child at the start of the next game I'm not sure what the best tack is. Can't drop him from the group. You guys dealt with this before?

I'll try and give a couple of specific examples:
Great Wall - he did various actions that benefitted him greatly that we only realised half way through were illegal (using multiple cards in a turn, placing multiple units in a turn etc). We also found some actions we weren't doing (like upkeep) really hampered the rest of the players. He was miles in front. We tried to revert to the correct rules but he was adamant we should keep playing 'as is' as it would confuse things.
Detective - There's a rule that if it's a tie the person who went last wins. There's a lot of talk online (including from the designers) that this isn't really fair and they suggest another method for deciding ties. I explained we'd be doing this at the start of the game instead of the 'correct' rules. Near the end of the game when I reiterated this he said he didn't hear that, we shouldn't be diverting from the 'official' rules and it's my responsibility to make sure everyone understands that. Funnily enough everyone else on the table heard it (including his own team mate).
Now I've typed all that out he sounds like a right prick but he's not most of the time, only when it comes to 'competing' (board games, video games etc). Brings out the worst in him but I'd still rather have him at the table. Maybe I need to stick to co-op or something a bit more chilled.
Does anyone actually give a shit about winning when it comes to board games? None of my group does bar him.

I think I win about 1 /50 games I play. If I was as precious as that guy about it I’d have torched my entire collection by now.

Same.
Even playing as The Chisel in Detective I was more bothered about trying to give the four detectives a good game rather than winning it.

I definitely play to win, I'm not in it for just going through the motions, but in all the examples given above I'd have gone with what rhaegyr was saying. I have a better win rate than Starchild at maybe a third of the time, but win or lose I mostly tend to enjoy myself. It is the play that matters more than the win. But I'm 100% going for the win.

Don't get me wrong, we all want to win but everyone having a good time is usually the top priority whereas this guy would take a win if it meant everyone else had a miserable time and the atmopshere was in the shitter.
