Possibly unpopular opinion: a lot of time the "this has aged badly" comment can often actually mean "this emulation is poor" or "this port has way too much input lag" or "my 240p retro console that I have plugged directly into an LCD looks terrible". But people just don't have the knowledge, and outside of hobbyists who can blame them.
Perhaps not us enlightened folk, but Joe Public is currently be basing his opinion of the PS1 on the PlayStation Classic, and his opinion of the N64 on the Switch online stuff.
I'm currently playing FFVI for example and to this day the best way to play it by far is the original copy on a SNES. Everything released since is severely compromised in some way.
Even amongst people using original hardware, the number of them upscaling it properly (and in this part of the world, seeking out 60hz) must be vanishingly small.
I can easily imagine this stuff tarnishing people's memories. It seems that (PC) emulation is the convenient answer but again you've got no chance talking Joe Random into that, and see above regarding off-the-shelf emulation.

Dark Souls and its ilk are all fucking shite and any developer who thinks "souls-like" is a positive descriptor for their giant steaming turd of a game is a massive cunt.

The whole Zelda franchise is overrated and all follow the same boring formula.
Formula E is more interesting to watch than Formula 1.
Wetherspoons have a breadth of offering and ease of service all pubs should aspire to.

All old games are crap is a bit of a generalisation. Old is relative as well; when is a game considered old? Dark Souls is pretty old now. 2D games hold up very well compared to 3D stuff which ages quite quickly. 2D Mario games all still play and look great. Mega Man is solid. The Quake rerelease was popular. Everyone loves Doom
The original Tomb Raider was balls to play even when it came out

I'm sure there's a big element of nostalgia with Ocarina. A lot of it is the soundtrack. I'd recommend the 3DS remake over the N64 version if you didn't play the original

People are pretty great. People who hate everyone and everything and complain about their faith in humanity are part of the problem. Some random thing in the news shouldn't be where you look for your faith in humanity to be restored, nor the shit things shit people do to destroy it; people are doing wonderful, kind and incredible things all the time. Be the best person you can be and find your faith in yourself

I also hold this opinion. And yet, I still try to show my kids old games - so they appreciate how far they've come. It's hard to resist, especially when, say, Tomb Raider comes to Fortnite and they say "who's Lara Croft?" I do think, if you were to give a kid the original Tomb Raider nowadays, they would find it largely unplayable. And they wouldnβt be wrong. And yet if you gave them Super Mario World I reckon theyβd say it largely holds up. If you gave them Super Mario 64, which came out at the same time as the original Tomb Raider, it still holds up. This is an unfair comparison though, because Mario games are largely exempt from the "old games are bad" rule, and Tomb Raider was always clunky and awkward to play even at the time, and reviews reflected that. What people liked about the original Tomb Raider games were the globe trotting, ruin exploring Indiana Jones theme, and frankly, Lara. |
