Old games are bad. This is so unpopular that I have to clarify so as to avoid inciting violence: old games were good, and if you enjoy playing old games then you do you, but old games now - they're bad. Stop recommending them to people new to a genre or gaming in general - new games are better. I also hold this opinion. And yet, I still try to show my kids old games - so they appreciate how far they've come. It's hard to resist, especially when, say, Tomb Raider comes to Fortnite and they say "who's Lara Croft?"

Heat is overrated and the shoot out was dull.
I also didn't like Top Gun.

Here's mine - it's a fight to the death between the LotR films and the Diablo games for most boring thing ever created by man.

I do think, if you were to give a kid the original Tomb Raider nowadays, they would find it largely unplayable. And they wouldn’t be wrong. And yet if you gave them Super Mario World I reckon they’d say it largely holds up.

I feel like a genius for skipping GoT. It was all anybody would talk to me about at one point and it was in my guilty "haven't seen it yet" pile. Now everybody is all "it was OK, a bit overrated" like they don't have a GoT tattoo and a first born named Daenerys

The classic Nintendo stuff like SMW do still play great as the controls were so tight and design so good but tbh with all the old stuff I play for 10 minutes then realise I'd rather play something modern.

There's not much point following big football clubs anymore. National football has overtaken it in terms of interest.

I think things from the SNES era onwards have the potential to hold up today. There's a few games from the NES days that could (the Marios, Zeldas, maybe Kirby, couple of Rare games), but most are pretty rough times. I wouldn't want to play them now.

I'ms starting to think (hope) metal bands are the most tongue in cheek expression of culture ever.

If it's genuinely tongue in cheek then I take it back and applaud them all. They seem very serious about it all though

I fucking love old games ngl. I haven't really used my PS5 since I got done with Demon's Souls.
I don't think it's unpopular to dislike old games at all, I'm pretty sure people like me are the outlier. But other than wonky early 3D controls, I don't personally think the age of a game is a good indicator of the amount of fun you can get out of it. I think, broadly, a successful system has the same proportion of good games to crap games as any modern system. Not all of the 1,300 PS4 games for example are worth a minute of your time - there's a reason we all discuss the same 50 or so games.
The main thing that occurs to me is the artificial difficulty of say the NES era where a lot of developers tried to discourage rentals or some shit. I've made it a rule that I don't beat myself up for looking up a solution or using a walkthrough and that is a response to the modern way of never letting the player get stuck, which I like.

Writing paragraphs to criticise some franchise I liked for years because the new film/episode/game doesn't fill me with the same joy it did as a child, maybe because I'm not a child anymore ie Star Wars, etc...

Kind of. It’s more that I reckon that after a strong start the film is a big pile of shit. The decapitation is the literal cut off point.

I love old games too, but there's definitely a "nah, this is a bit shit" cut off point. NES Metroid for example. Fuck that game, it's just not enjoyable despite me loving the series. Maybe if I was a few years older I'd think differently.

Some old games age terribly. But some old games are still objectively better than some new games.
Many new games I've tried have pretty tedious gameplay cycles and utterly extraneous busy work to pad out the playtime. Thinking of those open world games with hundreds of icons.
3D games generally age worse. But 2D platform games effectively hit a plateau in the 16 bit era, and there are plenty as good as modern 2D platform games.
