The Londo stuff in season five is very good, the telepath stuff less so.

I really didn't like it when Boxleitner showed up acting like owned the place. Took me a while to warm to him (loved him by the end) Yes, he's almost portrayed as a baddie when he first appears, it's not until Hague arrives it becomes clear he's actually ahead of the game regards Clark, and why he was sent to B5. But, as you say, turns out to be so far beyond cool he'd need a White Star to get back to it Garibaldi was the opposite, loved him at the start and that he was the only one to still give Londo the time of day. But by the end, I just didn't like him. He separates himself from the rest of the cast and just seems really jaded and bitter
I feel like another full series watching is in order. It's great to see all these characters in the before times

I liked series 5 (but I was already really invested in the show by that point). Rewatching, it's really painful to watch how unappreciated Lyta is. There's so many moments you wish people would have just given her due recognition She's a psy. If I had a friend that could read my mind, every unguarded thought, might put me on the back foot a bit. And after her Vorlon holiday, an extremely powerful one at that But yes, superb character, selfless and unappreciated even as she takes on the worst aliens and humanity can produce. Ivanova would have possibly been one to notice and look out for her, but she got burned by Talya. And Zack tried On O'Hare, and Jeff Conaway, and others, the cast really have suffered since (in a way that ST mainly haven't, weird contrast). The litany of those we have lost is way too long, and many way before their time. Which makes S 5 an even more necessary watch, for the final involvement of so many brilliant people.

An interesting thing I learned is that Boxleinter's in universe and IRL wife was Laura Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie

I know, I was replying to your other post Laura Ingalls was the 2nd actress to play his wife, the first (on the message left for him before the expedition) was Beth Toussaint, whose name I had to google but she was Tashas sister in STNG. Just to add a further dimension to that factoid.

I really wanted to read them after the series for more B5 (the films are mostly a bit rubbish) but remember them being really hard to find

Wasn't there also another series that was a spin off from B5, or am I just thinking of one of the films? I don't think it was good either way

Not read any of the books. The series was Crusade. Much better than the reputation it has. Canned after 1 series. And a couple of films and then last dribblings, the Legend of the Rangers (v poor, except as a last outing for G'Kar) and The Lost Tales (less poor but not much iirc).

The Expanse is really good I watched the first season a while back, but it didn't really strike me as having a similar vibe. I think because it was 80% focused on the crew of the small ship, who tbh I didn't really care that much about, and then 20% on the detective with the mystery of the disappearing girl and a little on the earth/mars politics. I imagine the balance will have shifted in later seasons, but the bit I liked the most (the detective on the space station) seemed like it'd be the bit that'd disappear. I probably should try later seasons at some point.

The Expanse is more like Battlestar Galactica if anything. B5 did have a lot of drama, but no matter how bad things got there was always the hope that things would eventually turn out well.
BSG was a little too interested in using pretty much any opportunity to create melodrama and they obviously never had a clue where the storyline was going. Both BSG and The Expanse are rather grimdark and while they are both shows that I could binge-watch surprisingly easily, neither has really been able to earn my sympathy. Perhaps they are just a little to nihilistic without being convincing enough to really sell their depiction of their settings.

Need to watch all this again it’s been 20 years since I saw it but are all the eps and films out on the new HD remasters ? Is anyone streaming those here on the UK ?

www.warnerbros.co.uk/tv/babylon-5-hd-remasterI don't think it's available on a subscription service in the UK, only to buy. I think it's only on HBO Max. but I think that's US only for some annoying reason. (It might also be on Virgin Go, but I have no idea what that is or who it's available to).

How do we feel about Deep Space Nine? We all love it and agree that as a standalone piece of television its probably the best made iteration of Star Trek.

Yeah, DS9 is probably the best Trek from a writing, dramatic tone and overall storyline perspective but TNG will always be my favourite because it was the first Trek I fell in love with. DS9 has far more interesting characters though. TNG really just has two. Data and Picard..maybe Barclay

Oh yeah TNG is everybody’s favourite but its got at least one, maybe two season out of seven which are almost total garbage. DS9 has consistency like no other.
I do wish I had convenient access to a Babylon 5 rewatch. The Orville is putting me in the mood to keep going with another space serial once I’m done. Guess I could settle for finally finishing my Enterprise rewatch.

Yep, I have my complaints about DS9, but in terms of Star Trek it's not much of a competition. That it took itself more seriously wasn't wholly to its advantage, but I still quite liked it. Especially the early seasons which were more focused on the aftermath of the bajoran-cardassian conflict and on Sisko's awkward role as Emissary. Both Sisko and Gul Dukat (him especially) seem a bit like victims of some later writing decisions. The Emissary was more interesting and ambivalent than "The Sisko", the Wormhole beings were more interesting when they still didn't understand "corporeal entities" instead of weirdly turning into the "Prophets" as bajoran religion saw them and Gul Dukat was - again - a better character as long as he still was a conflicted ambivalent Cardassian that wasn't completely sure about cardassian perspectives.
In terms of it being a "B5 rip-off", I'm pretty sure that some weird similarities are due to them using the DS9-script in some way, shape or form. But that still often did turn out well and I never minded somthing being inspired by the B5-script as long as it was used elegantly and intelligently and when it turned into something that felt original.

We had a big argument about B5 vs DS9 copying each other on the RPS forums last month... it's more complex than it first appears, but basically I think B5 was pitched first, DS9 appears to have copied large aspects of that pitch but actually got some of them to air first. Probably doesn't matter anyway. I do wish I had convenient access to a Babylon 5 rewatch. The Orville is putting me in the mood to keep going with another space serial once I’m done. Guess I could settle for finally finishing my Enterprise rewatch. Space: Above and Beyond?

What's the CW?
I imagine it'll be a lot more serious this time with a better budget. Can't imagine it with a different cast

The CW is the teen/young adult aimed TV station that Warner Brothers has, it's where the Arrowverse shows/Riverdale/Charmed and similar shows are first aired.

JMS explains why it's a reboot in a twitter thread, I still have concerns but hope I'm wrong.
