Sorry for your loss, Dam. I think the easiest or most convenient way these days is through a smart phone and app. I can't recommend anything as I've not done it but I read this recently - www.wired.com/story/best-photo-scanning-apps/

Likewise, sorry to hear your news.
If you don't mind doing it tediously, some desktop scanners have slide scanning functions. I don't know if it's still available but the Canon CanoScan 9000F had something like that. I'm sure others might too. I imagine it'll be pretty time consuming though, assuming you have quite a lot to scan.
Maybe there's a local business that might be able to handle it all in bulk?

I think we can pay to do it...but have bought a slide/negative holder thing, and have downloaded a few apps. My sister has some success with an app. Will crack on!

Some great pics here! Looking for advice on processing a whole load of old photos. My Dad passed away this week, so we have a house to sort through. As well as all his photos and slides from the 60s-00s (seriously, what was the point of those?!), my maternal grandfather was a very keen photographer, there are folders of his stuff. pre-WW2, lots of my Mum when she was young in the 40s-50s. I think these were just cleared from my grandparents house 26 years ago. Feeling very mortal and thinking of our kids clearing out our house in 25 years... Anyway, would like to digitise all the old prints and slides, what's the best way to do that, and also organise, any recommendation for archive/sharing software? Sorry for your loss. I lost my Dad in May and had already scanned our family slides from the 70s/80s - around 500 in total and we got chance to look through the lost memories before he passed away. I'm now looking to scan/convert some old Super8 film next - not sure what is on them so hope there will be some nice surprises. Biggest project however was 5 yrs scanning around 18,000 slides taken by my late Father-in -law I'd suggest being patient! I picked up a Nikon Coolscan5000 way back and imported a slide feeder from the US so I could drop a full film in and leave it scanning. Did some light IR based cleaning but for some film stocks ran some batch processing to bring them back to something like original condition. He was a keen photographer but these were really 'snaps' rather than professional standard, but as an archive from around 1943 to 2005 it was quite something. He also kept pocketbooks of EVERY slide, dates, location, people. I felt obliged to scan the lot! I subscribe to SmugMug and provided logins to the family. It is a nice interface across multiple platforms and allowed the wider family to dip in and browse when and where they want.

Sony releasing yet another camera today. They’ve been churning them out recently. I've been keeping an eye on what the A7CII might turn out to be. It's coming in at just over £2,000 but has a lot of features on a comparatively small body. I have had an A7II with a small collection of zoom and prime lenses since 2015 and have had great fun with it over the years. I also now have a 3 year old kid. I thought I'd be taking the camera everywhere with me when we go on adventures. However I've barely used it since the kid outgrew the pram. I packed the camera with a 16-35mm lens on our last holiday, which was typically my go-to set-up when away, but it never got taken out of the bag all holiday. Reaching for the phone to take photos was so much more convenient. It helps that camera-phone photos are improving all the time (I have an iPhone 14 Pro). It seemed like such a hassle to have to carry a 1kg camera around a wrist-strap and having to worry about not knocking it while holding the child's hand on the other side. I was hoping that the A7CII would be a good solution for me, but the body size and weight seems only marginally slimmer than the A7II, even if the tech inside the body is much improved. Maybe I just need a sling strap to accommodate both the kid and camera (I've only used a wrist one to date). Any recommendations for a compact, quality camera that isn't silly money i.e. less then £2k? It doesn't have to be full-frame or necessarily have interchangeable lenses. I like to do candid photography at parties and when socialising more than anything, so a decent low-light performance without a flash is a must. Thanks.

I’ve got one and I love it.

If you're not put off by a fixed focal length, you could try one of Fuji's X-100 cameras. Pete can attest to how fun they are, I think.

They are indeed excellent cameras and I can wholeheartedly recommend them, if you can find one. Either the X100F or X100V would be worth looking at.
Another suitable Fuji option if you're looking to lessen bulk would be the Fujifilm X-T30 II.

I've an X-T10 and it's really diddy. Highly recommend. The X-T4 is what I carry now which is quite a bit bulkier (and actually nicer to use as a result) but you definitely notice the weight in comparison.

I officially have too many cameras. Canon 5D mk1 Canon 5D mk2 Fuji X100F Fuji X100V Fuji X30 Fuji X-T5 Sigma DP1 Sigma DP2
And whatever random film cameras I still have kicking around the place
The X30 and Sigmas are out on long term loans to friends. I should downsize the rest but no.
Here's a link to the case if anyone is in the market for one. Great quality at a fraction of the cost of a Pelican case:

LOL I thought I was bad! at leas I don't have two versions of the same model 🤣 How do you find the improvements in the X100? I have the OG one and AF is far too slow for kids and pets

I started with the X100S which I then lost while drunk. The F was then a noticeable improvement in autofocus, particularly in low light, and high ISO is loads better. That being said I think the images from the S have something special about them that I can't put my finger on.
The V is incrementally better than the F. Not a huge leap but better. I particularly like the new texture on the on/off switch, it's much more grippy whereas the S and the F were too smooth in my opinion.
I am sooooo used to the shutter button on the S and F, I'm finding the V to be more sensitive somehow. Or rather I'm taking pictures when I only wanted to focus. That's just a case of me needing to get used to it.
I never use the screen for composing so I neither need nor like the fact the screen tilts on the V. But its pretty unobtrusive. I turned off the touchscreen functionality.
My biggest gripe is that the guy who made the cases for my S and F decided to discontinue the X100 line due to the frequency of new models. So I can't get one of his cases for the V.

Need some Blackmagic Design love. I’ve got the Pocket 4K and I absolutely love it. Tempted to get a 6K Pro but going to see what the next camera they come out with next is.

Those shots are lovely! Just got myself a camera as well. A photographing friend recommended the micro four third system since I wanted something light weight, so went with the Olympus mark iv. Seems good so far, but haven't had the chance to use it much yet. Already thinking of getting another lens for it.

Olympus have a really good system by all accounts, and buying new lenses (whether you need them or not) is half the fun of photography imo!

Really nice! Love the fox in particular.

Thanks chaps. There's apparently a peregrine nest on one of the old railway bridges by a lake near me, but I've never seen them!

I ended up ordering a Sony A7CII, which isn't going to be much different to the dimensions of the A7II that I have, but I'll get a more compact lens to go with it. I've been seriously tempted by getting a used Fuji X100V, but the better low-light performance from the full-frame camera is something I'd miss to much I think.

A couple of pictures I like: Masts at the Southampton Boat Show
My friend who is notoriously unwilling to be photographed. First decent-ish one of her in the 15 years we've been friends, despite all my attempts

I'm looking at the photography on show in this thread and wondering - how many of you have made money from selling your work, or is it all just a bit of fun for you?
I'm wondering because I've looked at stuff in galleries around town before and thought, "I'm sure I've got better stuff in my camera roll than on that wall." I don't mean that in a big headed way, I'm just thinking how one goes about monetising a hobby.
Getting better at it is clearly the first step, but after that...?
