John Wick - 9/10 It’s just a lean, cool action movie that builds a whole assail fantasy world with minimal effort. I like all of them but the first is still the best. Only watched it tonight to check out the new surround set-up and I’m.happy with that too.
Might watch 2 and 3 over the weekend, and maybe the Matrix trilogy next, for maximum Keanu Kung-fu’ey action.

One Cut of the Dead
Second time watching this. If anything it was even more brilliant than the first time.
I can't tell you why it's brilliant without spoiling it a bit (seriously, don't even read reviews before watching this if you can). But it's brilliant, and nothing like what you'd expect from the title. Funny, clever, heartwarming, all that good stuff.
10/10

Has anyone seen Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings? I'm intrigued because Marvel have taken action movies to a level that can't be ignored, but I also feel it's pandering to the Chinese market in no small way. That's not intended as a racist conjecture, more of an aversion to the artistic direction. I'm just not keen on Chinese cinema outside of Hong Kong and it might pander more toward some sweeping elitism that used to make me choke on my tongue when I spent time there.
I might have had a drink and way overthought this post.

The Voyeurs
So what if Rear Window, but an erotic thriller?
It works up to a point and tries to make a point about porn and social media and stuff. But after a bit it stops being a thriller and it hits the “popular for women” button on Pornhub. Nothing wrong with going a bit Fiddy Shades as long as it’s good, but this falls into the common problem of characters behaving inexplicably just so there can be a payoff later. And the twists always feel wrought and don’t hold up to scrutiny.
But bewbs tho.

Kate
As it was direct to netflix and the piss poor record they have with bringing new films to their service, I expected to be shit like Jolt and Gunpowder Milkshake etc. its actually really good, more in the style of atomic blonde than female john wick. Like its set in Japan and you never feel Kate is like invincible super hero type or can beat up thugs twice her size easily. Its hardly a classic but does everything well (some dodgy CGI on the car chase, looked like something from ps2 game)
Mary Elizabeth Winstead is excellent and Woody Harrelson is fine.
8.5/10

The Green Knight 5/10 Well, that was a let down, I think I overhyped myself on this one.

The Matrix Still holds up. Special effects still work, visual design solid and iconic, action still pretty spectacular. Suffers slightly by all its key scenes being parodied into the ground but even the plot still works without feeling too tired. Its a lot more of a straightforward action film than I remembered. 9/10 The Matrix Reloaded Again the action looks great, for both films there is a bigger focus on practical effects than you get these days which helps. Falls over slightly by introducing a million new characters and removing all the lean streamlining the original plot had. I know the reputation is it gets bogged down in undergraduate philosophy but I think the bigger issue is how much it tries to expand its world and lore. Zion ends up being like a horny Star Wars Prequel and the Matrix is suddenly filled with more characters than a Bioware RPG. It completely loses focus. Still though, that highway sequence. 7.5/10 Matrix Revolutions I was probably a bit harsh on Reloaded for cramming a season’s worth of TV into two and quarter hours because its not really its own film and Revolutions would have been really bogged down if any of that exposition was passed into this film. Spectacular stuff, again the focus on practical effects and wire work means it looks as good, if not better, than a lot of what Marvel and especially DC have put out recently. The battle in Zion in particular still looks fantastic. Some of the Messianic stuff is a bit heavy handed but there’s less of it than I remembered. Agent Smith is in it less than I remembered too. And less philosophy wanking. Just a tremendous smart stylish action series. I think this score is for both sequels together. 9/10

Reloaded is just about passable, due to it having some decent set pieces. Revolutions has no redeeming qualities at all.

I watched Revolutions a few days ago, it was ok. Better than I remembered. Everything about Zion, the drills and sentinels, flying the ship back in time to set off an EMP (because they don’t have any in Zion for emergencies, obviously) was rubbish, none of it mattered in the slightest as none of the characters you care about were there anyway. I think I prefer the main Neo arc better in 3 than 2, but 2 has vastly better set pieces

I do like the APCs fighting in Revolutions, and Captain Mifune.

Another plus is they’re all about 2 - 2:15 long when these days the sequels would both be 3hr monstrosities.

The only decent action sequence in Reloaded and Revolutions combined is the car chase.
And there's literally nothing else redeeming in either of them. The bar is so stunningly low I'll be kind of impressed if Resurections ends up being worse.

I haven't seen the sequels since they were released. I'm tempted to watch them again before the new ones out. I did the three again earlier in the year almost by accident more than through anything link to the new film. Anyway, the first is still amazing. The other two are objectively bad tbh, but it was still great fun watching them. They are certainly creative and interesting films if nothing else.

I enjoyed it fwiw, apart from the ropey animal CGI that really takes you out of the moment.
Should be in cinemas/on prime near the end of the month, until then you'd have to yarrr it.

The chateau fight is much better than the freeway chase scene, although that green 996 was amazing and they got the sound right which is almost unheard of
