Sully
Entertaining enough if Clint’s direction is as basic as it gets but it works and it’s a solid 90 minute watch. 3/5
Shang Chi and the ten rings
First trip to the cinema since Covid began \o/. New dune and bond trailers/hype as wetted my appetite so thought I start going back now. Cinema was about a third full so plenty of space and felt quite comfortable.
As for the film, A mixed bag for me. Someone mentioned above liking this more than Black Panther but I felt the other way. The fighting in this is outstanding, really liked the score and sometimes it looks great too. Also appreciate they tried to do the full martial arts epic too. There is a lot to like about the film.. Just, I felt at times it was a little obnoxious especially when it didn’t need to be. It kinda of leans into hero and crouching tiger whilst also leaning to modem American comedies and obvious merchandising opportunities. The film has been praised by a lot of people for this, and some stuff is quite funny and good fun but at times it felt a little tonally awkward. 3.5/5 Provably just about scrapes into second tier marvel for me. Maybe a high 3.

Candyman On one hand it was pretty good, it firmly links itself to the original movie and references the events continuously throughout, whilst updating the mythos and moving the story forward. How satisfying that is depends on the viewer, as it unfortunately lost me in the final act with a few bizarre jumps that, while I suppose made sense in terms of the narrative, didn't in terms of pacing and character development. It also felt like I was getting a lecture every few minutes. I know these issues are important, and I know this is something that we must be aware of. I can understand the anger, and resentment. It could have been done in a much more subtle manner imo and it very much laboured the same point over and over. I thought, and feel free to correct me, that the first film very much made these same points anyway, but this retreads the same path in a much noisier fashion. Ultimately I think it is worth a watch, and has some very inventive moments, as well as being quite a beautiful film. But for me it was one laboured lecture too many to make me fully enjoy it. 6/10
Also: Ragged breathing is no substitute for Tony Todd's incredibly malevolent booming voice.

The Predator
It's that bad I had to stop myself from laughing. The fact it uses the theme from the original film is an insult.

The Predator is the worst film I’ve seen in ages. As in properly unenjoyable not just naff or not my taste.

Saw Shang-Chi last night - first cinema visit since March 2020, whoop!
Film was great. First 90 minutes feel like a refreshingly different take on Marvel: Shang-Chi feels a lot more down-to-earth, his vibe with his friend Katy is fun & frothy; it almost plays like an Ant-Man film, except there's typically angsty familial stuff going on, and of course lots of really insane fights. There are some incredibly set-pieces, although probably the best one is the first big action scene on a runaway bus.
Unfortunately it does go a bit OTT at the end with huge CGI spectacle that unfortunately obscures some of the choreography and takes away from the humanity a little bit. In a similar way to Wonder Woman, if you've seen that; excellent film that feels a little bit different, but then just has to have the craziest, biggest FX showdown at the end.
Anyway, overall I really liked it and I can't wait to see more Shang-Chi in the MCU.

The Suicide Squad - 6/10
I expected more from this. Much more. The way this film has been hyped up I was expecting something of Guardians of the Galaxy level quality. As it is, if it came down to watching this or the original 2016 Suicide Squad, I'd watch the original. I don't hate Suicide Squad at all though.
This is the polar opposite to the original. There's a lot more colour and humour in this. They've also managed to have a decent battle at the end that avoids the "beam to the sky" trope. No gloop men either.
I really wanted to like it more but I didn't for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, the humour is very hit and miss. I just thought it was forced and despite having some really funny moments, much of it didn't do much for me.
More importantly, it's the characters that make all the difference. I prefer the original roster by a long way. King Shark and Peacemaker are great but that's about it in terms of new characters. I really didn't care for any of the other new ones. I'd take Diablo, Deadshot and Joker over Polka Dot Man, Bloodsport and Ratcatcher 2. I've yet to be convinced that Harley without Joker is a good idea, despite being a huge Margot Robbie fan. I thought Peter Capaldi's character was rubbish and the returning characters were much better in the original too.
I still think it's a decent enough film. The effects are spectacular, the action is good and I love seeing Joaquín Cosío in anything. Nobody can play a slimy scumbag better!

Doesn’t bode well when GOTG is already down the Marvel pecking order for me. I liked the sequel more.

The Unholy
Decent horror film that while the story is familiar in a general sense, it does manage to add its own spin in places. For a short film it does take a while to get going, but does manage some effective atmosphere.

Monster Hunter - 2/10
I've seen some proper turds this year so far but this is one almighty, monster sized one. I thought it was be a bit of light-hearted fun. A bit of a romp. I even like a few of the Resident Evil films director Paul W.S. Anderson did but the last one was utter shite and I didn't think he could do any worse. I was wrong.
He just seems to do three things with the camera in this film. Orbits, zooms and slow-motion. Constantly. They can be really cool but when you see them for what seems like thirty of so times, it's excruciating. He's just trying to hide how utterly shallow and crap this film is but doing the shiny shiny thing. It doesn't work.
I've never played any of the Monster Hunter games but they can't be this boring. I imagine that after all these years the franchise has a deep, rich and dare I suggest an interesting history to pick from. Instead what we get is shoot things with arrows and big guns. Over and over.
The only thing I got out of this is that if you ever get teleported to another world, make sure you have a Hershey chocolate bar with you. If shared with your adversary it'll prove that you are a caring, smart, intelligent person and will forge alliances that were previously not thought possible. There's one slight problem with this plan in reality though. Hershey "chocolate" tastes like the most venomous, vile shit that the most evil of monsters could only drop out of it's evil asshole or assholes (depending on how many it has)! Probably. Disgusting stuff.
Anyway, I digress. To give the film some credit, it looks as though there's been a fair amount of money sent on the effects and the creature designs are impressive. I assume they've been taken from the game.
Bottom line? The film is the same quality of a Hershey bar. I assume Hotel Chocolat were not interested.

Hershey’s are historically famous for providing chocolate rations to soldiers, it’s a widely accepted trope in American culture. Your review leaves me wondering just how much else of the film you’ve misunderstood

He's not exactly wrong with the score. It's a fucking awful film that I gave up on after half an hour.

I thought it was because it was meant as a last resort food ration and if it'd tasted good soldiers would have eaten it all at once?

The Informer
I do like the lead, and I'd happily watch him in more things. This isn't a great film, but solid enough. Everyone is fine, and the story unfolds at a reasonable pace. A small point, but I appreciated that the fights weren't between super ninjas and that it actually took time to choke someone out.

Turks & Caicos (TV Movie 2014)
Yeah. That wasn’t as good as Page Eight. Christopher Walken bumbled about, Winona Ryder did her confused face. Bill Nighy walked along the beaches in a full suit at all times. For an undercover spy he sure as heck stood out. Just peculiar and a bit aimless really. I hope the third film picks it back up and finishes on a high.

Cruella - 7.5/10. I liked that a lot. The (relatively well- trodden) format worked and Emma Stone was ace.

Does it mention that the chocolate tastes exactly like sick? I remember a student gave me a big bar as a thank you gift once, I'd never had one before and was excited to try one. I managed one square before washing out the taste with some juice. Truly terrible.

Wrong Turn (the new one) - 7/10 Much better than it has any right to be, I think linking it to a crap franchise was the wrong move as its a good film in its own right and not just for the genre. Go in with an open mind and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Some decent actors in it too
Spiderman Far from Home - 6/10 2nd viewing as I couldn't really remember any of it and the new one is out soonish. Yeah its not great, it ticks all the right boxes but something is missing. Also I'm sick to death of the Tony Stark love in, to be honest I was sick of his character by Age of Ultron. Gyllenhaal is brilliant in this though, its a shame he wasn't in a better film

I didn't even get to the end of Far from Home. It was really dull. Shame because the first one is great.
