The Lighthouse
Second time seeing it. It's so weird and funny and horrifying, I don't think there's any film quite like it.
I kind of want to memorise Willem Dafoe's Neptune speech, and bring it out whenever someone tells me that they don't like my cooking.

The Inventor : Out for Blood in Silicon Valley
HBO doc about Elizabeth Holmes and her well intentioned but sketchy Theranos company. Wife wanted to watch due to current ongoing trial.
Fascinating story but this tends to flag, I'd have liked more info on how she got from zero to 800 employees so quickly, and how she dealt with the aftermath.

Wonder Woman 84.
Far, far, far, far, far too long.
There is probably a solid 8/10 hidden inside this bloated 6/10.
If only editors existed.

Sicario 9/10
Finally got around to watching Sicario. What a fantastic engrossing film from start to finish. Not a wasted minute through the whole thing which cracked along at a great pace without feeling rushed.
Emily Blunt is in some of my favourite movies of the moment with this and Edge Of Tomorrow.
My favourite part was the decapitated bodies hung upside down.

The inconsistency of the maguffin, the preachy politics, a superhero who barely appears as a superhero in their own movie, the role of coincidence because the movie has to happen and the whole fucked up matter of using an another person's body in non consensual and dangerous acts. It's an awful film and the only reason it got such a kind welcome at the beginning is because we were all just dealing with the first lot of Covid and people saw it as uplifting rather than the tripe it is

Don't Breathe 2
Stephen Lang is back as the blind war vet in this decent sequel. This tale revolves around his daughter and a group that lay siege to his house. What do they want I wonder? Won't say anymore as it has a decent twist in it. Pretty good sequel with some good set pieces. It lacks the tension of the original, but still has its moments.

Don't Breathe 2 - 6/10 A solid enough sequel I guess... Kept us entertained with a nice twist as mentioned above, and didn't outstay its welcome.
Zone 414 - 4/10 Can't be bothered to look into it, but wouldn't be surprised if it shares a screenwriter with that recent Hugh Jackman nonsense. It's like Blade runner but shit.
Dallas Buyers Club - 8/10 Not sure why it took me so long to get around to watching this. Fantastic performance by Leto who I usually dislike.
Those Who Wish Me Dead - 4/10 I'm presuming they used CGI flames to avoid melting Jolie's plastic expressionless face.

Old School
Funnier than I remember, quite an odd comedy in that the ‘lead role’ is almost irrelevant

The sequel isn't anywhere near as good, but still a decent watch.

The sequel isn't anywhere near as good, but still a decent watch. I have heard that sadly. As long as it is 'decent' though that should do. It was just a great watch. Been struggling recently with seeing a movie all the way through and was a bit worried that I'd get an hour in and fall asleep or something but it was totally engaging from the get-go. Will leave it a bit to watch Day of The Solenoid or whatever it is called. Also - how much does Del Toro look like a wax model of Pitt? Answer is loads!

Just found that Those Who Wish Me Dead was written by Taylor Sheridan, who wrote Sicario. And Sicario 2, Hell or High Water and Wind River.
I also didn't realise that Sicario was directed by Denis Villeneuve.

Sicario 2 is decent enough, just not as good as the first.

Page Eight - Netflix
None of your rolling about and jumping out windows spy stuff. This is administration conversations and I enjoy the quieter style of it. Think 70s Alec Guinness Tinker Taylor.
Bill Nighy is great and the supporting actors all get their moment to shine. Very understated and it has two follow up films also on Netflix which are hopefully just as good.

The Devil All the Time
Wow, where to start with this. Some individual very good performances, really interesting themes and ideas but fuck me nothing happened and the pacing/ narrative structure was all over the piss. Got about an hour in and gave up. I'm sure there's a good story in there but fucked if I knew or cared.

The Nest - 9/10
Film by Martha Martha Martha director with heartthrob Jude Law as a cocksure banker and pretty crap husband somewhere in a ridiculous mansion in Surrey. Simmers very gradually as things go awry. Very good.

Sicario 2 is an almost entirely pointless sequel rushed out after the surprise success of the first. I thought it was okayish on first viewing but watching it again recently it really is mostly crap. It also properly leans in to being Trumpy rather than the cynical, ambiguous approach of the first film.
I wouldn't bother.

Super - 10/10
The bit at the end where Rainn Wilson passionately declares that
'You don't butt in line. You don't sell drugs. You don't molest little children.
You don't profit off the misery of others. The rules were set a long time ago, they don't change'.
Is one of the most beautifully written and delivered dialogue in movie history. A stark contrast the bit where they show anime tentacle porn at the beginning.

Statham is good in a bunch of things. But then, I enjoy action films, spectacle and nonsense. Talking of which, I saw Shang-Chi today. 9/10. If we were to rank it in the context of origin films like the other ones from Marvel like Captain America 1, Doctor Strange, Thor 1, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, I’d say it is the best origin film of them all. A villain with a goal and a back story that simple folk like me can appreciate. Lunatics like the Red Skull that want to rule the world or Thanos who want to destroy (half the) world don't get me was invested as a husband who is grieving and *spoiler*. Highly recommend it. And that Simu Liu has masses of charisma. A very fun lead.

Tbh I thought the main actor was the weakest part of it. He wasn't bad, he was just kind of... there. Bland.
I guess it didn't help that he was across from Tony Leung (the guy playing the Mandarin), who is one of the world's most charming and charismatic actors. Anyone would look bland next to that. But yeah, Simu Liu didn't really excite me.
It was still a good movie, mind. Not the best of the Marvels, but mid to top tier.

He means Alex Wolff but I thought Cage was as good as anything he's done for the last 25 years. It's a great performance. Alex Wolff is amazing but I was referring to the actors in the two specific scenes that he's present in but not involved with. Don't know how to do spoilers is I'll just leave it at that.

Sweet Girl
Run of the mill revenge story, with slightly modern setting (big pharma is bad) and fairly obvious twist.
Jason Momoa doing his usual emotional range.

All the emotions from A to B What is it with Netflix, is any content good content to them. The odd decent offering, but most of it shouldn't pass a first reading. They should offer a fortune to the people that purchase scripts for HBO

He's right though. It's almost as good as this classic from White Chicks: Kevin Copeland: Has anyone ever told you you look just like Denzel Washington? Section Chief Elliott Gordon: Yeah, actually I have heard it once... or twice. Kevin Copeland: What a beautiful chocolate man! Beautiful!

Aussie horror about dementia and its effect on those involved. Creepy, depressing and surprisingly affecting throughout. Really good.
