Saw this thread appear and went, "Ooh, a remake of the good GTA" (and London/2) but no, old thread...
I wonder if they could do the original justice in a remake or best off just playing it as is... Not tried it on a modern PC in a long, long time... I never could get into the 3D entries and 2 wasn't great...

Oof! Thanks, dogbot - not what I was hoping to hear, perhaps, but your honesty is appreciated No sugar coating around here, I'm afraid.

I loved it back then but I tried replaying it recently and the engine absolutely sucks. The controls need a complete overhaul.

"Removed all the references to Grove Street Games"
Don't worry, Rockstar. Everyone will remember.

Yeah, that’s the only version I’m interested in. Not fussed about playing them on the TV anymore

It is all the more laughable, that they could fix a 20 year games on modern consoles, but not on the previous gen.

I assumed the Switch version would have sold well enough to warrant it. It certainly did enough to warrant porting over Red Dead the following year.

Maybe they’re porting it to Switch 2 and want to be able to sell it to Nintendo users again?

From the video I watched, VC and SA look more like the originals now. III just looks darker now.

I booted up GTA III on an original PS2 not that long ago and it is pretty dark on a flat screen. Of the GTA games from that generation it is the darkest and the murkiest. It's got a pretty unique vibe, tones often smudge and there's an aura of fuzzy dinginess. I think the original holds up as it is (and was), if you have a CRT even better.
At this point, I think emulation with QOL hacks is the only solution for games of this period that keeps them feeling authentic. During that narrow span of time just before the PS2 arrived when PS1 and N64 games were getting ported to the Dreamcast, I played various games that were improvements on a technical level but somehow things that were never meant to be rendered cleanly getting a spit and polish and dragged out into the cold light of day never did them any favours.

Definitely an improvement on San Andreas. There’s still weird texture issues around Tony in Vice City.. and the framerate is the same as far as I can see. Hopefully SwitchUp does a video soon.

Man, I really want to play through San Andreas again, but the first couple of missions on the PS5 were heartbreakingly bad. Younger me was sad.

Yeah it’s pretty rough going. Especially if you played V recently. I said it in another thread, when you go outside the city for the first time, just didn’t have the same feeling

Only minus is the framerate, which for me isn't a deal breaker.
The CEO of Grove Street games is annoyed that his company has been taken off..

I haven't played San Andreas.
Rockstar gave it away free on PC a while back, and I went to grab it, and there were so many pages of EULA and different launchers that it wanted me to install that I gave up.

It's probably my least favourite of the trilogy.
Just felt too bloated with daft systems in comparison to 3/VC.

Yeah, all that weight and fitness stuff was naff. And the cities in San Andreas were big, but not crafted with the kind of detail and thoroughness of GTA 3.
I will almost certainly pick this up on Switch now, but I hope they haven’t fixed the bunny hop glitch from the original San Andreas, in which you jump about 20ft into the air and scale buildings. That was literally my favourite this about that game.

I’ve been playing a bunch of SA and crazy the difference the fog makes. As much as they clearly fucked this up, a lot of these older games getting upscaled, I think they need some OG details otherwise all the textures just look utterly shit.
