Painting the models takes so long that when it comes to the bases, I just wanna glue and seal scatter to them tbh.
Appreciate the concept though and appreciate the thought too.

Regards ‘ardcoat. I’ve got some and tried it for some wet look eyeball/brains stuff. Don’t actually think it’s a great finish for it. But yeah putting it all over a model will give you a shiny model.
I’ve used it most recently to put a base for transfers on (see Smurfs however many pages back).
You can dull it down - either with something like Lahmian Medium or simply by putting matte varnish over it. The latter approach is basically what I did once the marines were finished, and you wouldn’t know there is gloss under there.
My go-to with varnish is Duncan Rhodes’ contrast medium/AK ultra matte mix recommended by Zyrr. It gives a really nice finish and obviously more protection than nothing. However I don’t think it’s as durable as a proper gloss varnish so the ideal if you game a lot would probably be both.
Varnish can tint the colour underneath to some extent too of course so there’s always a compromise.
I also reckon there will be better quality/value gloss varnishes out there of course, like anything by Citadel.

Got a massive job on this weekend - set myself a challenge to paint my remaining 10 Hormagaunts and 3 Leapers by close of play on Monday. Suspect I’m not going to make it but I do have Monday off. Today’s task is all tactical rocks and all chitin. For gaunts/gants I just use one pass of contrast purple and a Drybrush for their armour but my process for larger models is probably needlessly complex so I’m sure I’ll fail!
Manage to build and prime my three new warriors too. I absolutely love these and I think they are the coolest Tyranids by a long shot. Have built them with two Stranglers and two Venom Canons as you can take one of each per three.
I’ve also modelled all six with different upper arms - two have talons, the prime has a sword and whip, I’ve got a ludicrous one with a venom canon and two swords (previously posted) and I’ve managed to get two with basic hands looking really dynamic. I do like it when you can get variety between models in a unit and I can’t wait for these to be finished - with the winged prime that is going to be one cool-arsed block of f*ck you marines.
They are definitely the ‘Nid equivalent to terminators I think.
I’ll find that 11th gets released next month or something now before I’ve played a game and they’ll bring the war gear tax back and I’ll be f*cked.

For a while Forgeworld sold Shrikes, which were basically Tyranid warriors with wings and were as awesome as that sounds. They discontinued them at some point around 8th Edition, if I'm remembering correctly. When the Winged Prime was announced I thought they might have returned, but sadly it wasn't to be. Maybe next edition?

It would be awesome because then you could use the movement better - however I’ll take the sustained hits stuff it affords the regular warriors.

Maybe it's just my eyes, but Sotek Green and Ahriman Blue look exactly the bloody same.

Username checks out.
Just loaded both up on the website and clicked between pages. The sampler shows Sotek to be a darker shade of the same colour IMO. So you may be right in terms of the colour, but it looks like there should be a difference in the brightness.

Yeah overall winner is unbelievable. A fairly obvious idea but executed to perfection. Worthy winner.

Lovely stuff on display, I may as well be doing potato prints and finger painting in comparison.
After a few months of modern day zombie fun, I finally returned to my goblin army project, and resumed the batch painting of the wolf riders that have sat there with the wolves done but nothing else. I'm about 75% done on them now, and so to celebrate only having another 80 Goblins to build and paint, I pre-ordered the new (old) GW Orc and Goblin Battalion box.
I really am an idiot.

Fantastic model, so much lovely detail. Took me a while to spot the banshee in the mirror image, ha!

Fork, don’t underestimate the wow factor of a big army on display painted to a decent standard vs one tiny model painted to museum standard. That’s what I’m telling myself 😜

Think the Space Hulk diorama is my fave, bit OTT, but pushes a cover art style to the limit.
But yeah, witchcraft (plus talent and practice). Need to look up the Taro fella with numerous(!) entries.

BUN TUMBER CHROMATIC SCAILE HEY GUIYYSE Just watched his colour theory for dummies type video and his accent was MUCH more subtle! I think he’s leaning into a bit for the mini guide videos maybe?

YOU LEAVE MARCO ALONE Always liked his stuff, and was the first fella to explain you don't need varnish stages to oil wash acrylics, and will forever be on a pedestal for that tip alone. These guys will be treated in such fashion:

Cheers for recommending the nail varnish stand, lads.
Overall, 9 out of 10. Taking a point off as the Monkey Shoulder didn't fit.

It fits just fine, it just needs a lie down because it's too full.

Those two blues on the right look suspiciously similar
Well I failed my painting challenge anyway. Need to start being realistic about this.
I planned to finish including varnishing and basing, a unit of 10 and a unit of 3.
I’ve got the unit of 10 basically finished except for highlights and accents on claws and hooves. The unit of three have painted scenery bits and bases, which is a start.
There’s a potential I can finish the ten tomorrow if I buckle down, but we’re looking at booking holidays, will likely have a long day at work, and have chores etc. Got to get out of this bad habit of just seeing the hours in a time period and thinking I’ll be solidly painting through them and then being disappointed when I haven’t finished in that time. Because the reality is after carefully painting 20 sets of hooves I’m putting them down for an hour or two!

I'd personally ditch model based targets in favour of "I have this much time, I'm going to paint for X of it". Model targets seem kind of pointless unless you're trying to get something finished in time for a game (or another pos arriving before they're finished), because you're always improving and seeing extra bits to pick out/highlight.
But I play Death Guard and don't have any nice easy rank and file so ignore me. Like literally zero models like that. Even Plague Marines are about 77% details and I will have to heavily convert my rhinos and whatnot to feel worthy.

Absolutely convinced I need an airbrush as soon I'm in my own place again. Even just priming stuff looks like the business compared to waiting for a good weather weekend and finding a good windless spot as the witching hour hits at exactly the right moment when your models are all set on strips, the can is shaken and warmed and no-one from Amazon or wherever is likely to ring the doorbell

We need to design the ultimate painting shed. Would need a good ventilation system, obviously.
