While I've been into games workshop games for years, including 40k, reading the magazine it says that there are around 1000 active space marine chapters each made up of about 1000 marines. That doesn't sound like a lot? Especially given the number of planets humanity covers? It's liberally interpreted. GW usually use the cop out of "nothing can be trusted". Chapters like the Space Wolves don'tgive a fuck and have way more than 1,000 anyway. There's still the Imperial Guard, Planetary Defence Forces, Sisters of Battle and other factions defending sectors on a day to day basis. Then you've got the Grey Knights, Black Templars, Deathwatch that probably sit apart from the "regular" chapters, and most chapters have gone way over 1000 with the Primaris project. Or they juat straight up culled 1000 veterans each.

40K has a ‘interesting ‘ relationships with scale at times. See starships etc and widely varying sizes.
It’s all handwaved away which is fine. It’s not men any to be super serious like Star Trek nerds.

Before they were broken up after the Heresy, each of the original 20 Legions numbered between 100k and 250k in strength. Post Heresy, the remaining loyalist legions were supposed to be splintered off into Chapters containing only 1000, but as pointed out above, Chapters like the Space Wolves just did their own thing and flaunted the new rules.
I think the overall scarcity of Space Marines within the Imperium makes sense, though. The main fighting forces of the Imperium are the Astra Militarum, the Adepta Sororitas and the Mechanicus, with the Astartes supposedly only really being deployed where absolutely necessary.
Of course 90% of all 40k fiction and model releases end up being Space Marine focussed though, as that's what sells at the end of the day.

Especiallly when so much effort seems to have gone into AoS stuff without any love shown to 40k for, in some cases, 30 years

I've been down a fanfic rabbit hole, conjuring lore to return The Squats to 40k.
/Deep narrator voice on
"As the Tyranid hoards swarmed The Squats homeworlds, along with them came the insidious Genestealer Cults. But as The Squats had a long lifespan and slow reproductive cycle, these cults struggled to establish themselves sufficiently, prior to The Tyranid Hive descending upon the world and laying waste to its population. But on one world of Tyr'gath, a Genestealer Primarch did emerge. So the chitinous hoards chose to forego their feast for now, content to return and take their repast later, without wasting biomass in an ultimately futile fight.
The Squat's ancestors had long been a source of limited psychic abilities to the elders of the homeworlds. As their worlds were devoured, they awoke from slumber in their heavenly halls, saw what had become of their race.... And wept. The Genestealer Primarch on Tyr'gath, suffered hallucinations and fever, sweating and convulsing for days, at the brink of death. But upon his recovery, the tears of The Squat ancestors had cleansed his mind of The Tyranids baleful influence. Free of the hive's control, he came to two horrifying conclusions. The first was the twisted corruption of his own form, his skin crawled at the sight of his own body, so he took to blindfolding himself. The second and more terrible was that he was the only thing keeping the world safe. Were he to be killed, the the Tyranid hoard would fall upon this world, like insects upon a cadaver. But for him to remain safe, he world have to continue with his blighted destiny and corrupt the remaining Squats on Tyr'gath.
And so, the situation settled. The cult grew slowly, bringing ever more into the fold. Plotting, scheming and positioning their brethren in postitions of power and influence, ready to take the entire world one day. But not for the Hive, who still raged and ravaged through The Squat's space, devouring all they encountered. The Primarch would take the world, to forge it into his instrument of revenge. For, though the Primarch was free of the Hive's mind control, he retained the instinct for biomechanics, which allows the breadth and depth of diversity of The Tyranid's tools of conquest and consumption. This, along with The Squats long tradition of engineering and craftsmanship, allowed the Primarch to develop Bioweapons, guns and vehicles grown from biological material. He also developed Cybernetic implants, to free his brethren of the corrupted flesh he had cursed them with.
Then the time came, once the cult had taken Tyr'gath, armed and fortified the world ready for the teeth and claws of the hoard. The Primarch ceased emmiting the psychic aura, which had held the Tyranids at bay, and so they came. Wvae upon wave of the Hive's warriors. And they fell, all to the arms and armour of The Children of Tyr'gath. Once all of the Hive within reach had broken like waves upon the rocky shores of Tyr'gath, the Children set out upon their quest. To fight their way out of Tyranid space. To seek out the oldest human DNA in existence, in order to regain their demi-human heritage. To tear from the heart of The Imperium, the living corpse of their accursed betrayer, The Emperor who had abandoned his allies to the tender mercies of the Hive. So they fight on, ever adapting and developing new bioweapons and cybernetics to hasten their quest. To burst forth from the Tyranid swarm and plunge like a dagger into the heart of the Imperium."
I should get out more.

Picked up issue 4 this morning. Must say I'm really enjoying the drip drip nature of the issues. Life is a bit full on right now and the chilled out nature of model building is doing me good.
Reminds me of that zen feeling of building lego, just with more steps.

Thanks, they still had a couple of copies of issue 3 on the shelf, maybe they already sold out then, I guess people are buying up this one because of the usual cost of the miniatures.
Guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Very nice - love the touches of purple
I was hoping to finish my Space Wolves this weekend, but I messed up the skin on 3 of them, so have to try that bit again. That aside, I'm really pleased with 'em!
I should probably move on to the Tau that came with the Space Wolves in the KillTeam box, but I just can't get enthusiastic about Tau...

Would you be up for swapping the Tau for something else? I really need to motivate my lazy ass into painting again.

I'm keen to get into KillTeam, so having a range of different factions should help to keep things interesting

I quite liked the "moar grimdark, less Gundam" idea here: i.ytimg.com/vi/qIOeq1uQ3uI/maxresdefault.jpgSomebody on reddit also converted the latest Tanith Ghost release into a Tau killteam, but can't find a link now. I'll probably end up with some Tau myself, with the new Killteam box, quite fancy the Sisters to add to the Ecclesiarchy stuff I already have.

Everyone says they hate the Tau but I was always drawn to them. Purely on aesthetics as I don't play the game. Quite obvious Gundam influences which is no bad thing either.

I like the Tau design, but the Kroot look shit. Yeah now you mention it they are not the best are they? Suppose they give a Tau painter a chance to mix things up if they get bored of doing armour all the time. They look like Jabba's wee pal from ROTJ

Imperium issue 5, very tricky to find in the wild but managed it at a local Co-op.
Cool model, a bit fiddly with the glue.

Yeah, the direct buy link out of stock too and scalpers selling it for double the price on ebay, lovely. Hopefully be able to get next week's, should nicely round out my Marines. Then I'll be able to crack on with liberating the Indomitus Necrons from my pile of opportunity.
