Alpharius: Head Of The Hydra is a brilliant read, provided you can accept that, Alpharius being the source, not one word of it may actually be canon truth.

Without getting spoilery, interested to see your thoughts on the second book once you get there, as it’s such an important part of the whole thing.

Are there any good novels that are non Space Marine, potentially non Abnett. I read the first couple Gaunt's Ghosts back in the day and basically decided its low-rent Sharpe in space.
I re-read the Drachenfels novels recently and they're still banging. Some of the weird Ian Watson 40K ones were good, not Chaos Child though, yikes.

I really enjoyed Inquisitor, but I was quite young when I last read it. Not sure if it's even still in print

Are you slightly bored of how swoon-worthy Space Marines are, with their rippling torsos and features carved from the very heavens, yet?

I've also just finished Horus Rising and enjoyed it. Onto the second now but the idea of there being 50 or more of these is crazy. I've read a few other space marine ones and the recent Ghazkrull and they're all pretty similar!

I mean the old Ian Watson Harlequin novel has a whole bunch of Space Marines oiling each other for some reason.... I think if there was more of that they'd be more interesting.

The Blackstone Fortress novels weren’t bad, not even a hint of an Astartes in those.
Well, some light Chaos, but none of the Emperor’s nonsense.

I thought Horus Rising was ok, but nothing more than that. I think I'm up to about number 3... but not a lot is happening.
They seems to be much of a muchness to me, I can't say I thought the Abnett one was especially stronger than the others. They do seem to be dragging stuff out unnecessarily. Horus falling to chaos was rather underwhelming and easy.
Not terrible though, but nothing essential. Maybe it felt dragged out because I already knew most of the major plot points. I think I enjoyed the story more when it was in short snippets in various issues of White Dwarf.
I looked at some reviews of various Horus Heresy novels in the past, and opinion seems to vary a lot depending on the reader and their favorites.

Well I’m on holiday and nearing the end of Horus Heresy book 2 False Gods.
I really enjoyed the first book and was worried that this second would t hold up but so far absolutely has. A couple reviews suggested it was pish but it’s most enjoyable. Maybe because I’m sitting on a verandah drinking booze on a Wednesday afternoon while reading.
I feel sorry for Horus. Having heard nothing of him other than ‘big baddie’ he is quite a beguiling character and his journey has been a good one.
Going to prime the next one to the house tonight and it will be waiting for me when I get back Saturday.
LUPERCAL!!

Yeah they gave him, and many of the Primarchs, a lot more nuance than just "this big dude is great at rip and tear/sieges/breaking sieges/being emo/being ULTRA EMO" etc
Quality of the writing and stories does bounce around a fair bit, but the good stuff is very good and easily identified through reviews.

I found reviews to be not so useful for the Horus Heresy stuff, because almost every book seemed to have about a 4.8 rating... but then when I dug into the reviews they all had some saying "this is one of the best ones" and "this is one of the worst ones". ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I only got up to about book 4, but they all seemed fine. Not mind blowing but not terrible. They do appear to have dragged it out to an insane number of books though ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) TBH, I found Horus's corruption a bit underwhelming as he falls very very easily for someone who's supposedly this incorruptible brother of the emperor. They do give some reasons and justifications, but he seems to go very quickly from pure hero to scheming baddie surrounded by scheming baddies. They did do a better job than I expected of making some of the Space Marines into actually interesting characters though. I haven't read any of the Primarch focused books yet, though I read a few summaries to work out who was who. It's gotta be a hard task to make all those novels interesting when essentially they all follow the same arc, just with 2 endings. Primarch lands on tough planet. Has tough upbringing and becomes tough. Forms some form of personal army/resistance. Emperor shows up and shows him who's the alpha male. Joins emperor. (a) remains loyal to emperor. (b) is very obviously a jealous/butthurt brat who obviously harbors a deep resentment against the emperor, but gets given a massive army anyway. turns out to not be very loyal to emperor. Gotta say, the emperor is a crap dad. Loses all kids. Finally finds kids, but fully 50% of them hate him and turn into juvenile delinquents. Unless it's all part of some obscure plan. So if they've managed to make at least half of them decent and interesting stories then that's pretty good work. Perfect books to read on a veranda drinking booze. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Man I just want Epic back. The idea of Knights and Titans in 40K these days just annoys me.

They should have painted the pilot in orange really...
PS/ That's a cool model, but 100 quid on a 16cm high toy is a bit nuts.
Plus shouldn't a knight be about twice that height?

Eh ? Bit confused because it's just a typical Knight kit, but I guess they're just throwing the pilot in with all of them now, rather than printing seperate Canis Rex boxes. The Corsairs available seperately now has piqued my interest though. Got a bitsbox full of stuff for a fallen Saim Hann pirate group or something...one day. But for now, at least I've started painting again ! Early days, still WiP, but it's a start: ![](https://i.imgur.com/AV2O4FO.jpg)
