Still no word on price for the big box set though. I reckon $250. A couple of the credible rumourmongers (Auspex and Valrak) are saying ยฃ180-199 and $299

I have my unofficial preorder in anyway. My local store said they know Iโll pick it up regardless of price, so Iโm #1 in the queue.
Just need to decide on legions now.

It is a lot of minis and a hardback book that's probably ยฃ40-50 on its own. Doesn't seem that mad a price, it is however all Space Marines, even if they are beakies.

Just need to decide on legions now. Sons of Horus or Night Lords for me. I think. Or maybe Fulgrimโs mob. Either way, fuck the emperor.

I still find the retcon that Primarchs are bigger than Marines annoying.

Must not buy more plastic. Must finish current plastic. No room for new plastic. Repeat.

Big box confirmed to be 180, hoping the books aren't loads.

I donโt really get what the other books are for. From what Iโd heard previously the massive rulebook was supposed to have everything you needed in it.

Just basically big codexes as far as I understand it, with a lot of fluff. The rulebook in the box set only covers the units in the box, which is somewhat commonplace for these releases.

Ah right, so youโll need one for rules for the other stuff theyโre releasing? Bit annoying. Bet theyโre about 50 a pop.

Outside of Kill Team and Necromunda I havenโt actually played a 40k game since I was a teenager. This Horus Heresy stuff is both tempting me back and teaching me a harsh wallet-based lesson.

Most, if not all of the rules can be Blackbearded for 40K. I'd guess you'll be able to find pdfs of the Horus Heresy stuff pretty soon after they release. And with the way GW have been scattering rules across multiple 30quid+ books in recent times, coupled with their overall pricing strategy and remarkable annual profits, it isn't something to feel the slightest bit guilty about

That's an interesting justification. Obviously steal whatever you want from wherever you want, but I don't think you're on the moral high ground with that one.

My local GW store has a specific policy on it. While theyโd prefer everyone be legit, theyโd rather people have rules and codexes and be able to play than have a significant cost barrier to entry to the community. Same with the models, unless itโs tournament play where there are specific rules, they donโt mind proxied non-GW minis. So showing up with printouts from wahapedia wonโt get you kicked out unless itโs something other than social play.
I only know this because I had a convo with the store manager about whether codexes are worth it for fluffโs sake and that came up.

There's fluff in current codex ? Compare the Indomitus (9th ?) rulebook to something like the 3rd Ed BBB, and there's really no comparison. The old stuff was way richer in little boxout stories, things to spark the imagination.
Anyway, GW themselves have said in recent years they see it more about model collecting and the hobby side, compared to a balanced and fair rules set. The constant creep/reboot pattern is pretty old now, and the sooner it moves to some form of free/digital/central regularly updated app/website the better you'd think, seeing as whatever new codex is pretty much available in pdf/scans before they even hit shelves these days.

Itโs mostly background/history info at the front. Then rules, then data cards etc. The older codexes were terrific but also kind of badly laid out for reference.

Someone talk me out of spending $130 on the Horus mini from Forgeworld ahead of Age of Darkness.

Ugh, and $150 on Sanguinius too. Sanguinius looks like he has a massive rock up his bum (and the pose is a bit naff for my tastes in general). Horus is pretty great though ETA It's resin so Worldbreaker will be bent and the lightning claws will be pointing in 5 different directions

I took one look at the forge world prices last week and noped straight of that idea. They are absolutely insane.

The Primarch models are supposedly going to be products directly from GW on the release of AoD, but itโs unclear if that means more sane prices with a mass plastic rollout, or if theyโre just going to host the forgeworld stock with the same price.

Maybe it's not helped by the way they are painted on the Forgeworld website, but Lorgar in particular looks like someone stretched an old mans' scrotum over a mannequin head, the Corax one looks like an awful photo of someone mid-descent on a rollercoaster, and I don't know what they were trying for with The Lion, because his appearance in GW art has varied so tremendously over the years, it's like they tried to amalgamate several different descriptions of him and ended up accidentally sculpting him to look like Barry Gibb.

I might just paint up my Horus bookends and use those on the battlefield. Theyโre considered official models, right? ![](https://i.imgur.com/JeYp7F8.jpg)
