I haven’t made my own but I do have a handful of laser cut mdf kits, they were all pre-painted etc. Mostly ruined houses and other terrain types. They’re decent but storage is a bitch as they’re not really designed to take down and store.

Sounds like there's a gap in the market for pieces you can slot together and take apart easily again for storage. 3D print, or wood cut kits.

That’s more or less what Battle Systems does, it’s cardboard slot together terrain. But then there’s wear and tear from setup and take down.

Anything sturdier than card would be pretty pricey, or risk looking like a grimdark Brio trainset

Highly recommend the Battlesystems stuff Gremmi mentioned above. I’ve got loads of it and it’s great.

There’s some decent cardboard terrain for Infinity too. Thicker stock than the BS stuff, so a bit sturdier, but less variety.

I don't need it to store well! I don't play - I just want to create a table that looks great for my models. MDF scenery's modularity really appeals and I'm all about the painting. I've done a half-decent job with the Octarius terrain but guessing MDF requires a different approach/paints and not sure I can get away with any more paints arriving in the post.

You could use acrylics if you seal the mdf first with a lacquer spray or something, but otherwise no, standard mini paints won’t work well. Going straight on with acrylic will make it all swell and warp.

No idea about anything modern, but very old issues of White Dwarf used to have loads of articles about making DIY scenery for 40k or WFB. I'd imagine it wasn't something at solid as MDF. It was mainly that white foam board with paper on both sides... forget the name, but very lightweight and easy to slice. iirc I made a few, and i *remember* them being good, though if I saw them now they'd probably be awful. Lots of dry brushing for the WFB ones, and lots of plastic gribble for the 40k ones. sowingdragonsteeth.wordpress.com/2018/03/13/building-the-white-dwarf-130-warhammer-fantasy-cottage/this one takes me back.... iirc a lot of the pipes are the platic sprues that the old plastic models came on.

For MDF buildings I've used cheapo acrylics (the artist ones that come in tubes) without much problem - might take 2 coats but after 3 years they're still holding up OK. I've also used tester pots of emulsion paint from B&Q which was actually better - you can do details and a bit of dry brushing using regular acrylic paints on top to finish it off.
Oh, and other tip, if you want to add some texture, mix up some sand/grit with pva glue and water and paint that on first - it seals it and breaks up large flat areas - dry brushing it look really good too as it picks up the grains really well.

Ooooh, I might have to buy the Horus Heresy set. The rulebook is a proper throwback to the 2nd or 3rd edition one I remember back in my early teens. Hundreds of pages of ridiculously detailed faux history and info!

The boy has built the wrong thing from some of his birthday kits (he wanted Necron Deathmarks but half built Immortals). Is there anything you'd recommend to break the glue down so he can start again?

Is there anything you'd recommend to break the glue down so he can start again? If he used super glue, then popping them in the freezer for a bit is usually enough to make the glue turn brittle enough to gently snap the parts apart again. If it's plastic glue (which bonds the parts together by melting the plastic) then it's going to require a very sharp hobby knife blade and some very slow, careful cutting to separate the pieces again.

Yeah, it's plastic glue. It might not be worth it and put it down to a lesson learned! He's impetuous and just ploughed ahead without checking properly. Eejit.

As said already, it will probably require a sharp knife at the least. Depending on the joint layout, it might not be possible, ie if its not flat surfaces being joined. Is he good at making the models? If he hasn't been particularly thorough, there might not be much of a join and you may be able to twist and pull the part off. Test this carefully! Also, plastic glue works both ways - it's strong, but if there is a weak joint there, putting some more on it can loosen it off. Do that, pull it off and it's a sand-job.

I've got a bunch of Necron warriors and some other bits I have little use for if you find yourself looking for some cheap models for him

Picked up the Ash Wastes box on a whim today. Now to assemble the seventy billion things in it, paint them up, and somehow find someone that won’t go “ugh, fine, if I must” at the mention of playing Necromunda.

I haven't played since the original. Think I had an Orlock gang (the baldy guys with goggles). I remember an awful lot of rules pre and post game. As in the game took less time than that stuff.

It’s better than it was, but it’s definitely not Kill Team. TBH to get the most out of Necromunda you need to get properly into the fluff. So this will probably end up as a “paint and display” thing, but I’m cool with that. The ‘munda models are awesome.

Nothing on an oldschoolsavant level, but damn good nonetheless

It doesn't feel like Necromunda if it's not surrounded by yellow and black chevrons.

They're a solid datasheet Oh yeah, he just wanted Deathmarks as they can teleport. Apparently. He's got a decent collection now - warriors, immortals, a doom Scythe and some dragon thing that cost a fortune. He hasn't played much of the game yet mind. Sure he'd appreciate more though! What have you got and we can work something out! Cheers mate.
