Just wondering if there are any lapsed players on here who have come back in with 9th edition?
I last played properly in 3rd edition, but some of the starter sets are looking kind of tempting as I like the idea of a Necron army. It looks like unless you go for the Command Edition, you're going to be faced with a £30-£40 rulebook purchase further down the line before you can get going with all the codex books and proper army building.
Any advice on the best place to start would be greatly appreciated.

@itdrebin I came back for eighth for something to do in lockdown, and the Dark Imperium box was a thing, which had the rule book and a solid start to 2 armies. GW are being shittier and made the 9th equivalent a limited run so... prepare to be scalped if you want that. Anyway, first up don't buy direct from them. Try Element Games or other indie retailers: they usually discount product by 10-20% and will order stuff in for you. Element have a few good value bundles too: elementgames.co.uk/games-workshop/warhammer-40k/starting-an-armyThe rulebook and your codex are things you have to swallow, unfortunately. Again the indies stock them a little cheaper. You can use Battlescribe (a free list building app) in lieu of your codex, but I find it a bit unwieldy for that, personally. If you stick to Crons then have a look at the Imperium magazine that I mentioned earlier in the thread, over the course of the run there will be about 2,000 points of Crons and if you're not interested in the other stuff you can buy individual issues from Forbidden Planet. Issue 4 or something comes with 3 big blender units so look at picking up a couple of copies of that for a good saving.

If you are lucky, you might be able to find the Indomitus box set in smaller stores. By all account when they ended up printing a load of extra copies some were left on shelves etc. That’s got the full main rule book plus loads of necrons. Also very eBay-able space marines.
Failing that, the magazine as mentioned is your best bet!

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'd seen adverts for the Imperium thing but didn't realise what it was. Will definitely look into a subscription to that!
Also, the indomitus tip with the independent stores is a great idea. I'm fortunate enough to have a few shops in town who could well have old stock sitting around so I'll get hunting just in case.
I'll start having a hunt around the websites you suggested in the meantime. The models have come a hell of a long way in the last 15 years.

Some issues come with mini-pots of paint as well (no primer though).

I think 40k has been a bit naff for a while now, most due to the layers of rules. That been said, I'm still buying miniatures for it. Game wise I suggest Titanicus which is awesome, kill team looks excellent and if you've got enough kit, try apocalypse.
I'll give 40k another go once some more of the codexes come out and see how many layers of rules I can cope with.

Some elements are annoying, e.g. having to try to remember 400 strategems in case you get caught out, or (at least the forst couple games) the order of combat, but 8th/9th are pretty streamlined compared to almost any edition. Vehicles, blast weapons, the psychic phase and all sorts of other stuff takes secobds to sort out, not minutes

We obviously tried 3K for our first game so that may have had something to do with it (facepalm)

1500 and 2000 (with some rather, erm, liberal use of counts-as for the 2000 point game so I could use another Maulerfiend). Games take 2 to 3 hours even with me having to look things up every 30seconds

Hmm. We have an issue of always wanting to use as much stuff as we can. Which is a problem as I've got over 15k of general imperial stuff.

Break it down into some sort of narrative: tanks this game, infantry that game, a mix, then an apoc fight of 6k points a piece
Bananas are ok for anything after 3k points right?

Started collecting a few months ago, having never dipped my toes. Went nids because I just love those biomass devouring little tykes. Still getting used to painting because I'm fucking gash at it but lots of learning by doing.
Played my first game at the weekend and still confused as fuck, but I played a mates Tau army and it was just a simple no-objective killing game. Winner was the one who had the higher point value on units killed. In a 1k point game we both killed 645 points of units... So my first game was a draw, lol. Fucks sake.
I've been gifted someones super old (like 10ish years?) Terma, Horma and Genestealers and some spore mines. Some 30+ units. Any advice on paint stripping? Is Isopropyl the best bet to go with, or is there a better solution?

Soak in Dettol overnight, scrub out the detailed bits with a toothbrush and a good soak in water overnight to get rid of the smell

Swarm army vs Gun castle seldom plays well for the former on a pure kills basis.

If anyone's after the new Kill Team, Chaos Cards have a few slightly cheaper copies with dented boxes (that will get chucked anyway if you're like me). With the monthly discount code applied too it comes to £85, which isn't a bad saving on RRP.

Yeah when I was reading through his list I was like "Hang on... you have a pure shooting army, that cannot shoot any better than some of my monster lads?". That was until his Crisis Suits dropped in and started just carving away at my HQ's. I just found it astounding to get an exact draw for my first game. The thing that cost it was missing with a Biovore, so it spawned a spore mine on the very last turn that I decided to charge with. Fucking auto overwatch bullshit. If I had NOT charged, I would have won but... hey, first time init. I never really "got" wargaming before, but now I'm invested. The painting part is too relaxing/fun to stop. Playing it is a mindfuck of numbers but I'll get the hang of it eventually.

Soak in Dettol overnight, scrub out the detailed bits with a toothbrush and a good soak in water overnight to get rid of the smell Oh simple as that? The paint is quite thick on these models, but I'll give it a go and let you know how it ends up!

That does assume that they've been painted with acrylics and not enamels.
For metal minis you can use something like Nitromors, but that stuff will wreck plastics, so better to use something pretty gentle. Takes time, but beats wrecking £50 of stuff.
No I am not speakimg from experience. I am also not taking questions at this time.

That's a pretty weak liability clause at the end ngl. I'll send you the invoice when they melt into a single horrific blob of plastic with teeth and claws.
... I mean it might be fun to fuck around with that, too.

You'll need an old toothbrush to get the worst of it off, smaller wire brush, or a pipe cleaner, for details. Was really pleased with the result.

Ohh, and the longer you soak them the better, and it's really messy work, so put plenty of newspaper down! 😊

Can confirm, left numerous eBay rescues in Dettol for a week before. Might soften edges/details a bit, but more than okay for line infantry. The paint just gloops off by that point.
