Played my first game of Kill Team today! Took 6 hours lol. We had Vespid vs Dancing Troupe... So two pretty bonkers teams to begin with I think! There are soooooo many rules. My god. I thought it was straightforward reading through the rule book, but once you get into the weeds of things like Cover/Obscured/Heavy/Light/Vantage/etc etc it really adds up. Then you chuck on specific terrain rules and a million buffs for your operatives, and wow. It's a blur of knowing if you actually did an action correctly or not. Definitely need to streamline the rules somehow, beyond just the cheat sheets I printed out. Still, we had fun, and it was always going to be a learning experience. Now to watch a bunch of videos and facepalm at all the rules we missed. It did surprise me a bit seeing what the game was actually like - I thought wrongly that it was some sort of small scale simplified gateway to 40K but I think in many ways it’s actually much more complex - by the looks of it - yet to play it of course lol.

OK, some more Romans to throw into the mix.
On a slightly larger scale, I finally finished off my dinos for my 5 Parsecs Bug Hunt campaign:

Excellent job all round, both the Roman / Dino combo and the Orks looks great.
Not sure it counts or not, but I did think about painting some minis the other night.

I’ve literally only clicked on this thread for the first time today and that dinosaur army is the coolest thing I’ve seen in years. Warhammer and Games Workshop are places I’d always look at with my nose pressed up against the window before I’d get dragged off to Sports Direct or something. More of a modelling thing, but I loved Beatties in Croydon growing up. Became an HMV and god knows what it is now.

We had a Beatties nearby, I think it was in Bury.
You can’t imagine kids doing Airfix and stuff now. I think I was a bit of an outlier because I inherited it from my dad.

One of my most precious memories is going to the Beatties in Glasgow for my 9th or 10th birthday. I got a tamiya ww2 model bonanza. A couple German bikes, figures, and an American half track. Glorious. 2 questions for KT:H 1. Should las guns and las rifles have their barrels drilled? 2. When making the kill teams, I don’t like the gunfighter pose but do love the trooper pose that uses the same ground scape. If I build out of the instructions as the trooper option, I won’t then have a gunfighter will I? Or can I take the other body and make it the gunfighter? Am confused.

Does a laser beam need a barrel though? (Of course it will look better in M2 aesthetics)

nexus6I don’t remember any specific details on the gunfighter body wise that made it unique so if you can find a way to bash two pistols on a trooper body you could still have one. Can’t help there sorry as mine are now all glued. I’ve not drilled any lasguns. The issue is that the muzzle brake/flash hider or whatever it is stops you getting a clean run at it and with such a thin barrel I’d not have the confidence to get it right. If you do, obviously that would be cooler, but these are tiiiiny models and I don’t think it’s as bad as not drilling a bolter. Personally.

I mean, I would, but only about 1 or 2 mm deep. With bolters, it needs to be done from the front and from the side, with a las-weapon just do a shallow little drill enough that the end isn't a painted on dot.

I’m honestly not trying to be a contrary Mary, but I don’t think bolters need the sides drilling, there is generally a big enough indent that your nuln oil or whatever will sell the illusion of the side ports. If I got that much into it I’d never get anything painted and would probably end up spending hours drilling dreadnought and rhino exhausts too 😂
If you’re handy with the building and hobbying side of it and are quick with it obviously it’s a cool extra.
I’m shit at drilling though, don’t like it. Considering slightly getting one of those electric pen drills.

Heh, small world rawshark , I used to go to the Croydon Beatties as a kid in the early 80s, it was the treat my mum dangled in front of me during shopping trips before getting back on the train at the East Croydon station. Happy days!

I had forgotten I have the last two Gobbo/Squig Christmas releases, that's my next project sorted!
Also been inspired by the recent Golden Demon Squig pile so thinking to try and do something similar (as I don't play, just model and paint).

Anyone with KT Starter preorders had any news on the order?
Element were showing that it would be delivered tomorrow all week, until it changed to 4-5th November earlier today. I thought it was strange because I’m sure the release date is 9th, however if I get it early I’ll certainly take the win

Is t it always two weeks for release now?
On another note, goblin gaming (I’m not paid by them don’t worry) have their Black Friday sale on. If you like imperial agents, old world khemri or custodes have a look for potential up to 35% off.

Anyway….arggggh I’m really tempted by Ordo Hereticus at that price…I really want the Immolator and then there’s two Kill Teams there…but I’ve just bought the KT starter set, need Brutal and Kunning set still AND I don’t want thirty Battle Sisters. I mean I guess I could build them as Dominions or whatever the special weapon squad is called…the mental gymnastics we will do to buy plastic eh!

Had it all in my basket including extras and thought better of it. There’s this insidious thing with Black Friday where you will spend a hundred quid to save thirty on something you had no intention of buying 😂

Played Round 2 of Kill Team tonight. Quicker, but still baffled by a lot of the rules. Some really fiddly stuff in it. Way more complicated than I ever recall Necromunda when I used to play it. Anyway, we'll get there eventually.
Vespids are absolutely shite though. Weak and hobbled by the Communion rules. Turns are an absolute nightmare to play when you've not got enough Communion points. You HAVE to target the nearest enemy unit, even if they are full concealed thus meaning you can't actually shoot at them. Nnnrgh.

Well, thanks for the heads up about Goblin Games - I've just nabbed a box of Kroot and some Army Painter effects paints - was tempted to boost my spending up to £75 to save the £3.99 shipping, but manfully resisted!
The Kroot squad will be a good addition to my 5 Parsecs games (or any of the other sci-fi rules I play for that matter) - £24 for 10 was a fairly decent price.

You just made me crumble with FOMO. Anyway the box I wanted has sold out so there’s the choice taken away thankfully! Have bought the Martian Civil War HH campaign book though as that had money off and I want to collect those.

Finally finished my Kommandos tonight - all that’s left to do is glue some magnets underneath and construct a carry case. Will take photos tomorrow as I have just literally put them away to cure.
A couple of new things - Astrogranite Texture Paint. Quite like this. I don’t think it’s as nice an effect as glueing my material stuff down, but I want a more urban rubble look for these Killteams and thought I’d just take the time savings.
Looks a bit rubbish on first application but a thick wash of Agrax and then a drybrush of Grey Seer and it actually looks the business, particularly once the rim is tidied back up after. I used the Citadel spatula thing like a full kit wanker and also used a Citadel medium dry brush, which I’ve recently acquired. I found the Citadel brush better for this than the domed type, as it can get underneath the model once it’s on its base.
Secondly I’ve done a double varnish. I’ve kinda already done this in sections before whilst doing transfers but I figured a layer of gloss would give far better protection than just the AK Ultra Matt I usually use - whilst that gives a glorious finish it isn’t brilliant against chip damage. I reckon this is the future now.
I also, as usual, am staggered by the difference a good matt (matte?) coat makes - I don’t know if it’s the way light reflects (or not) off it, the way it clears up differences in paint finishes or a combo - but I really do feel it totally uplifts them.

Yeah, urban rubble look is what I want for my teams as well. I got a pot of Vallejo White Pumice instead of Astrogranite, after doing a bit of reading. Mainly because you get a vat of the stuff. I do have Agrax and Grey Seer too. Would be interested to see how your bases come out drakey and then potentially copy

Yeah I read that. Was interesting. I still think they are a bit rubbish though haha. I'll crack open my Nemesis Claw at some point. That'll show 'em.

They also look absolutely sick! Great work.
I really like the darker, slightly bluer green on the lads' clothes too. It's nice complement to the ork skin.

I need to the paint the bits of rubble and such on my Kill Team models. I think I'll place an order for some general urban scenery colours. Tonally, I'm wanting black/dark grey/brown etc. Your middle ork in top picture is a good example drakey.
What paints/shades/tones/contracts/highlights/etc. etc. do you guys suggest are good all purpose?
Also have some skulls on the bases, so those too.

I venture out in terms of tools and soaps and other materials but I basically stick to Citadel for paints.
Rocks and rubble my shopping list would be:
Abaddon Black Eshin Grey Dawnstone Celestra Grey Grey Seer Karak Stone
Get some dry brushes that are domed or makeup brushes and work through the list until happy. I’ll generally work from Abaddon Black to Dawnstone, then do some washing and then some highlights.
Washes, basically Nuln Oil and Agrax. I’ve recently ended up with ‘new recipe’ Nuln Oil and it’s much more subtle. Agrax works better for earthy scenery or for giving rubble a dirty look.
For rocks and upturned earth I will sometimes use a brown as a base rather than black. That’d probably be Dryad Bark or Mournfang Brown.
This is assuming you are doing prominent base bits or standalone scenery. If it’s just a bit of a mound of dirt under one foot of a 32mm base model nobody will see it so don’t put too much thought into it. These are on some of the Orks above. I just painted them black, lightly dry brushed with dawn stone, chucked some Agrax on and called it a day. Bits like that will disappear from view once you do some basing. Sometimes models have more elaborate bases that are worth working on - and you can get very good results with just drybrushing.
Just remember, art not science, mistakes will be made en route, they can be painted over, trust your eye and know when you are finished.
Edit - pipes, girders etc, Basilicanum Grey contrast over leadbelcher is perfect. Just straight from the pot. That’s an essential for me.

Oh gawd. There are Layer, Air and Dry variants of Dawnstone. Similar for other paints. Guessing Layer most versatile?
