Been writing some fluff for my homebrew chapter.
¹ Glandarius is a name associated with the corvidae family of birds. I might change it, as it sounds a bit Ultramarine-y.
² Placeholder image. Imagine it looking more like that alien spine on the previous thread page, painted silver with plasma-turqoise between the links, and with a blade at the end.
³ Obviously I imagine Try'Gar looking not unlike Roger Lloyd-Pack, but with a couple of service studs.

Outriders progress
The "Green Stuff really doesn't work for me as a gap filler" stage:
The "Cutting thin plasticard into a shape but not getting the dimensions as exactly precise as they could have been" stage:
The "Filling in the edges with Vallejo plastic putty then filing it down smooth" stage:
The "Priming with black from a rattlecan and then giving it a drybrush with GSW Black Steel Pigment powder" stage:
The joins are still just barely visible, but in a much less bothersome way than that massive line down the middle that was there before. By the time it's fully painted and decaled, it'll just look like regular battle wear and tear.
There are definitely some nooks and crannies of these that would have benefitted from priming with the airbrush that I still haven't learned to use (Getting underneath the the big holsters on the right legs in particular) and it's all been lessons learned for when I come to do the next lot.
In fact, I reckon I'm going to have such difficulty painting the little headlights/targeters that are nestled between the bolters and the front wheel, I am strongly considering painting all the pieces of the next batch seperately, then gluing them together, and just using the plastic putty for the joins without bothering with the plasticard, to be filed down then painted over after the assembly.
As for the powder pigment, I think the Black Steel might be a bit on the dark side for what I was going for, but I'll be going over it a second time with a lighter metallic drybrush, and the gradient of the two colours combined should look pretty good.

My first 4 minis in order of attempts. Safe to say I'm hooked. It's extremely mindful, I completely zone out, nothing but me and a leathery Ork gusset. Not sure I have the patience for playing the actual game as my short term memory is questionable, but I'll be painting these for the foreseeable. Will finish the rest of the boyz as I saved the coolest ones for last then the Meganobz. After that I need a blood bowl team and something bigger...

Great work.
Really cool big Ork models for me are the Dakka Jet, the Trucks and Battlewagin, but in particular GHAZKULL THRAKA which I think might be the coolest 40K model.

I actually prefer the old new model. The new new model is cool, but it's too Chaos Space Mariney in shape. The old new one looks more clunky, which is better fitting for ork tech.

I do think that one is great too. I just think the current is a real show stopper. Hivestorm has been handed off to DPD - based on my last experience with that courier I’m firmly in for an Age of Strife…

Travelling Man are normally pretty good for getting these GW preorders to you on the Saturday. Think all of my previous ones have turned up on time.

Very recently had a bit of drama with a very expensive guitar. Turned up in the end but they clearly had staffing problems and used a contractor in the end. Tomorrow afternoon here looks like OK priming weather save for a few wind gusts. If it could arrive before 12 and I could hammer building the scenery that’d be great.

I take an age to cut, sand, test fit, re-sand etc to make sure no nubs. Coming from military modelling at 1/35th its so much slower! I am presuming I will only assemble the models before getting a game in with the boy. Otherwise we will be on to the next edition before they are painted!

nexus6I despise building. I’m probably really underestimating it but my hope is that there will be fewer, larger pieces to deal with. In terms of cleaning them up, my approach is cursory. I’d rather spend the time painting than obsess over tiny imperfections, get totally fed up and then have stuff sat unpainted. In fact every time I post models either here or on Reddit I’m always half expecting THOSE critic comments about mold lines etc, but people have been kind so far. I’m hoping I can at least finish the scenery and my Ork team by the end of the month and I do have a week off which will help. It’s some kind of personality failing or possibly some undiagnosed neurodivergence I dunno, but I just *couldn’t* play a game with unpainted models (on my side at least). And I do hope to actually play this game, unlike 40K. For one thing, it’s got to be quicker and easier to magnetise and carry than a full 2K army. The other thing is, it’s always been collecting and painting the toys that drew me in rather than the game. It’s just Pokémon at this point. And it’s financially crippling me 🤣

It's such a shame that they discontinued the Octarius terrain (the Orky buildings and junk piles) as that was incredibly forgiving to build and paint quickly. It also encouraged buying two boxes as you can push the four ruined buildings from one box together to make a single large complete structure, which makes for an impressive centre piece in bigger games.

The new stuff looks almost identical to the terrain I’ve still got from the original Kill Team box. Could probably make an entire city out of both of them.

The original one (if it’s the cathedral looking stuff GW painted in limestone effect) looks absolutely legendary. Like I think this stuff looks swell but that one was on another level. Just built my Kasrkin team. Have had to trim the edge off a grenade launcher because I got lazy with drilling (no pilot hole leading to boo boo) and luckily there were too so I’ve bodged it. Very cool little guys, and it’s great to see them next to Orks, Nids and Marines to just get a sense of the scale of these things against regular puny ‘oomans.

It’s inspiring to see Magicpanda start painting as I’ve wanted to for a few years now. My issue is that I don’t know if I have room for it. I have a home office but the desk is “occupied” with the PC, tv and equipment. I could move the kb&m and mouse mat to free up some desk space, and it is a large desk….
Where do you guys build and paint, do you have dedicated or shared spaces?

Space for bookshelves to store the equipment, and the desk is shared between the keyboard and mouse and the cutting mat. I try to keep everything on the mat for modelling and it works well. I use the toy storage boxes called glis from IKEA for my bits and pieces both the models and equipment. Glis does sound like a moist poo coming out though. Blue Mike or Magic Panda linked other good looking storage recently. Only issue is when the airbrush is out as it’s compressor, spray booth, cleaning kit etc and it gets crowded.

Kitchen table, where we don’t eat, we work (both WFH). If disciplined, I can keep to the size of my A3 cutting mat plus a water cup and pallette - I’m not often disciplined though and I do piss off other half with it when I spread over the table! Most lighting solutions now are USB powered and clip/vise to the table edge.
Unless you’re a pro competition or commission painter you can get away with squeezing it in. It does get messy.
Get nail polish acrylic racks for storing paint in. That can be brought in and out of a cupboard and plonked on the table. You don’t even want to know what my painting area looks like now given all this hypocrite advice though.

I’d add a little to the above - if you are spray priming don’t limit yourself to black or white. Look at the primary colour of your units - yes you will still want to put a coat over it in many cases but if you are doing Blood Angels for instance your red armour will take a lot less time and paint if you spray red to begin with.
My Tyranids are primed with wraithbone and my Ultras with Macragge Blue for instance.
Panda, when your Masters brush soap runs out, have a go with Jentastic’s Drunken Brush Goop. I use it quite wet and think it edges the Master’s.
Have a look at different painting styles too. It’s easy to think you have to limit yourself to the ‘classic’ million stage base paint/shade/8 layers of highlights thing but then you have people like Warhipster on YouTube doing amazing work with contrast paints.

Fearing the worst for tomorrow now - DPD have collected my Hivestorm, and sent it to their Birmingham hub - from Leeds - it’s being delivered to North Manchester. Tenner bet it arrives Tuesday or something 😣

It’s not been scanned since Birmingham last night.
I know what’s happened here - it’s because I’ve ordered a can of White Scar with it, as I wanted to follow the Vespid recipe I found and posted earlier. Royal Mail don’t do spray cans.
After priming a load of stuff with Grey Seer recently though it would straight up have been light enough. Silly me.

Where do you guys build and paint, do you have dedicated or shared spaces? I wfh and use my knackered old IKEA desk. My keyboard tray has an A3 cutting mat on it, I just shove my kb&m to the back of it and off I go. I have been more disciplined since moving house - previously there was a 13" gap in the chaos of paints and figures where my work laptop would live, but now I have a paint rack (nail varnish rack) on the wall next to my desk, so all my most used paints are in that rather than spread out on the desk. I'm also making better use of a couple of shelves to have hobby stuff I use near me and other stuff put away in a cupboard.
However, I have 5 years worth of stuff to accommodate - if you're just starting out most stuff can just live in a small cardboard / plastic box that you can put away somewhere when you're not in the mood. I've taken a hobby kit on UK holidays before now (Mrs Handles is one lucky gal), and you can fit a bunch of paints, a brush on primer, matt varnish, a pot lid for paint mixing, a couple of paint brushes and a few figures you want to paint into an ice cream tub with a bit of kitchen roll for protection/brush cleaning, and off you go.
There's loads of advice online about how to paint, but doing is better than watching so get some paint slapped on and enjoy yourself! It's such a relaxing hobby (apart from waiting for things to be delivered it seems), being creative and having something unique that's better than it was before you started at the end of a painting session is so rewarding. 'Better' may be doing some heavy lifting there, but a model with paint on it is always better than an unpainted and unbuilt one!
