magicpanda I’d buy one box of Ork Boyz which should leave you about 70 quid for other stuff. I’d then buy: Sprue clippers, a knife, and other bits. I posted a link to a cheap ‘Gundam modelling kit’ from Amazon a while back. That’s good and will get you all this in one box. One of those green modelling mats. Essential. Poly cement type glue. I use a Revell one with a needle applicator. An Army Painter wet pallette (you can make your own but it’s good and not too expensive). This will make your paint go further. Some mid tier brushes in various sizes (Citadel are OK, Army Painter are OK). Some drybrushes or make up brushes. Brush soap for all of the above. My favourite is the drunken gloop stuff with the unicorn on front. Lighting lighting lighting. You want LED lights in the cool white spectrum of about 5-6K. I can’t stress enough how important this is. They generally come with a clip or vice type fitting and are generally USB powered. It’s very, very hard to make out details and get a true idea of colour without this stuff for me. I have two, one strip light on an articulated arm and one that is a ring around a magnifying glass. I’d get the latter at this point and invest in more if necessary/you get more serious/into it. Watching tutorials to find a level or technique you want to attain is half of it. Don’t believe that everything you see on social media is attainable to the average person. But if you ever drew as a kid or built mechano or something you probably have some sort of transferable skill for this. Also WAAAAAAAAAGGGHHH! I would say some of these things are stage 2 buy them if you like it but you could put it off to see if you like it first. Cutting matt, I still just use old copies of Private Eye I have laying around. Wet Pallette is handy but I can't even be fucked using mine all the time and often just use a bit of tiling that I scrape off. Dry brushes only once you need em. Not sure anything in the Ork boyz kit needs drybrushing? Brush soap you can get away with fairy liquid (I managed it for decades) Lighting it dead handy but you can also get by doing it next to a window during daylight (which we will run out of soon, but if you're mostly going to do this early afternoon at the weekend just sit by a window). Thanks for the advice and help everyone, I have a unit of Ork Boyz primed black and currently drying in the conservatory and about £120 poorer, I'm going to try a little white primer from above on a couple. Holy shit you weren't joking about the light. My old git eyes failed pretty early on the evening just generally looking at them closely and putting them together. I also forgot how small everything is. My memories of doing this with Space Hulk (checks notes) 35 years?! ago were much bigger. I'm looking at the eye piece on the boss and wondering how the fuck I'm going to paint that! I've had to relook at the brushes I ordered and wondering if technical pens are the thing with this? That aside its peak mindfulness. A couple of hours were gone in a flash and that creative side of me is very happy indeed and slightly high from the various glues and paints. It's perfect timing as the Kickstarter I backed for the John Blanche minis should come good soon. He inspired me to make art in the first place! I dug out some old stuff from around that time, I remember Hive worlds blowing my tiny little mind and drew this tiny handed wastelander type, never quite finished it as I spilled coffee on the rest of it (and made the hands too tiny).

Is that space Cubby by his side?
It’s a pretty good drawing to be fair. You could edit the hands

magicpandaThis is the exact unit I got. There are dearer ones with greater magnification but I found this to be in the sweet spot of function and cost. It’ll sort two problems out for you - magnification and lighting. It casts light in a fairly ‘directional’ way so over time I’d add another light to it. I know you’ve spent a lot but I think this would get your minis painted in half the time so is a solid investment. Using the magnifier takes a bit of practice and you’ll need to adjust the viewing angle if it looks funny. It is a funny effect on the coordination between eye, brain and hand coordination but you will quickly get used to it. You’ll find over time that you use the magnifying glass less and less as it kind of trains your eyes to painting. When I first got it my minis were under the glass for the majority of the time! Also for small details, if they are raised, use that to your advantage, not much paint on the brush and feather it across using the side of the brush - it’s very similar to almost a targeted drybrush. Nice drawing - it is very redolent of that style. Edit - for an eye lens or a scope another thing you can do is just paint the entire end red or whatever colour, then paint the rim in with the edge of your brush where possible. For details you really want as little paint as possible on the brush too. Watch all the tutorials you can and pick up the bits that work for you like a sponge from more than one person. Edit - forgot the link lol. magicpanda I’ll DM you.

Brushes - a lot of really great painters swear by using a size 1 or 0 for everything - and getting good with using the tip (just the tip fnar fnar).
I say phooey to that so I have a 00 and a 000 for highlighting and details. Use the tools that work for you. Again with details and highlights, less paint than for blocking in and it can be less dilute.
The one issue with the tinier brushes is the paint dries on them quickly so you need to be cleaning as you go.
I’d also for now paint the boyz first before you paint the nob (boss). By the time you’ve done 9 boys you’ve had a fair bit of practice at getting your eye in. But remember, if you continue every unit or model you do will get incrementally better.
Pens - some people use them for certain things. I have a brown micron pen I’ve started using for scribble on scrolls and things. In general I find they bring their own issues - mine isn’t very vivid and the girth of the pen is much more than a brush, and the tip is shorter. Therefore it can be tricky to get in small spaces and see where it’s drawing.
But more tools are better than less IMO and there’s a space for everything. When I first heard of contrast paints for instance I thought it was cheating. But most good painters will use them alongside regular and other paints.
Edit - one final thought - your drawing and shading skills demonstrated in your picture give me absolute confidence that you have what it takes. That’s an eye for detail, coordination, light and shade and all the rest which are absolutely foundational, transferable skills. And yep, it’s great for the mental health/meditative effect - I generally stick music or YouTube lore vids on when I’m doing it on headphones and it’s a true escape.

Complete forgot to be online at 10am, ordered the chaos dwarves and spike from Goblin but by the time I got to GW to buy the bull centaurs and zzarg mad eye it removed the bull centaurs from the cart. Yet I’ve still got a message from the bank saying I’ve paid the full amount. No idea if the orders gone through or not.
Grrr….

In the continuing adventures of the weird design choices for the Aquilons sprue in the Hivestorm box (#PISTOLGATE), there are a couple more things to take into consideration when planning your weapon loadouts (specifically the two special weapons) as well as two important arms sharing the same pauldron. This guy briefly sums it up and provides some simple solutions: I've never watched one of his videos before, but this is some pretty good info to arm yourself with before you start building. The more you know! (#SPECIAL WEAPONSGATE; #PAULDRONGATE)

At least they added enough helmeted heads so that you don't have to use the beret heads.

magicpanda that drawing is ace! Also you're not imagining it the parts have got waaaaay fucking tinier over the years. It's a tank so it's exactly apples for apples but the Night Spinner shows it: www.warhammer.com/en-GB/shop/Eldar-Night-SpinnerFirst sprue is a new turret that's like 10 years old. The other 2 sprues are identical to the 1996 Falcon, and are basically glue the top to the bottom BOSH!

I’m gonna have to try to cast that pistol I think. I’d either do that or build with the bolt and chain but I think my other guard team will be having a chain sword and I want them different.
The pointing hand doesn’t work without a holster. And with those Dewalt style power pack magazines I don’t think you could even holster those hot shot pistols.
It is bloody annoying this. Compared to the Kommandos, you could build whatever you wanted with no problems and even with a lot of extra options not on the box art.

In other news, I've recently received my copy of Magic Realms: The Art of Fighting Fantasy from Amazon, and it's an absolute beauty of a book! unbound.com/books/magic-realmsIf this triggers some very specific memories I guarantee you'll really enjoy this

Do want. I re-got Forest of Doom recently, but despite a big search I could only get it with the new (boring) art style.

Blimey Orks are a chore to paint. So many straps and bits and accessories. Genuinely a bit gruelled.

First go at it and work in progress. Gun and Gob still need doing. Need to learn how to blend and get a lot more paint colours including a something vaguely pink!

Looks great. I love these brutish ork models. Makes me want to dig up my old Gorkamorka stuff.

Is he going to krump some ‘oomies? I'm thinking he definitely needs some MegaNobz back up.

I bought this after my old git eyes failed in the early evening. It's decently build but I have no frame of reference as its the first time I've used one, it makes small thing seem bigger and the leds are bright!

I thought it did something cool like analyzed the colors and broke them down into codes. But it turns out that's just a pic of some cardboard with squares on it. I am disappointed

I use one with 3x magnification but it attaches to the table with basically a giant bulldog clip. It has got looser over time but still holds a couple of years later. The advantage of it is that you can almost instantaneously move it for different reach/angle. I haven’t tried 10x mag but I think it might be a bit much for every single application. I’d be somewhat interested in having it as a supplement though. Mine is only 20 quid off Amazon.

I've got a set of the big daft magnifying glasses. As I found judging depth to be a problem through a single lense.

Been looking for a lamp so ordered one. Not sure about magnification - I try to avoid small details like that!

When I restarted painting in 2019 after a 30ish year hiatus I discovered my arms were no longer long enough and invested in my first ever pair of reading glasses from a rack in Boots. Then I decided to get my eyes tested properly and now 5 years later I'm spending my hobby money on new prescription lenses instead* of toys. Bah.
I have considered the magnifying lamp option but I'm happy with my LED light and glasses combo for the moment - I think batch painting and super high detail are not a great mix but now I'm beginning to understand how you chaps get such insane highlighting done (dry brush ftw here all day).
* OK, as well as, not instead of.

I’d have augmented the weak flesh and had bionic telescopes arms made instead. Glory to the Omnissiah!

What make of LED light did people go for and what's a place to buy one that's not fucking Amazon? This is the modern version of the one I've been using for the last 3 years:
There are plenty of fancier ones I'm sure, but it tilts and lights stuff up, so I'm happy.
