The issue with preorders for me is that for a non-essential purchase like this, I want the indie price because:
a) It’ll be £20+ cheaper and b) Indies always seem to offer Klarna or Clearpay which I don’t think GW directly do. This takes the sting out of the guilt because I am not sh*tting £145 away on toys in one month.
Therefore if I can source and spread payments on Saturday from an indie, I might do it. But GW are infamous at allocating small shipments to these shops and then not even honouring that - there was a right furore with The Outpost when I pre-ordered Leviathan from them. I almost didn’t get it.

I always use one of either goblin gaming or element games - never had a real problem. Does involve buying at dead on ten o’clock though.

Alternatively you could try the One Page Rules version of Necromunda (OPR Firefight Gang Wars) and save some cash to put towards buying minis. Or get both!

What the Outpost did for Leviathan was do a pre-order period of their own which you could fully secure by buying Colourforge objective markers (which wouldn’t release until the game did). These were fairly low quality laser cut MDF things. You didn’t *have to* do the Colourforge thing but they said they would knock that off the price on release, so essentially they got lots of £10 deposits. They said GW had told them that they would have enough stock to honour any projected pre-orders and I believe from memory several hundred were ‘promised’. They then got something like a third of them. Thankfully they prioritised those who had done the Colourforge thing so I did get it for £120. Many of their customers did not ultimately get to pre-order from them. Now I have seen how GW operate, I kind of view this whole episode as a bit like those eBay scalpers that do much the same thing, and I don’t really think of offering them my business anymore. I think they compounded problems by publicly speaking out at GW too as they had many further posts talking about shortages. Bite the hand that feeds and all that. Yeah I view Element, Goblin, Wayland and don’t sleep on Travelling Man as safe bets in the UK. In fact I’ve got away with several big orders from Element by making sure my other half gets the lovely blackcurrant rock boiled sweet they tend to package 🤣

If Element and Wayland run out, Mighty Lancer tend to have stock a little longer. Probably because their discount isn't quite as generous.

Hmm interesting. And what's the chatter over Kill Team pre-orders? Is it going to sell out instantly? Last game I bought was Space Hulk like 5+ years ago and that used to be a right PITA to get hold off between releases. I think the other thing that’s appealing with Kill Team is that the team is the box you buy, a bit like Bloodbowl I guess. There’s not lots of list building beyond odd loadout options I think, and it therefore gives you the opportunity to dip your hand into more than one ‘army’, which is one box of 10 models generally. These squads tend to have 40K rules too, so there’s an opportunity to use both games with the same models. To me even if I never play it appeals a bit because collecting and building teams isn’t a year plus thing like painting armies in 40K is for me, and allowing me to get some Aeldari or whatever without having to go big.

There's a Warhammer VR experience detailed in the new newsletter. There aren't any locations near me, but I'd be there in a shot I’ve noticed a new animation is out too called Tithes I think? If it’s as good as Pariah Nexus (which I finally watched recently) it could be decent.

One thing I like about Kill Team (and Blackstone Fortress) is that it's given them a lot more license to release models for the weird edge bits of 40K lore that can't justify a full army codex but fleshes it out properly and makes it more interesting. Naval troopers, a Rogue trader and their retinue or Adeptus Arbites. They might just be allies in a 40K army but it's what gives 40K some interesting fun to it. They're all also just those random John Blanche or Jess Goodwin sketches of ideas, which again is what makes 40K so much more interesting and draws you into it. It went away for a while, Rogue Trader and 2nd Ed had more of it. Actually RT seems to have entirely been that but really it's before my time. I'd genuinely like something more on the scale of 2nd ed (3-4 squads, 1 maybe 2 vehicles and a couple characters) but with more detailed rules. Rather than the drive towards 1 page rules. Basically I like detailed skirmish games and larger tactical games. Where the larger tactical ones I like (epic 40K, BFG, Warmaster, Hail Caesar, BlackPowder etc.) or for skirmish (older 40K and Bolt Action). They have less special exception rules or weird deck building mechanics for each faction. But there's a core set of detailed enough rules which don't need many exceptions baked in to make it interesting. Modern 40K falls through the cracks for me. EDIT: Also Custodes, Death Watch and Grey Knights should not be full fucking factions. They should be enjoyable weird specialist elite allies. But yknow Space marines gotta Space Marine. Or adjacent basically Space Marines with the Custodes.

Tomo, Necromunda is awesome. Treat yourself. I had the OG one and loved it as a kid. I'm still scarred/bitter to this day that when I went to uni, my mum sold ALL of our Warhammer stuff at a car boot without telling us. We had probably £2-3k of Man O War, Warhammer, 40K, Blood Bowl and Necromunda stuff. She probably sold it all for next to nothing. So there is a small part of me more interested in Kill Team because it doesn't come associated with so many scars. I could still be playing Necromunda lol

Just not my one

The new Kill Team edition will (finally) have rules for solo and co-op play which, if nothing else, will give people a chance to learn the rules and practice with their team(s) before going up against a live opponent.

LegendaryApe, I just checked out the VR thing. Forty quid for 30 minutes! Ten quid too rich for me that. Looks fun though, although sharing VR helmets - I’d want the opportunity to disinfect it myself. More for the next group than me - I’m riddled* *Or blessed maybe Danno?

Edit - as I forgot to embed the video, it’s about Vespid Stingwings. youtu.be/NDLIpP5rIs4?si=dDH1H93s6CKJepRfI don’t normally really rate GW tutorials these days, but this one is really good - just shows how you can get really good results using contrast/speed especially on more organic stuff. I think that’s ended up looking great. I possibly prefer it to the promotional Eavy Metal pics! Funnily enough I don’t love the way they’ve painted the Aquilons either and I do wonder if it contributes to people feeling a bit ‘meh’ about these new models. Was surprised there was no shading on the wings but this looks like a solid pattern to follow and build on, should I nab the set on Saturday. Looks like I’ll be ordering some new orange contrast with it! Need to find some good tutorials on scenery as the biggest thing I’ve done there is the base on my Norn.
