The Beta kicks off in a couple of days so a general thread seems like a good idea. The full game will support cross play although I might have to turn off PC matchmaking on my Series X due to the likelihood of cheating. Sorry Master Race people! Anyway hopefully this is a return to form. The chaos and freedom of a great BF game is a special experience. I’m ready to go all in!

I re-installed Battlefield 4 a couple of weeks ago and have been having a great time with it again. BF1 and V never quite scratched the same itch as 4 last did for me and I'd sort of forgotten what that felt like until I hopped back into a 64 player match and started shooting helicopters down with a tank.
2042 looks like it's going for a similar frenetic type of action, although it will no doubt be fairly buggy at launch and I worry about my PC's ability to run it at a decent framerate with any of the modern bells and / or whistles enabled.

Looking forward to the beta, I managed to get my preorder on PS5 for the wrong price when it went live so a tenner cheaper than it should be so that was nice.
Installed BF4 after the announcement and it's a shame it never got at least a PS4 Pro update as it really hasn't aged well on the looks front.

Reckon I'm on board with this.
Can I ask a dumb question. I haven't played a Battlefield game for absolutely ages. Is there any kind of mode where I can get a feel for how the vehicles control or is it just a case of trying it live and crashing 600 times?

There's usually a map you can just mess around with stuff on.

Sweet. I managed to get a helicopter airborne for all of 15 seconds last time so I could do with some practice.

I used to be pretty good with them on Bad Company 2 but haven't massively got into one since then. This is looking good though.

There’s no campaign so you can’t practice much there. Maybe Portal mode will allow you create a game where it’s just full of a helicopters. Oprah mode: “You get a chopper and you get a chopper and you get a chopper!”. It really does look like a rejuvenated BF4 which is exactly what I want. I even think the Challenge card/Specialist thing will work out. We are used to it now as nearly every online game uses one now. I can still earn a spotting ribbon for hiding on a hillside like a wuss and marking enemies with my binoculars so it’s all good.

Game pass/ea access people get this beta early right?

Game pass/ea access people get this beta early right? Open beta runs from the 8th-10th with Pre-orders and EA Play subscribers able to play from the 6th. A gamepass ultimate subscriber is an EA Play subscriber so I’m going to say yes?

I hope it's only the demo on EA play, and then the usual 10hr trial- I have ponied up for the full game despite having gamepass, since they usually went ages before new releases were added on EA play.

Beta is now available for pre-load on your respective systems. You may need to search for ‘Battlefield 2042 Open Beta’. Xbox has two versions, one is 9 gb (Xbox One) and the Series XS is 17 gb. Not playable for anyone until tomorrow when early access starts.

Adore the series, but I am worried about the major changes they've made. Namely being able to change loadouts and attachments on the fly and call in vehicle drops.
I'm sure balancing has been taken into consideration, but that seems remove the point of classes to some degree, along with capturing bases to obtain/defend access to a particular vehicle.. Both of which have always been core elements of the series.
Hyped, but also concerned they've just remade BF4 with a dollop of every other FPS from the past 5 years, rather than just improving the basics of what makes a Battlefield game great.

On the fly attachments are great, you will quickly learn to like them. You also won't use them quite as often as you might think but it's really handy to be able to remove a scope before you enter a building.

Might download an try later. I feel like every BF has been on a spectrum from shite to roughly OK ever since 2142.

Christ this is a bit buggy isn't it? Had a couple of quick games and in one I was flying in a helicopter with the pilot and other gunner hovering outside the vehicle. Sadly they have stopped the Xbox instant capture feature from working in the Beta, I wonder why...

Can anyone confirm if the ea play gamepass thingy gives access to the beta today, or only the weekend?

Only played a couple of rounds so far, but it's running surprisingly well on PC. Some stuttering here and there but no crashes or owt yet.
The biggest problem was trying to actually download the twat from Origin yesterday. The beta wouldn't appear in my library for some reason so I had to install the EA app beta, add it to my library from there, and then it worked in Origin.

The series lives and dies on the strength of its maps, and the quality of the games is usually tied to it. 3 has the worst maps of the series by far. 4 had decent maps but is spoiled by the complete lack of flow conquest has now. 1 had the same problem except it also introduced the "your team is losing, here's a train you can get into and click a map to make people die" mechanic. 5 was just a mess in general. Maps were either a chokepoint spam fest, too obviously segregated between infantry/vehicles or just had vehicles as an afterthought.
Conquest has generally felt like a complete mess since 4, because where once you could only spawn at your own team's flags or on your squad leader, it feels like you can just spawn anywhere you like, whenever you like. It just descends into these enormous zerg spamfests coupled with what feels like more and more ways to randomly die instantly with each game in the series. The last game in the series to have any kind of rhythm to it was BC2, but even that was clearly going off the rails with the Vietnam DLC.

Everyone has their first battlefield right? For me, it was 3 that got me hooked on the series. You are so right about the capture point spam and the flow that was lost since 4. For me 3 felt great, learning the maps and having the time to properly understand where and how to navigate them, 4 was an evolution of that but since then I have fallen off of these games massively. Coming back to the series now after maybe a dozen or so hours with 1 and 5 it feels like something is lacking. It's such a shame as I reinstalled 4 a few weeks back and the feeling that game had is still so great!
I will play around with this some more and hope it isn't too buggy.

I'm hoping the increase in scale will make it feel a bit less chaotic to me. I've always been pretty decent at these games, they've just completely failed to hold my interest long-term since BC2. I put hundreds of hours into 2/2142/BC2 and about 30 at most into any of them since. It just gets so tiring to play when it's this relentless clusterfuck instead of a battle that ebbs and flows.
