I replayed it a couple of months ago and although I'm heavily biased I thoroughly enjoyed it. The frame rate does get a bit gnarly at times mind you. Certain aspects were miles ahead of their time though, considering it's a good 2 and 2/3rds of a gen old.

I saw a speedrun of 4 recently and it looked like it had aged badly. Small levels, endless cutscenes interrupting gameplay even for MGS. I remember thinking the boss fights were a total letdown for a series with absolutely iconic boss fights. It felt like Kojima had put himself in a corner with all the storylines to tie up and when you can't explain shit then nanomachines. Still it at least gave us the redemption of Raiden and lead to Revengance which is still fucking brilliant.

I might just have to do a one month trial of Now and see how it is streamed. I could even go PiP on my monitor and have streamed and local RIGHT ALONGSIDE EACH OTHER like some kind of digital foundry nerd.

Heh. At the very least there's an option to install the entire game in one go now. Unlike during release when you had to watch Snake smoke a 20 deck in between chapters.

I’ve just setup my dusty old ps3 just to see how well (or poorly) MGS4 has aged. You'll need the post release patch, hopefully it's still there. Otherwise you'll be having to sit through multiple installs during the course of the game. |

I had the PSN MGS4 copy already installed from ages ago it seems, but while I was there I re-downloaded Snake Eater and Peace Walker HD, might as well do a full series run through while I'm in the mood. I do not have a mini USB to charge the dualshock 3 though. I can connect a DS4 but you randomly lose the ability to press the PS button and actually quit the game. PS Now was too janky with artifacting to bother with, although this was on the PC via wireless, maybe it'll be better on a wired PS5.

MGS4 is horrible with both the DS4 and Dualsense, so don't bother. You can stop moving completely at random with both when adjusting direction with the left stick. and the pressure sensitive controls don't work either which sucks for hold ups and grapples.

Not sure I ever finished this one. I think I finished 1,2 and 4. Did the first act of 5 and couldn’t be bothered to carry on.
I’ve got fond memories of 3 though so I’d definitely be up for playing it again.

It had been so long between plays that I'd forgotten alot of the story beats as well so was great to remind myself of the story (it's completely batshit) |

Probably my favourite one. Played it at least 3 times and watched all the cutscenes on YouTube a couple of times. Quality game, great story.
MGS5 the only one I wasn't a big fan of. Only played about a quarter of that.

I remember Metal Gear 4 as having too many cutscenes but only in the second half of the game. The first half where they let the game breath it was exceptional. I remember feeling frustrated by Metal Gear Solid 4, the balance between playing and watching skewed further and further towards watching with each successive chapter. All those internet rumours Konami were a bit uncomfortable about turned out to be true 3-4 hours of playable content.
Not good for a tentpole release of that generation especially due to the bloody install system that meant you couldn't replay sections even if you wanted.

This is turning into the world's biggest ballache to get working but I refuse to give up. My desk where I was setting this up has lovely speakers and a lovely headset, but it's all USB, and apparently the PS3 only supports chat audio through USB or BT, it's got to be HDMI, optical or phono cables for game audio. I've ordered both a USB mini cable for the DS3 and an optical cable, so now Amazon must think I'm still living in 2008 or something.
The irony is not two months ago I junked a box of old cables which probably contained both of those under the belief that they'd never be used again and I should stop hoarding.
Thrilling story, I know.

When I was living overseas and grabbed my first PS3 I only had a PC monitor to connect it to so ended up with a very jury-rigged set-up after managing to find a PS3 to DVI cable and then had to get an optical to audio cable and an inverter to use headphones to get any sound... Was much easier when it came home to a HDMI TV... As for the topic I enjoyed MGS3 Subsistence but didn't get around to finishing it. I have 4 but not really played it much. |

Yeah, I probably have enough other shite lying around that I could cobble together a solution (there’s a perfectly good hdmi soundbar around here somewhere) but I can’t be bothered rearranging everything. I could also just hook it up to the living room TV and have it all just work, but eh. Optical cable should work, and it’s one of those stupid things that’s now lodged into my brain as the One True Solution and anything else feels like giving in.

I'd prefer release order. Would be a more satisfying progression of gameplay. Story-wise, frankly GZ and 5 don't add that much - mechanically I think they're great, but the narrative, at best, feels like a pointless shoehorn of events into an already crowded timeline. |

I played MSG4 recently and I don't think it's aged as much as mentioned in here. The gameplay is pretty much like MGSV. The fan service towards the end is superb if that's your thing and worth the entry point alone. Fantastic ending.

There have been so many little retcons between the Big Boss ones and Solid Snake ones that it's not really as satisfactory as it sounds on paper. |
