There’sa fine line between being a bit silly and just being a bit shit, the Vespas went over that line, as SW has a few times in the prequels and sequels. Not so much in the originals.

One man's Arnie quip is another's deep cringe. Most 80s and 90s action movies partake in this stuff to some extent.

One man's Arnie quip is another's deep cringe. Most 80s and 90s action movies partake in this stuff to some extent. Very true. I mean, I even liked "You're luggage" from Eraser, which is an objectively terrible quip in an objectively terrible movie (obviously it's no "Let off some steam, Bennett" but some people don't even think that line is awesome!). I dunno if this is to do with teenagers or what but I particularly remember a period in like the early '90s, when a lot of kids, particularly those a bit older than me (so solidly Gen X rather than on the border with Millennial), basically denied they liked quips or any kind of silly-ness, and wanted everything to be super-serious (i.e. yes to Heat, no to Commando). I dunno if this was an age-phase thing (which happens for some people for sure) but I perceived it as a cultural difference because even as I got older it remained (at least into my late teens their early 20s), whereas I always enjoyed glorious idiocy (possibly helped by watching countless Hong Kong movies and the like at like 12-14)

Seems like a fashion thing to me, through the 90s action movies just got more straight faced to the point where people took the "philosophy" in the Matrix seriously.

Action movie one-liners are apparently called 'dad jokes' these days, which is depressing.

There was definitely a strong trend for "serious" action movies about twenty or so years ago, which was also evident in the shift from the heavyweight action stars of the 80s/90s to more "realistic-looking" action heroes in the late 90s/00s (trading out Arnie and Sly for Nic Cage, Keanu Reeves, and Will Smith).
Even sci-fi/fantasy films like Matrix and Gladiator took themselves very seriously, and there was more focus on an actor's individual choreography and fighting prowess than OTT explosions and the gunning down of nameless henchmen. I think the big, dumb, explosive actioners were relegated to DVD at this point, and in recent years their spot in cinemas has probably been taken up by the likes of the MCU.
Personally, I like a bit of both; I'm very fond of the John Wick school of well-staged, choreographed action with a lean action star, but it's nice to cut loose with silly, bombastic blow-em-up-a-thons that do not take themselves seriously.

It’s hard to get the balance between not being too serious and being ridiculous, part of it is getting any levity in the right place and the action having some sense of reality to it.

It’s illuminating how 80’s action movies are looked back upon fondly where at the time they were generally seen as fucking dire. Especially Arnie’s stuff. Outside Terminator 2 none of his films were rated highly at the time. Even Predator needed some breathing room before anyone considered thinking it a good film, let alone a bear perfect movie.

I thought this weeks was a lot better than last weeks, but I'm not as enamoured as I was with Mandalorian.
I've no problem with Temuera or his performance, and not really sure why anyone's surprised with the character portrayal as we already had far more of him as Jango than the OT Boba. I've enjoyed the flash backs and character building even if the pacing in the first few seemed a bit off.
Some design choices seem way off though. In Mandalorian I think they got the set's and new tech just right, but there's a lot less I like this time round. The aesthetic of the Vespa gang is/was terrible, both the bikes and the members outfits/modifications. They just don't look like anything Ralph McQuarrie or Joe Johnston would have come up with and they stand out as apposed to blend in.
There's also something I can't quite put my finger on with the overall look of it. I know they are using the new video walls set-thing instead of total greenscreen, but the lighting seems off. Night time just looks like it's day time with the picture darkened, and in the day things appear more spot lit than illuminated from a sun (or two). The more open shots at times look amazing, as if they really were in the middle of a desert but then at others it's hard not to see it as a set (and a small one at that). Maybe watching the behind the scenes stuff from Mandalorian makes it more obvious, but it just doesn't look right.
As a serial I am enjoying it, and looking forward to seeing where it goes in the final three, but can't deny after initial excitement I am a little underwhelmed.

I’ve really been able to notice the Volume in a number of scenes. Definitely an artifact of watching a few BTS extras.

Interesting. I haven't watched any of this stuff since watching the Behind The Scenes stuff for The Mandalorian. But in that show it I didn't notice it at all. I wonder if I'd notice it now if I went back to it?
PS/ Am I the only one who keeps forgetting that Morrisson was *Jango* in the prequels, not Boba? Doh.

Just caught up with the last 2 episodes. It remains distinctly average. I think it was simple who said that Mando was the Boba show we all wanted, and I agree. The flashbacks are plodding, although E4 was better with that. Mods on Vespas? I'd like to think it was deliberately for lols but not convinced. I did like Danny Trejo and the rancor though. But it's good to see more Star Wars regardless and watchable enough to keep me entertained.

I've been steadily growing bored of this... until today's episode.
There's a reason it's the best by far. I can't quite put my finger on it..

Yeah I watched a bit of it when I was eating my breakfast. The first 10 minutes are immeasurably better than anything that's happened in the show so far.

Great stuff best episode of the series so far and I did chuckle when the first name in the credits popped up. I imagine it's SAG rules that he had to get a credit despite not appearing in the episode.

Yeah that was good. More of that please. Just shows what we've been missing. Wife and I were humming the theme tune afterwards which is always a good sign.

Awkward when the best episode of the season is an episode of the Mandalorian. Poor old Bob isn’t even it. Seriously though, not a fan of putting significant character and plot development from one show in another. No matter how good it is. Still a great watch though.
