I know it's totally room dependent / viewing distance but I have really found my 55" (CX) to be the sweet spot. It's big but doesn't dominate the room.
Was coming from a 40" screen which was the biggest I could get in the ALCOVE of our old house.

Yeah, same here. 37" plasma to 55" felt massive initially but soon settles down. Given I am about 6ft away from it too, I don't think I could have gone to 65".

I think I'm basing my views on pre-4k, where you needed a bit of extra distance. It's probably more around how it looks in the room though really. I could probably just carry my living room tv in there actually and see what that looks like. Should have really thought of that in the first place...

Aye we have a 55", probably sat about 6ft away, big at first but soon got used to it and enjoyed it.

We've got a 55" because Mrs Hermit didn't want a massive tv taking up the entire wall and after living with it for about a week she decided that we probably could have got away with a 65".

I've taken the view that the quite significant extra dollar to go from 55" to 65" (£400 in the C1 range) would be better spent contributing to an upgraded audio set-up.
Badly want the Samsung HW-Q950A. I could go for a traditional AV receiver and upgrade the speakers over time but some of the reviews of that system make me wonder why I'd bother.

What do you lot do with your old tvs when you upgrade? I've run out of spare rooms.

Yeah the price jump from 43 to 50 isn't that much so I'm leaning towards that if its not an eye sore.

I've one in the Summer House (shed with Windows), have turned one room into an exercise room and another into a snug for the kids. Aside from that and bedrooms, the last one went into the attic in case any die on us.

I would have said 6 feet is easily far enough away for a 49inch TV!

It might not be 6 feet to be fair. I'm trying to imagine the room in my head and guessing how far away. I reckon its somewhere around there though

I went from 40" to 65" and it seemed huge for a couple of weeks. Then from 65" to 77" and that felt like an even bigger jump (it's longer diagonally than I am tall, and I'm 6'2"). But even this seems normal now, and I'll go up again to 85" whenever this gets replaced.
I sell the old ones on.

Check the distance. I was surprised to find I sit about 9' from my TV and "needed" a 65" TV ideally. I didn't get a 65" as I was too tight to pay almost double for the extra 10" over the 55". I do sometimes think that a bigger screen would have increased the "wow" factor, but I didn't want the flippin thing to dominate the room. I also didn't want to be sat in front of the thing all the time. I have no furniture in yet so that is probably the first step. Once done I will make a call. Like you, I don't really want it to dominate the room. It's not a tiny room but it's certainly not big. I feel 43 is the idea size, but I'll see if it can be pushed up to 49.... Well I just went for one of these, 65" LG OLED65B16LA 65 Inch OLED 4K Ultra HD Smart TV, which someone posted a Costco link with £400 off a couple of weeks back and finally have it wall mounted. So many thanks for that link. Looks bloody stunning, a real step up from my previous, somewhat entry level 49" LG 49UK6300PLB 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV. Like yourself I was a bit hesitant at whether to go up to a 65" from a 49" as I also only sit about 7' away from my TV. I knew I wanted to go up to at least a 55" but I really wanted something special to watch my 4K UHD Blu-rays on for that big screen experience. I'm really glad I did go up in size, as the extra size means you can really appreciate all that extra detail. My favourite YouTube vid, for checking out how good my TV looks is absolutely stunning on the 65" OLED. It looked bloody good on the previous 4K set, but on the OLED it's just jaw dropping. Viewing angles on the OLED are also really good. You can stand right at the side of it and see almost no loss in picture quality. Also it doesn't dominate the room quite as badly as I thought it might. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great big black rectangle, but it's not all encompassing. The last one was big anyway, so this is only a bit of a bigger black hole. If I was going from a 32" to this, then yeah it'd be a bit of a jarring change. The old 49" LED The new 65" OLED Next up, replace the Atmos sound bar with a proper speaker setup. But that'll have to wait until sometime next year. The sound bar is an LG SN7Y with the optional rear speakers. It's pretty reasonable and does the job, although the heights aren't great, good surround effect though. Does what I want for now and has HDMI 2.1, eArc support, Dolby Vision pass through etc. Not that I need the latter now as the new LG UBK90 I upgraded to has two HDMI outs compared to the old UBK80.

my wife cunningly had renovations and building work done so the tv fits where it is now with a tolerance of about 2cm either side so I am stuck with a 55" until I go mad and start bricking up alcoves.

TV's at 50" are better value for money on the whole as well and you don't get the best tech in the smaller TV's. I think my mate went for the 7200 Hisense which was only £399 or something from Tesco for a 50".

Enough of this screen chatter - help me decide whether my modest requirements for "better than TV sound, and occasionally brings me to tears" will be met by the Sonos Beam Gen 2!

Personally I'd want something with rear speakers, but if I was just going for a standalone soundbar, then that's probably the one I would get too.

Ive got a beam one (its in that picture, fact fans) and, yes, if I wasnt going to get rears (or wasnt so heavily in the sonos eco system), I would get a pair of powered speakers like those new q acoustics ones for 400 quid. That said, apparently the new one does better with atmos content but is still not great with stereo or even DD. Its really good with rears but on its own I reckon you could do better for the money. www.techradar.com/uk/reviews/q-acoustics-m20-hd-wireless-music-system

I've tried soundbars and I'm just too much of a sucker for that "helicopter flying behind me" moment to have one. They look a lot tidier though.

I have a 65, and I think I sit about 5.5 feet away from it. And it's perfect. It seems mad as absolute fuck on Day 1 when you first get it, but it just takes a few viewings, and you're in. There's a thingy online where you give it the size etc and it'll tell you the optimum doo dad. Must admit though, there's no way I could put this telly in the living room. Not just because there's no real optimum place to put it, but I prefer to socialise in the living room and watch films/game elsewhere. Just have a tiddly 28" in the living room with a 20 quid soundbar Horses for courses innit!

Most of the content I watch nowadays is Atmos, so while I'm not expecting cinematic level of depth from it, at least it should sound decent (like all Sonos stuff does really). I have dabbled with the notion of getting the Arc, but I don't think I'd ever get to crank it up enough to really feel the benefit. I'd just like something that clears up dialogue, and has more oomph than the built in CX55 speakers. There are options half the price, but this is Sonos, and will become my defacto music playback device, so it's not too much extra wedge for what I'd be getting. But I accept that there isn't full throated support from the thread on this device, so if my whelm is undered I'll only have myself to blame.
