My biggest issue now is that its a bit pricey compared to the 43 inches I was looking at. Plus we'd need a sound bar on top. Although at John Lewis I could get both for £1,300 which doesn't seem too bad. We'll have it for years. I think its worth it though

I went for a 48" LG CX and it's great, especially with the Series X. My only regret is paying so much for the bugger - more than the 55" CX, in fact.
I was worried about goods shortages this time last year, so I just took the plunge, but shortages seem to have affected everything but TVs, so you can even get the newer LG C1 model for pennies at the moment... pennies I tells ya!
The CX has served me very well during lockdown though.

There's your excuse to get the 55" Rob - it's cheaper!

Yeah, they are wank. I bought my mother-in-law one (or similar) for christmas because her old one died. 42", 4K and while its fine for a pensioners living room, they it looked like shit compared to even the 1080p hisense set I have upstairs, even playing some 4K netflix. I think JVC is literally just Currys own brand tesco value range now. Funnily enough there's a 1080 HiSense in my lads room that rarely gets used, think I might swap them over.

My father-in-law has just bought a 55" 4K Hisense - fingers crossed it does the job.

Hopefully I really wish I had the room for something bigger than 48" but it'd look ridiculous in my living room. If space wasn't an issue I'd be buying this 65" LG C1 from Richer Sounds right now; It'd look glorious. I had the option of putting a bigger one on the wall above the fireplace, but it'd have ruined the room. Do you have a period property finished with period features / decor? If not, just whack the biggest you can afford on the wall.

Yeah I'm pushing it with a 48" I think. The room itself isn't tiny, and I'd be about 6' away if it is wall mounted. But the TV is at one end of the room and the rest of the room will be used as an office / kids playroom. It's only a single garage conversion so I can't go too crazy unfortunately!

Conversation with the mrs didn’t go great. Started with a flat “no it’s far too big”, then “just do what you want”. Now I’ve been around long enough to know that means “don’t you dare do what you want”. We’ve agreed that we’ll move our 49” in there at weekend to see if it is indeed an “eyesore”. Just got to slowly bring her round Then tell her the price.

I'd just get a bloody big telly, Mrs Mercury was pretty similar minded but honestly, as others have said, you soon get used to it and so did she.

It's true. My wife absolutely hated our 55". She hasn't yet admitted that we could have gone to 65" but has definitely said she couldn't have gone smaller. How often will your wife be in there Rob? Sounded like it'll be a games room for you and TV room for the kids - give it a year or two and she'll never be in there!

It’s difficult to say how much she’ll use it. It’s a new room that isn’t finished yet. I’ll certainly be using it as an office when wfh, and we’ve put a downstairs toilet in there so people will walk through to use that. Going to stick a load of the kids toys in there to get them out of the living room and was going to move the PS and Switch in there too. I see it as if there is football on I’ll just go watch it in there or in the evening if the mrs is watching something I’m not interested in I’ll go in the other room on the console or something. She may see it differently though! I don’t really want to take it over as if it’s my room as it’s not, but I also don’t want to regret going too small on the tv as it’s very important

My wife has spent the last decade tells Ng m that she offered me a 50" plasma instead of the 42" I got and that I insisted on the 42. Usually when she is playing a console game with a teeny font. We had just moved from a pretty massive house with a big living room to a much smaller house so I think I underestimated the space we had. Therefore, even though I think a 65" is possibly a bit big I may try and get one of those rather than a 55"... Deals are changing pretty rapidly at the moment though.

Has anyone ever truly regretted getting a big TV? Similarly, has anyone ever actually gotten divorced over it? If the answer to both is "no", job done

Its one of those things. I bought my OLED because my old LED died rather than choosing to upgrade. At the time 65 were way over my budget but I reckon I would have gone for a 65" in 18 months/2 years time if it hadnt karked it because prices had come down. My last one was a 50", so 55" wasnt a massive jump.
But, yeah, just buy it and stick on 4K blue planet. Thats what everyone does to head off 'its too big'.

This is the thing. It's a fairly big investment so I don't usually 'upgrade' my tv without really good reason (i.e. its broken). So I want to make sure I'm covered for current gen gaming at least.
I think I probably will overrule and take the stick in the short term. She'll come around eventually I'm sure.

My wife has been saying to wait until the current telly dies. The old plasma is still going strong at nearly 12years old... Edit - time to persuade her that the plasma could make a nice bedroom 'cinema' option...

I've read the plasmas start omitting poisonous gases after 12 years. I mean.... yeah? In terms of your carbon footprint youre much, much better off with an OLED. Youre not upgrading for yourself. Youre doing it for the planet. And is the planet not worth saving? Its your moral imperative to get a new telly.

Has anyone ever truly regretted getting a big TV? Similarly, has anyone ever actually gotten divorced over it? I went 42 → 55 → 65 → 77. Never regretted a single upgrade. With each upgrade, the TVs got slimmer and had smaller bezels, which helped. For the last upgrade, the GF had to give her approval. To get that, I had to get the super-slim GX instead of the CX and wallmount it, which I didn't mind, and replace the 5.1 bookshelf speaker system wih a Sonos Arc + surrounds, which I did mind at first, but now I love it. It sounds great, looks great, barely any cables, barely any boxes. Also, she's no stranger to things with many inches, nudge nudge

I think its worth it though I just bought the 48 C1, upgrading from a 40 inch Sony 1080p from 2008. Would have liked to go bigger but it’s the largest i can fit in the alcove between the fireplace and the wall. Nevertheless, the difference is amazing. Had some worries about how reflective the glossy screen would be and burn in, but all doubts evaporated once it was set up. I went with John Lewis for the guarantee and burn in cover. It’s pricey once you chuck in a sound-bar, but I won’t replace it for years. And once you’ve got Blue Planet 2 of A Perfect Planet on you’ll be too busy picking your jaw off the ground to think about the money.

Or come home drunk and "accidentally" knock it over/run into it with a beer bottle. "I wouldn't be out drinking so often if I had a bigger TV!" Two arguments, one stone.
