I'd actually call RE4 the DS2 of the series... Which means it's great. DS2 is a great game.

Zero is fine more or less but it feels like had to make a game for the gamecube and didn't have any brand new ideas. I will play zero over RE5 and 6 anyday

Opinion on Zero's quality don't change the fact it's the last real Resident Evil game.
Everything else after that is basically on the level of a spin-off like Operation Raccoon City.
P.S. Dark Souls 2 is trash. I found a copy I'd forgotten about in a box of PS3 games. Let's take a look... Oh. Oh dear. Not only is the design kind of meh it looks really bad. Well, maybe that's the PS3's fault. So I crack the seal on a copy of Dark Souls trilogy that also got back-logged.
Next gen Dark Souls 2! Oh... Oh dear... It still looks kind of bad. Which only goes to prove, resolution and frame rate don't count for much if your game is ugly to start with. How can this look worse than the original Demon's Souls? Yet it does. It's like a botched ROM-Hack of the original Dark Souls.

RE4 is by far the best RE, it’s absolutely amazing and still plays like a dream now. It’s more action oriented than the others but it’s not an all out action game
It’s incredibly good

RE Remake is the second best and comfortably the best if you prefer less action
RE2R is the next best

I actually think RE6 is the best Resident Evil. Heh, I don't think I can keep this up much longer but it's so funny 🤣

Why the hell is Dark Souls 2 being dragged into this? I'll fight you ALL. Apart from Jambo.

Resident Evil games are better than Dark Souls games. I read that in the Bible. It’s an undeniable fact.

I like RE4 more than RE6, but that’s the only mainline entry I’d put it above. Excluding the Operation Raccoon City or Gun Survivor spin offs and what have you.

I think we need to call this the Resident Evil and terrible opinions thread.

I've never known anyone prefer 5 over 4 - be interesting to hear your reasoning why, and not so I can get you in some sort of "gotcha!" either.
Co-op maybe?

Not a gotcha. I hated 4, and never understood why 5 gets the hate it does from people who consider 4 the GOAT, not even just of RE titles but of games in general. 5 is basically 4 but improved. The movement is less stiff, the story is weirder and you get fun co-op on top. If “this is Resident Evil now,” it took the framework and added to it.
RE6 on the other hand just went stupid and is absolutely indefensible. They wanted to be all things. RE5, COD, Uncharted.

I quite like 5 too and don't understand the hate it gets - I was just surprised that someone who didn't like 4 quite liked 5 when they're very similar games.
To be fair I've just realised I'm guilty of the same as I adore RE1 and REmake but don't really have much affection for RE2 or the remake of it.

"The story is weirder"?
Are Spanish villagers infected by a parasite led by an evil cult called the Illuminati in leagues with a small Spanish Castillo wearing a white wig in regal clothes living in a castle with an underground lave out, filled with black robed monks, trebuchets with flaming boulders, insect humanoid bodyguards, a lake monster and a crazed guy with a chainsaw called Dr.Salvador not weird enough for you?!
I don't like the co-op aspect of 5 if you're playing alone, how the enemies you face, especially bosses, are not designed for your inability to move so come across as cheap. I mean yeah you punch a boulder but that's just meme territory by now.

They conquered quantum mechanics though - things placed in an item box in one location are instantly available in all locations.
And the merchant in RE4 is fairly realistic

Lol. Plus you escape an island that has a self destruct setting on a fucking jetski and you can do tricks on it. Resi 4 is INCREDIBLY weird.

I absolutely love Resi 5, completed it I believe eight or nine times.
What I would stress though is I've never played it solo. It is an absolutely marvellous co-op game and for me personally, I'd rate in the same league as Halo 3 and Gears for co-op.
To stress again - this is my personal, terrible opinion though. I am aware a lot of people hate it.

I really enjoyed RE5 too, hope there’s a remake and a couch co-op option on modern consoles would be even better.

Bloody loved RE5 but also played it to death co-op. Found the combat immensely satisfying, but it's an admittedly terrible Resident Evil game.

As much as I've been joking around, 4 was the limit for me. I enjoyed it, but the progression towards a more linear action oriented game took it away from the things I loved about the series. I played through 5 with my brother, and we enjoyed it, but it was even further from the core series.
I love 1-3 original and remakes. They'll always be the true REs to me.
I haven't even played 6 🤣

Yeah I love RE5 too. I’ve completed it easily 30+ times and all except one were in single player mode
It’s a genuinely fantastic game

RE5 is annoying single player experience, the AI is dumb as rocks. The thing is there is better co-op shooters than RE5, also they added more QTE and button bashing as they thought thats what people loved from 4.
Dead space 3 was better co-op shooter than 5 but I really didn't want from the game as was plenty of those games on those console

The series is a convoluted mess really.
Personally I rate the trilogy of numbered Racoon City centred games as what is my Resi. But then I know that CV was the game developed as the ‘real’ RE3 and it was just a contractual issue that gave the Jill spin-off title the main sequence number instead.
And I wasn’t super into the move away from survival horror even though I think RE4 is really good and that the series needed to evolve. Although luckily someone had the foresight to realise that the first attempt at RE4 had gone too far and pushed it out the door renamed Devil May Cry.
Although now we’ve got the RE Engine games, I think them and the REmake are all I would call essential to play these days. All of them are very satisfying to play.

With the RE 3 Remake originally planned as DLC for the RE2 Remake, imagine if Capcom had the gall to have remade Code Veronica afterwards and call that RE 3 Remake.
Admittedly, it would have been a little confusing re-writing history like that, but it wouldn’t have been much worse than when the Americans had to deal with the Final Fantasy games jumping from 3 to 7 in a few short years.
