Playing on Standard mode myself after my experience of starting RE8 on Hardcore mode. The section of the werewolves attacking you in the village was totally miserable.

Uh, boss in chapter 6 is a bit shit on hardcore, especially if you go into the fight empty-handed. At least fill up my health if I die and get back to the checkpoint, come on. Was too frustrating last night, so I started another playthrough in standard, which almost feels like a different game. I finished the first 3 chapters in one sitting and died once. Bit shitty that you can't drop the difficulty on the fly, I'd like to keep playing on hardcore, but not with the bosses I know still await me. I'm not isure if t's considered on the fly, but on the You Died screen, there's an option right there to select a dpad button to change difficulty. That's how I dropped it.

Does that work going from hardcore to standard? Tip on the difficulty select screen didn't mention it for hardcore IIRC but does for standard.

I'm not sure - I dropped to assisted from standard, so you'd have to check I guess

Yeah, unfortunately, that only works in standard mode, not in hardcore. The game even warns you about it, to be fair, but it's still a bit silly. But thanks anyway.

Yeah that is a bit silly isn't it. Not sure why they did that. You'd have thought it'd work on all levels, but there you go I guess.

I kick ass at RE4 and the remake is brutal on the mode it recommended. Really all it comes down to is there isn’t enough ammo. I would also know, on a replay, not to waste my first $30,000 or so upgrading the ammo capacity of guns (in the mistake belief it would give me full ammo clips) when upgrading damage first would have saved more ammo.
In the original I don’t spend a penny on upgrades (expect on the TMP) until I get to The Castle.

Finished this yesterday and while I think it could have cut the whole island section and it would have probably been a better game, it's still so fucking good. I'd forgotten basically everything so felt like I was playing it through for the first time. Will definitely do an NG+ run.
Think all my favourite games this gen are remakes.

It's probably because you get obsessed with headshotting everything, and a controller is never going to be super accurate for that. I'm using mouse & keyboard. Controls just feel clunky and unresponsive to me. Shame cos otherwise the game is good.

You can't follow the general template of the game then cut the island out. Strongly disagree.

I've managed to cobble together enough funds to buy myself a 'break glass in case of emergency' rocket launcher.
This is definitely more punishing than the original. Fuck knows what that hardcore mode it recommends is like, it's bad enough on standard.

Trouble is it's god-mode by the final 2 chapters so lacks all the tension and then there aren't many of the set pieces so lacks the excitement of the first two sections never knowing what crazy fucking shit they've got waiting around the corner. The first two areas are outstanding and rammed full of insane moments, but 1 very creepy enemy and a paper-mache helicopter are the two standouts for me from the final few chapters where generally what's round the next corner is more meat to grind through and my least favourite two bosses. It's not bad. Combat's far too good for any of it to be bad. Just think it's a bit flabby towards the end.

I'm on the island and it's far from god mode for me, it's still very much a challenge which I appreciate.

God mode? Christ, I must be at the lofty heights of a Neophyte believer then, because I was getting my arse kicked before I dropped the difficulty. Still not straightforward on assisted tbh!

I can’t understand people who don’t like the island. I’ve not reached it in the remake, but I LOVE the island. The only part of that original game that’s deflating is the final battle, but even that I don’t mind, because it’s easy and I’m ready for the game to be over.

The first part of the island is definitely hard, but agreed that the last couple of chapters just feel like you're mowing through shit in comparison. I only saw one death screen in between the penultimate and final boss, and that was because I ran straight through a section that was clearly meant to be stealthy.

Made it to the island. Looks.... intimidating.
Rocket launchers are still a 1HK on bosses for what it's worth. Not that I had to resort to such tactics of course.

I'm on the island and it's far from god mode for me, it's still very much a challenge which I appreciate. I guess this still has the dynamic difficulty from the original, right? If people play well enough, after a while there probably wouldn't be that much difference between Standard and Hardcore. RE2 remake was more or less like that. I got lots of headshots and saved tons of ammo and healing items. By the time I got to the sewers, zombies would take several headshots just to drop down, and one bite would immediately bring me from full green to orange health.

I dunno but I'm probably 1/3 through the island and I'm always at the cusp of no ammo, and I've been using the Blacktail mostly apart from having to use the shotgun to blast the legs of a certain enemy so I can get away. The sound it makes is still disturbing, it was definitely ramped up here in terms of dread.

I will add that I love all parts of Resi 4 but yes the Village has always been my favourite because of how it's more creepy from how mundane the location is l, whereas the castle and island are more more fantastical and video gamey if that makes sense.

I thought the castle in this was a lot less hokey than the original. I thoroughly enjoyed it, apart from a couple of choice rooms that made me panic more than I care to let on.

Oh for real the OG castle was extremely hokey, here they seemed to have setpieces and enemy introductions placed more intelligently and in a way that makes sense. I know the original quite well and it's amazing how they've used familiar locations and completely changed what you expect you from them. It's almost as if they made it from the perspective of someone who played it obsessively just so the person can't go on the internet and say "IT'S THE SAME GAME".

Yeah I've been side eyeing rooms with familiar-but-not setups throughout the game and it's perfect how they've managed to subvert expectations throughout in such a fresh way.
Really can't say enough good about this. The island is mixing it up nicely now as well, although once I load it up next time I'm sure the guys I'm about to run into will have me cursing it.

I just did the room in the castle with the two Garradors and a healthy number of those infected monks . Eessh, I died twice there but scraped through it the third time, minus a fair few health items, ammo and two smaller broken knives. Luckily I had previously got an 'Epic' rated Ashley Graham charm from the merchant shooting range prize machine after depositing 3 gold tokens , which increases green herb health recovery by 50%! So a single green herb is practically as good as having a green-red combo now, very handy!
