Looks like its the original rather than DC but with qol changes like the door animations and not needing ink ribbons (both characters needed them on ps1) Director’s Cut is on the PSN store but I’ve always thought its a poorer experience than the original.

Yeah, I've had a few posts in my Google feed saying how fans shouldn't miss it and it's really good. Where did you hear that, Jambo? Some people on YT. 🤷🏾

Hmm well I bought the trilogy anyway, as I really want to replay 2&3.
Quaddys enthusiasm has made me want to play the original though! 😅

I recall using a PSX emulator on my PC as a kid to be able to play them - with hooky CD versions of them

Hmm well I bought the trilogy anyway, as I really want to replay 2&3. Quaddys enthusiasm has made me want to play the original though! 😅 Honestly, give it a go! You don't have to faff with ink ribbons, it's fast as fuck, and you can skip all the doors. It's like the benny Hill version, it's ace! And all the puzzles are the original. So the puzzle room where you normally select the different coloured lights has changed back to the crows and the ordering puzzle of infant to old man etc. If you're like me, and played the remake a million times you forget the og rooms which gives it more tension in places. AND the music is ace!

Just played it through in one sitting!
Absolutely fantastic! It's a lot trimmer game than the remake, I'd forgotten how tight it all is.
Thought it visually holds up really well too, it actually looks more gritty. Really atmospheric and the music is great! It's still so spooky. You are right about thr rooms, the remake has ruined my memory! 😅
I'm pretty sure there was more to the FMV too, pretty sure alot of that was cut in the UK version at release. It also has the dressing room off the main hall, which I think was a directors cut addition?
I did it all in 3hr20 in 15 saves, but I think I could have done it in single digits (I was being really cautious 😅)
Really glad I listened to you! Was transported back to the mid 90s for a magical afternoon. Now I really can't wait for 2 & 3 which was the real reason I rebought!

On the off chance that I'm *not* the only person here who's interested - which, let's face it, I probably am! - physical PS5 versions of RE2, 3, and 7 are due out next month.
In anticipation of this, I've just bought RE4.
Yay!

Are there any particular must-buy items to get from the merchant when you first encounter him?
I was tempted by the crossbow thing for ranged stealth takedowns, but there's also a rifle (with a free bonus scope), and my inventory space is limited!

I wouldn't bother with the crossbow. Get the rifle

Can the crossbow one-shot enemies? If not, it'll be much less useful as a ranged stealth tool.

The bolt thrower? It’s absolutely wank
Get it as a novelty thing on subsequent playthroughs. I’m an idiot as I bought it on my first game

Yeah it's absolute guff. Stealth is viable but you do practically all of it with the knife and for only a bit of the beginning area but once you get into the game proper stealth doesn't really become viable again until the beginning of the 3rd act.

Explodey bolts were kind of decent IIRC, but yeah it just ended up stashed for me.

I just concentrated on upgrading a pistol, a shotgun and a rifle then swapping them out for superior models later in the game. Kept things fairly spartan but it helped with inventory space and meant I had one tool for each job when it came to regular enemies.

Thanks, chaps.
Good call re the rifle - it came in most handy in the area right after the merchant.
Am I the only one who seems subconsciously hell-bent on hitting *every* bear trap on the map? It's like that Simpsons scene with Sideshow Bob and the rakes.

If you've played the OG resi 4 the weapon ruleset still remains, Blacktail or Red 9 pistol, Striker Shotgun, Rifle is upto you regarding bolt rifle or auto version and Broken Butterfly everytime just for the reload but it's not as cool as the OG version and tbf the Killer 7 is better just from being semi auto. The SMG and the bolt thrower are kind of your choice but not worth it IMO. And whenever you can briefcase size should always be the priority upgrade.

Never played the OG. Never played any Resi game, in fact!
I've got the rifle and the upgraded pistol so far. Is it worth hanging onto my original pistol, or should I sell/store it now I have a better one?

Never played a resi game?!
/has a stroke
Anyway...keep the OG pistol and upgrade it and sell when you either find the Red 9 or when the merchant offers you a Blacktail. Punisher isn't really worth it for what the upgrade path is. Oh and keep the knife upgrade as much as possible more specifically in durability terms as in can parry EVERYTHING.

Cheers, Jambo.
I've already upgraded the knife's durability, and I've got one power upgrade for it as well. I do like my parries!

Nee worries. Arrows, fists, blades, parries everything. Like all good games with parries there are late parties, normal parries and perfect parries. Perfect parries reduce the durability cost to almost 0.
