I'd agree to a degree, but Doom 3 is not scary in the slightest, but it does share the same atmosphere as Dead Space. I think Resi and Dead Space do different things but they do it well. I think the Resi 2 remake was sublime, I did it find it more stressful than scary tbh especially when it came to Mr X. Dead Space does still shit me up though to a point apart from the near end where it becomes fatiguing as the game throws the kitchen sink at you.

Its a shame they didn’t include distinct interconnected story content for the A and B scenarios like the PS1 version but RE2 remake probably is the best game in the series for me. Its just such a good distillation of everything and it looks so good too.

Played the demo tonight and I'm impressed by how bad the aiming is. Hope the reviews mean they've done something to make it less bad.

Given the aiming in RE4 is deliberately awkward, I’m wondering at the debates that went on in the remake’s development about how fucked-up to make it, given enemies are much faster and seem tougher.

Apparently it's all twin stick action, with extra mobility thrown in to give it a 2023 update

I'm going further and further over to the purist camp. Once you start revising things in the name of 'improvement' and appealing to 'modern audiences' you are basically Bowdlerising the original. Turrican features some of the most unfair leap of faith jumps ever put into a game, but if you correct that you necessitate a cascade of changes that eventually dissolve the essence of the original.
The Wii version of Resident Evil 4 already was a problem, there is supposed to be a certain degree of difficulty in aiming, head shots are not supposed to be easy. Resident Evil 4 is on a Gamecube with a Gamecube controller. Every other port was a variation which was inferior to greater or lesser degree.
Changing art direction is just as bad, people put incredible effort in, years later somebody comes along and just erases that with their new version of how they think things should have really been. It's incredibly disrespectful.

Until we started to have standardised controls, 3D games were mostly a load of shit to control. There's nothing disrespectful about retrofitting decent controls to older games (Metroid Prime remastered being a prime example) RE4 was fine at the time as we didn't know any different, but it really isn't pleasant to play now.
Remakes and remasters don't stop the original games from existing, anyway. Nothing stopping you from just playing that instead if you want.

Well they don't just erase it because the OG version will still exist. The whole thing is a terrible hot take.

I actually like RE4's control scheme - it's a bit unwieldy at first but it fits the game perfectly and becomes second nature once you get used to it. Ditto for Metroid Prime's original control schemes.
Good to have some unique control schemes now and again - be a bit boring if every game was left stick move, right stick aim.

I’m definitely in the I Miss Bespoke Controls camp. I was a dead shot master at RE4 on GameCube by the end of it. With the quick turns you can absolutely get to a point where it feels elegant. The standardised controls in their games make everything feel like a reskinned That Genre game, unless they have some really special story or something, like Bioshock.

This is why I'm so keen on remappable controls! The more devs who're all, "We're like Burger King, dudes and dudettes - have it YOUR way!", the better.

I’m a fan of standardised controls but they need to be fully customisable too. The worst is when its default or two alternative fixed mappings that are completely incomprehensible when all you actually want is to switch one or two functions around.

Been playing this for a couple of hours today on Xbox (via NZ trick), it's very, very good.
Controls are still rogered though.

Do you get used to it? I'm torn on getting it. Love these remakes and RE in general at the moment, but it really did feel like controlling a bipedal turd.

Sort of, I'm getting by. It's annoying but I'm still enjoying the game. It's only really headshots (or lack thereof) that are frustrating me.

For some reason I am stupidly excited about this being delivered tomorrow. Like, as in a kid at Christmas excited!

It's like the second coming, as far as I'm concerned.
The test is, can I finish the final 3rd of Wo Long before I break the digital seal on this sucker.

I have so little to play at the moment that I might grab this just to keep me going until Jedi Survivor comes out.

Are the controls just buggered for xbox? Or is it a problem for all platforms?

Are the controls just buggered for xbox? Or is it a problem for all platforms? Just Xbox, or Xbox pads more specifically, apparently even the PC version is afflicted if you use an Xbox pad. Otherwise all other versions and control schemes are fine.

I'm with him. I didn't mind it one bit on Xbox. Weird how it apparently is an issue with the controller.

I've just checked my friends list and wunty fucking owns this game after slagging it off! Erm. No I don’t. I downloaded the demo when it came out and played it for about five minutes. I will get it at some point, I know that much, but when it’s on sale.
