The fact there's no QTE's is a bit of news to me. Makes you wonder what happens with things like the laser hallway or the Krauser boss fight. . Do they just rework those sections into something else? Or are they cut completely? Gonna be interesting

Apparently they're adding a few sidequests to the remake - hunt down a specific enemy, solving a puzzle etc. The game was already big enough, not sure why these are needed. Indeed. In fact - and I know RE4 is loved - I would actually rather they cut shit out of it rather than added more in. The whole island can fuck off, essentially. I don't mind the castle mind you but even that dragged on too long.

I tried to play one of the other remakes of it and found it to be quite shit.

Surprised you say that considering Dead Space is pretty much RE4 in space.

Trouble is though, Dead Space started as an action horror title. RE4 followed from RE games that didn't play out the same way. It's the one that put Capcom down the "roundhouse linear action merchant upgrade-fest" route that they were to messily soil themselves with on RE5 and completely shit up the walls with RE6.
Can't say I'm as excited about this one as I'd hoped to be but it's releasing around my birthday so I'm definitely nudging it towards the wife's direction and whispering the name of it into her ear, making sure to duck when she turns round. I do think it will be bloody good overall.

I'm hoping it's closer to the RE2 remake than the RE3 one.
In all honesty I don't think RE4 even needs a remake - the original still plays really well once you get reacquainted with the aiming (or play the Wii version) and it still has all the campy charm you remember.
Final third could definitely do with a trim though as you say.

I'm just after the pretty graphics if I'm honest.

Can't wait to see what they do with the Regenerators.
Hope they don't mess with the sound too much - chanting of the cult members in the castle, breathing of the regenerators etc. are all still really effective.

Is it just me or is that a bit of a backwards step?

In knife manufacture, certainly.

That sounds utterly shit. I've presumably posted in the game mechanics you hate thread, but any kind of gear deterioration never adds to my enjoyment of a game.

It will totally be to try and apologise for stuff they cut out. I personally love every inch of RE4 and wouldn’t cut a thing, but this new game is clearly a top to bottom reimagining. I’m expecting a hell of a lot to be missing.

I don’t like the item durability mechanic either; just feels a cheap way to add tension. Having said that, it worked ok in RE2, and there was a way to unlock an infinite knife, so 🤷♀️

The knife thing is pants and stupid.
I am however looking forward to the castle using a combat shotgun to blow the shit out of the robed bellends

Yes they're adding side quests, in return for ripping out swathes of the original game, most likely.

Yes they're adding side quests, in return for ripping out swathes of the original game, most likely. By side quest, we mean, travel back through areas you’ve cleared to find a thingy, so we get better value out of areas we’ve built. RE4 was good at reusing areas in the village, but didn’t happen much in the castle or island.

Didn't Village have something similar to side quests or am I imagining that?
Plus you see new enemy with a bull head and hammer. I see a base model they can adapt as the Executioner enemy type in the RE5 Remake.

The Dead Space Remake has side quests too, I'm not sure why side quests are now automatically the worst thing ever going by the responses here.

Yeah, I thought Capcom had gained quite a bit of good will with their recent output (especially RE). Surprised by the negativity

Because they're usually just filler that distract from the main, curated story. Some games do a great job with their sidequests but I'd say they're boring/inconsequential more often than not in most games.

I mean no one's played the game yet and most likely they're optionally like Village so it doesn't have to detract from the story if you don't want it, like pretty much all side quests in every game.

I was just speaking about sidequests in general from personal experience.
Yeah you can skip them normally but you can end up missing out on valuable xp, weapons, equipment etc. that can effect your 'main' quest to varying degrees.
I'm playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3 at the moment and if I didn't do any sidequests I wouldn't be able to continue the main game due to being woefully underpowered; Evil Within 2 had various sidequsts which were pretty much fetch quests but gave plenty of xp and gear - I wanted the latter to get more enjoyment out of the main story but resented having to do the former to ge tthem.
Just wish there was a better way to earn/unlock things in games outside of kill/fetch/find 'x' - Witcher 3 and Disco Elysium do a pretty good job here. Divinity 2 nailed sidequests too.

I doubt RE4's side quests are going to on a level with JRPGs, which are repetitive chore fests anyway. It'll probably be more shooting medallions, mini bosses or something like that. They might even be fun

Fun? This is videogames we are talking about. Judging by the twitter and reddit feeds for a few games I've been looking at recently, I can assure noone sees these damn things as fun. You're out of your mind.

Considering the devs are promoting the fact that you can do a knife only run through of this game, I doubt the side quests are gonna be on the same level of necessity as a JRPG like Xenoblade.

Knife only run but only if Leon has a hundred knives.

Agreed - I did posit Evil Within 2 and its sidequests as something a bit more similar to Resident Evil though!
