I know, right? Takes me 10 tries to get through a 30 minute movie on there.

Tell you what. I had 30 mins on RE8 this morning and managed to do the entire House Beneviento part. Second time through and from the added safety of 3rd person and it's still a stunningly effective section. The fear was tempered by the fact I knew what was going to unfold in there, but it's still a masterful piece of game design. A small yet stunningly detailed and atmospheric location, the steady increase in tension as you retread the same hallways and rooms to solve the puzzles, the sightings and unnerving audio cues. Then that moment, and all you can do is run like fuck in the other direction. At no point was it anywhere near me apart from the bedroom after grabbing the fuses but bloody hell, the sound that it makes. That house - both in the main game and the DLC - is up there containing my favourite horror sequencies in any game ever. I also just realised that, during the Rose DLC it's even creepier now, knowing that the wooden statues that fucking follow you are actually of Rose's mother - Mia. Had completely forgotten

It needs to be done man. Don't play anything else until you've done it. It's not a massive section and first time through will take you an hour at the very most. It is, however, one of the finest hours in horror gaming ever. It's PT levels of good.

So I'm not to play Evil Dead then? Or Ragnorok? And instead force myself to shit my pants?
Got it.

So I'm not to play Evil Dead then? Or Ragnorok? And instead force myself to shit my pants? Got it. Trust me. When you play it, there will be no forcing required. Ultimate sphincter relaxation.
But yes. Seeing as how we've not managed a game of ED yet anyway! Besides, it'll take an hour tops. One hour to get to brown down your trousers town.

See, my reaction to it was to just run to the cloest cupboard where I knew I was safe, so I didn't find it particularly scary, just a bit disturbing. If you know anything of first person non-combat horror games, you'll see it coming a mile off. I think it's well presented but nothing special from a design point of view

I think that section is most effective before anything happens and you’re just building dread silently. The monster coming is obviously a fright of its own but its more a panic than tense so my gaming brain was kicking in.
That they can recontextualise it in the DLC to deliver something even more effective using very similar tricks is very impressive to me. Especially as Resident Evil has never really been that sort of series.

Pretty much. While it's well done, I don't see it as being much more than a gimmick section that follows the current trend of hiding in cupboards from unkillable enemies in indie horror games, but with a AAA budget. The atmosphere during the build up is very good and the best bit. The level itself is just a corridoor that goes in a circle and as far as I could tell, the monster despawns after you hide. So from a game design perspective, I'm just not that fussed about it
To be honest, I think people talking it up so much and saying 'omg it's the scariest thing ever' dulled the experience quite a bit. I'm sure it's better if you don't know it's coming

Joking aside, I do see your point about hyping it up, and I'm guilty of it myself. I just recall playing that section about two days after the game came out. I had no idea what to expect and I just remember filling my fucking pants. I'm not saying it's original, or not a gimmick, just that the whole house is a great experience on the whole. It doesn't have to be original to be good.

Somehow I'd almost completely forgotten the Moreau fight. Don't think I was too enamoured during my first playthrough but quite enjoyed it this time. Mind you it helped that it felt less like a battle of attrition because my weapons were more upgraded and I had more ammo. I like the platformy puzzley bit beforehand as well, another change of pace.
Also found a couple of treasure locations that I missed first time, and Ethan has now eaten all his meals. Good boy Ethan.

As I always say, that Moreau fight feels like it should have a follow-up part where he ambushes you in a new form for the real boss battle later in the chapter.

I think the fight follow up is the actual fight though. The water walk puzzle section is effectively part one of the fight.

I guess but it still feels very anti-climatic, especially with it just being a bullet sponge without any real gimmicks

Sure, it’s a lame boss fight for sure. From memory they’re all pretty shit though. The best one is House Burrito by virtue of it not having a fight at all.

The Lady D boss fight was pretty cool. I think the castle was my favourite area, then the factory, Moreau and Beneviento, which is the shittest part of a game I have played

Yup. Also, diamonds represent diamonds, hearts represent hearts, and clubs represent piles.
