Objectively, 7 is probably better, just not a fan of the setting/tone for RE and can't stand the Saw films. I'd rather play through 5, which I don't think is a bad game at all
wunty I don't know how people can rate things with a score, it's so meaningless

I'm trying to rank them all but it's tough. Take RE1 for instance. You've got that, and you've got the remake. Do I rank them separately? RE1 back in the day was absolutely amazing but is incredibly dated visually and mechanically. The remake improves on the visuals and the movement mechanics, but if I were to play each for the first time now, I wouldn't think they were all that. I think I've got to rank them all in terms of how I found them at the time, so I'm essentially ranking the first time playthrough experience as much as the game, if that makes sense.
RE 1 (it was the first game I played that felt like a true horror experience - creepy mansion, zombies, giant spiders!) RE 2 RE CV RE 7 RE 8 REmake RE 2 Remake RE 3 Remake RE Revelations RE 4 RE 3 RE 0 RE Revelations 2 RE 5 RE 6

Mine was how I'd rate them now and REmake 1 and 2 pretty much replace the originals for me. Hopefully that will also be the case for REmake 4 as well
Is CV that good? I thought it was suppose to be a bit shit. Proper 3D innit?

I’d probably bundle RE1 and Remake together but I’d list Directors Cut separately because I think its less enjoyable than RE1 to enough of a degree that it deserves its own place on the list.
I think RE2 and its Remake are totally different experiences too so would count them apart - although in that case both are great.

I don’t like Code Veronica very much.
My case would be: - the plot is the first really silly nonsense one - the locations are a bit second rate - its really ugly and bare looking with the move to full 3D losing the richness and atmosphere of the pre-rendered backdrop games - Steve Burnside
I do think its a slightly forgotten game though. Considering it was originally intended as the true RE3 before Sony’s lawyers came knocking Capcom have barely done more than upload the file to successive generation’s online stores. I don’t even its ever even had an HD polish.

Don't think I've played the original. How are they different?

DC contains the original and the Director’s Cut games so you could have played the original that way.
They basically moved around a bunch of puzzles, changed how Chris and Jill look - no beret or bullet proof vest - fiddled with how effective some of the weapons were, switched about different enemies, and I think some rooms are reframed onto new fixed camera angles. But none of it feels necessary or right. The original was so well balanced and it basically undoes a lot of that. I get the impression it only exists because RE2 wasn’t ready yet.
For the sections it lifts directly I don’t think REmake keeps any of the changes.

I thought Code Veronica was great. Definitely better than 3, IMO. 3 Remake probably beats it now though, but it was special at the time.
Steve is super obnoxious though. The Romeo + Juliet era Leo DiCaprio clone.

I think I’d go
RE1/REmake RE2/RE2make RE7 RE8 RE3make RE4 RE3 Rev 1 Rev 2 RE CV RE DC RE5 RE6
The top two are probably only that way because of nostalgia since I was a day 1 purchaser of the original and have probably played it start-finish more than any other game. If I’m really honest I’m not sure I could really separate them though. 7 and 8 could probably swap too depending on my mood that morning.

I have a big fondness for CV as I loved my Dreamcast and it was quite an amazing RE experience. Full 3d, dynamic lighting. The works. It just felt like one of those “wow” games at the time.

I must confess for all the dunking I do on CV for being early-ish full 3D I do remember thinking Fade To Black was the pinnacle of graphic not long before RE1 first came out and you basically play as a cardboard box in that

I played through CV in the summer and in all honesty I still think it looks not too bad. Of it's time, sure, but it's aged well.

Not played CV since the PS2 days, I did have a Dreamcast but I don’t think I’ve ever played that version
Series as a whole I love them all with the exception of number 6, which I absolutely hated

Code Veronica looks much better than that. Not everything on the Dreamcast looked incredible, but CV, Shenmue, Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2 were really ahead of their time.

simple - that somehow looks better than I remember it. Even at the time it came out if felt like a fugly game.

It was one of those games that I played a lot of imagining it was something else. The controls were tank controls on a d-pad too so moving was pretty tough.

I think I hated every minute of RE5 but I did finish it. I couldn’t get past the early chainsaw-fight-in-a-tiny-room in RE7 and gave up. Frustrated the shit out of me.
Coming back to it post-being-murdered, found the gameplay even more frustrating and the wifey-knifey sequence way too much. My hands are damaged from having a knife through them, and so I’m struggling with this deliberately-sluggish-controls gameplay of having a knife through your virtual hands (Ethan’s hands get fucked up A LOT) and it’s just, I don’t need this.
Village was great through. A mere biting of the hands. Never sickeningly tense.
It’s annoying though because I’d LIKE to see the rest of RE7.

Oh I LOVED RE5, it’s close to being my favourite one as it’s comfortably the most “fun” Resident Evil ever. It’s quite the romp
RE7 gets easier the more you play through it, once you’re past that chainsaw fight it’s an absolute doddle

Hmmm. Yeah man I can honestly see how that part would be a bit much for you ☹️
Fire through it on easy so you can get past that bit quick and see the rest of the game at least? It’s honestly very good indeed. A few low points but like Village it really mixes things up constantly.

Village was almost a tour of every type of Resi game. Although, and I know I’ve said it before on here and at the old place, the lake side felt like it was seriously missing some content. Like there should’ve been fishmen instead of werewolves and the bit where Chris appears, that seemed like such a hard cut from where you could reach on the water to where the cutscene started that it just felt like there had to be more too it. Even the boss fight felt like the first encounter/stage one in a classic multiple evolution/location Resi boss fight. But you just shot him a bit and that was it. 7’s opening is intense the frustrating but once things open up a bit its enjoyable. Admittedly you could easily release it without RE branding and it wouldn’t lose anything but that’s also part of the appeal.

Yeah the water section felt like reduced ambitions all over the place, but I also recall village was not initially intended as a numbered release but some kind of side project that got boosted when they realised how fucking good it was.

Started a new playthrough of the main game in 3rd person. Very early doors yet but I'm not feeling it. Think I much prefer the original 1st person view. Feels more immediate. I'll run through it all though, just to see what it's like.

Yes. Need to get some ED on the go.
Did you never finish Village? How far did you get?
I noticed earlier there's a trophy for finishing it in 3 hours. That's nuts.
