How's third person in the main game?

I thought it was pretty good, but I only played it in the demo (the castle) .
You can tell its a first person game with a 3rd person camera though, it's different to the Re2/3makes

I laughed when I found out you still can't see Ethan's face in 3rd person mode.

Just finished that area last night. Crikey. It wasn't constantly scary - the latter half was more quirky and good fun than pant wetting - but that first segment, the one that called to mind the original game... Blimey. Worth the price of admission alone.
Don't think I have too far to go. I'll probably be around 4 - 5 hours once done, but I am VERY slow. Have to say, it's very good indeed. It's better than the DLC for RE7 (well, I liked Chris' one, which is maybe on a par, but the punching man's one can fuck off for ever), and even though there's no new locales everything is nicely mixed up and - let's face it - the areas are so cool anyway you don't mind revisiting them.

Just completed re3 again for the umpteenth time last night.
Checked my overall playtime and I've played it for just over 50 hours! That's not bad for a game you can finish in 2!! 😅

Finished the Rose DLC last night. My total time was apparently 3 hrs 47 mins. So yeah, that's me plodding through it, so it IS short.
It's a tough one to recommend. On one hand, it has no new areas and has a really short running time. On the other, it complaints one of the scariest gaming moments outside the base game and a few other titles, meaning just to experience that section, I genuinely think it was worth it. plus even familiar and short Resident Evil these days is still brilliant Resident Evil, and I really did love it. Besides. With gaming time at a premium, I'd always rather short but high quality content.

Strange as it sounds, as much as I love the series I don't really like scary games. I don't really find the core games that scary, more atmospheric.
The switch to 1st person was where it turned me off, but to be fair, re5 did that a long time ago... 😆

I'd never assocaited Resident Evil with scary until RE7 came out. That game made me shit myself multiple times. Village then delivered a fucking masterful horrendous sequence. Thankfully the whole game wasn't like that. The DLC is essentially the mix of styles that the main game offers but condensed down. I must confess to being a real fan of the direction they are taking the series. Some shooty bits, some puzzly bits, some narrative bits, some scary bits, some chase bits etc. All the while in a finely crafted locale that oozes atmosphere and is rich with detail.

I think they’ve only really been scary since the move to the RE Engine - 7, 2 and 8 all have their moments - but the REmake certainly added a lot of atmosphere to the original series.
One thing I think all the good Resi games do is naturally build your confidence as you become familiar with the environments. I know reviewers of games in general like a whinge about backtracking but in RE its more about discovery and I don’t think any other series captures that in quite the same way or as well. It also means they can wrongfoot you by recontextualising the space as well which is a lovely touch - and something Shadow of Rose really benefits from.

Like returning to the mansion in RE1 only to find hunters and giant fucking spiders all over the place.

I thought Village made a basic scariness error right at the start by not giving you a weapon right away. The walk from the car crash to wherever you first get a gun wasn’t scary to me at all because I knew nothing could happen to me. They should have had Ethan find a handgun or even a knife in the wreck and I guarantee more people would have been jumping at shadows.

RE has always been more about causing anxiety over resource management (even though you always end up with tons of stuff left over at the end and a magnum you might as well use on the final boss) and the jump scares
I still think they have their moments though
The REmake mansion is still the best location in the series. Unlocking different areas, learning your way around, working out the fastest routes/routes to avoid zombies, etc is a huge part of the appeal. The REmake 2 police station comes a close second

Yeah. Despite what I said earlier, if they did a re-remake of the original, and decided on 1st person, I would play that again.

How free are we to talk about the scary bit of the dlc without ruining it for everyone now?
I was speaking to a friend about it earlier and I’ve convinced myself that its a) genius and b) one of the most scary and tense sections I’ve played in a long time/ever

It's amazing isn't it. Properly freaked me the fuck out. If they just did a "Weeping Angel" and appeared closer after you looked away, that would be bad enough, but the fact that you hear them clomping around and can still catch them moving is even worse somehow. It's when you go into a room and just wait for the clomping to near a door, then one or more of them peer around it. It's fucking nightmare fuel.

I know other titles have done it before but to get some many different scares across one environment between the base game and dlc really speaks to how well they know what they’re doing right now. Agree that its the noise and catching their final frames of movement that keep things really on edge. The way they move too.
I can imagine it being very manageable if you know whats coming and use the map intelligently but first time in. Terrifying. And it breaks the unwritten ‘no weapon, no danger’ rule the series broadly adheres to.
The Little Nightmares section that followed was a real shift. Very happy that that wasn’t insta-fail stealth like Sherry’s section in the RE2 remake.

Apparently RE0 just turned 20. Plotwise with the opera singing and slugs and second even more secreter hidden mansion + laboratory it definitely falls on the silly side of Resi. The inventory management was a bit of a failed experiment. Billy Coen couldn’t be a more early-00s protagonist. But I still feel like its a solid enough game in its moment-to-moment action. Its got a very comic book spin-off feel but its ultimately a game I enjoy more than I find fault with. http://instagram.com/p/Ck3egrIuLwS

I remember liking RE0 but the inventory management really puts me off playing it again. Going into it not knowing, I just got on with it but with foreknowledge of it, can't really be arsed Isn't one of the plus game unlocks Wesker with laser eyes or something ? Also something I've been wondering recently, what happens between the time in RE1 when they enter the mansion and the game starts that causes Chris and Jill to get separated?

Yeah. That sums up my feeling as well. You get this great mix up in current RE games. Bit of stalking and hiding, bit of action, bit of outright terror etc. I love what they are doing right now.
Ha yeah, the bit where you're tiny was very unexpected! Another tonal shift, but I really enjoyed it. It could have been frustrating but it wasn't.

As for RE0. I actually only played that for the first time ever earlier this year. I actually owned it for the gamecube originally after buying it when it came out. Never got around to it back then and ever since, all the talk of shitty inventory management etc had put me off.
Turns out all that stuff - whilst irritating - wasn't anywhere near as bad as I feared. Ended up playing through the whole thing and really liking it. It's no RE1, 2 or even CV, but it's a solid entry that tries a couple of new things.
