There was also the slightly jarring juxtaposition between the Drs 'no guns. guns is bad' policy and genociding the sontarans after allowing them to genocide the cybermen and the daleks.

So what did everyone think of the finale? I'm of two minds. There was a lot I liked in this series as a whole - the best of Chibnall's run I'd say - but the relentless plot-plot-plot of it all, and the endless exposition, began to drag the more it went on. So I dunno, overall it's okay? It was all a bit wtf in the end. I loved the ambition of these episodes and Doctor Who has never looked better. Apart from that I thought Chibnall just tried to throw absolutely everything at the wall and see what stuck. It was a bloated, tonally inconsistent, incoherent and illogical mess most of the time with moments of utter brilliance. My main takeaways: The the angels are still one of the best baddies ever The sontarans the worst. Kevin McNally was great John Bishop was shit. The Divison was wasted. None of it made any sense. Still don't know what anyone was trying to do, especially the Grand Serpent.
I want more space dog.

Although seeing as how the Doctor was happy to wipe out three races at once in the end. I do kind of get The Division attempting to get shot of her.

Like I say, if the previous episodes hadnt been packed with slightly irrelevant bullshit, that resolution would possibly have been longer and stronger than 30 seconds of CGI explosions.

What I did really like is how finally Chibnall seems to have found a voice for Whitakker's Doctor. In the past I often felt something was a bit off, either dialogue or performance, especially when she had to do the fast-talking Doctor-explains-it-all scenes. But in this whole series she was really, really funny and light, and all the technobabble was well done (by Who standards). We still don't get any of the delightful descriptions or impossible references that RTD and Moffat excelled at, but it was the most Who-ish this era of Who has been.
I especially loved the lanyard joke in this ep.

I enjoyed it but it left me a bit confused about who was doing what and why at the close. Presumably they'll have to roll back the destruction of most of the universe at some point too. I hope the ending isn't just an excuse to let the next series forget about all the timeless child stuff and just go back to being a regular Timelord again. It felt a bit Armin Tamzarian.

There’s got to be a way to do a Doctor Who epic without it being a convoluted knot of stuff. Look at when David Tennant fought Davros that was relatively straight forward Doctor-Donna notwithstanding

I feel like these epic finales always have a tendency to get a bit wibbly. Like when everyone wished for the Doctor after the Master had turned him into Dobby the House Elf. Or whatever happened when the Pandorica opened. This suffered worse than most I think coz there were just so many balls in the air. Fair play to Chibs for managing to give everyone some kind of resolution I guess.
Incidentally I've just come back from my daughter's drama club performance and one girl did the Capaldi monologue from the Zygon two-parter; the whole "this is a scale model of war" speech. Reminded me how good those Doctor moral high-horse moments could be.

I think this probably was the best epic finale type story since that Davros one.
There was that big exposition lore dump about the Division which was pretty dumb but I think it was probably fine because unlike the tangled mess previous stories of this type have ended up in the lore didn’t really make a difference. The action hung together entertainingly whether you were fully clued up or not.

Quite excited to see who the monster is for the next special in the spring.
I’ve really liked that Whittaker’s run has seen baddies like the Cybermen, Sontarans and now these returning to the looks they had in the 70s rather than the modern updates they were given by RTD etc

Front page of Daily Mirror claiming that the next Doctor will be a woman after seeing future script.
They seem oblivious to the fact that all Doctor Who scripts are written with the present incumbent in mind and then tweaked when they come to filming. Just like James Bond scripts and other franchises.

What's the deal with the new episode of Dr Who that popped up a day or two ago? Is it a one off special? I kinda assumed the Flux ones were going to be Whittaker's last ones.

There are three specials this year. That was one of them, Whitaker's last one is the third one which will be broadcast towards the end of the year.

Oh, they're doing something a bit like tennant's last run of specials? Sweet.
If anyone watched it, was is it standalone, or do I need to catch up on Flux first?

I think they’ve got a run of standalone episodes across the year.
The standard they set with Flux has been kept up so I’m guess they were all part of the same production run.

They refer to something the Doctor did during Flux which would constitute a spoiler, if I thought the story was good enough to even be spoil-able.

I think its probably best to just enjoy the ride than get bogged down in lore. I say it tediously often but its a balance the Matt Smith years in particular were guilty of getting wrong.

I'm not so worried about Spoilers for Dr Who, more about whether it'll be necessary to know what's going on.
I'm gonna get around to the rest of Flux sometime, but it was a bit over-complex for my kids to follow. If we can jump straight into some standalone specials, that would be more digestible for them.

There’s a brief mention of something that happened toward the end of Flux in this first special but you’d miss it if you aren’t paying full attention and the plot of the episode itself stands entirely on its own no prior knowledge required

Latest rumour doing the rounds is that Tennant is returning to replace Whittaker. I mentioned it to Mrs Hermit who thinks that Tennant is the best Doctor there has ever been or will be and she said "Did I wish really hard?"
We both reckon its bollocks though.

It's going to be Danny Dyer. He's already announced he's leaving Eastenders.

Tennant is the best modern Doctor but I don’t think he should come back outside of team-up specials

He’s tied up on Good Omens until March, then he’s filming a second series of Around the World in 80 Days. He’s got other stuff on top of that, so if he did come back there wouldn’t be any Who until late 2023/24

60th anniversary special is 2023 isn't it, with the full series in 2024? I imagine if there's any truth whatsoever to Tennant's involvement it'll be as part of another multi-Doc-team-up in the anniversary.

One more shitty Chibnall episode to go and I'm sure he's going to completely fuck it up.
I've really no idea what was going on through most of that Sea Devils episode, a lot of it just seemed so random.
