Those goblins would be quite scary for little kids methinks. Proper disturbing.

Very gremlins. But my little one, who usually nopes out of Doctor Who because it's too scary, thought they were funny rather than scary. I was hoping the Christmas Special would be in the 'fun adventure' rather than 'everyone has turned into scary zombies' ballpark, and it was. I wouldn't say it was amazing, but then the xmas specials never really are as they're kinda their own thing, but it was good fun and the new doctor seems good. Though he loses a few points for going back and stopping that tree accident.

I liked it. Even more, is the fact that RTD seems to be in maximum “I’m going to do it anyway” mode regarding trying new things.

I spent half of it wondering why Davina McCall was less orange. I just realised that I thought her and Claudia Winkleman were the same person. *shrug*

I’m still trapped waiting to watch the Tennant Toymaker episode because my wife decided she wanted to watch the specials with me and hasn’t been ready to finish them in all the weeks since it aired
This is the same reason all our streaming services are littered with series we either only got two episodes into or only have one episode left of

I wanted to watch the Tennant ones, but have skipped them for now as I just didn't have time.
I dunno how the new doc is introduced at the end of the Toymaker one, but the Xmas special seems to be basically a fresh start, so it'd be ok to watch it first.

I think this was my favourite bit of Christmas TV this year. I wasn't too sure about his introduction in the Tennant special but I absolutely loved the new Doctor in this.

The introduction (and consequent resolution) in the Tennant episode wasn't handled to my liking, but I very much loved this new version of the Doctor in his initial episode. I daresay he might be the sexiest Doctor we've ever had and I'm saying that as a 59 year old CIS gender heterosexual male with 3 grown kids.

Anyone had any issues watching Dr Who via a Fire TV device? I'm getting an initially fine image suddenly jumping into a scaled image with a green band underneath it. The image that's behind that jitters whilst the main content still plays in the reduced size window. Then it jumps back to normal for a bit before going back to this... Seems OK if the video quality is changed down to standard though. Wondering if it's due to it being a UHD-labelled vid? Using a Firestick 4K but on a 1080p telly.

No, but I'm not using anything particularly HD. I think it's a 4k firestick (not 100% sure without checking), but it's only a regular HD telly.
Have you tried turning the firestick off at the socket, then turning it on again? Seems to fix most issues with it.

It's been restarted several times whilst I've been turning various settings on/off to see if any of those might be the culprit but I haven't actually turned the power off.
At one point I thought turning off the 'Match Original Frame Rate' option sorted it, but it didn't. It only seems to happen in iPlayer with their UHD content which I guess is being offered as the Firestick is a 4K one, even though it's only attached to a Full HD TV.

All caught up now The Toymaker was my least favourite of the Tennant specials and I don’t think this send off for Tennant was as impactful as his original goodbye. But I don’t think it was meant to be, I feel like those three episodes were RTD saying goodbye to the original revival and then saying a proper hello to Disney with the Christmas special. The Xmas episodes are always their own thing but this was a fun one and they’re obviously putting every penny onto the screen. The gremlins were a fun Christmas baddie too. The new Doctor has really hit the ground running and it already feels like a very fresh take on things and to have the balls to put that musical number in and get away with it. I can’t see any other Doctor pulling that off. It could easily have been the Jabba’s palace song. For the upcoming season I’m assuming Anita Dobson at Xmas and the tooth in Toymaker means we’ll see a return of Missy/The Master. Although if they’re digging back to the Toymaker character and a comic book story - it would be fun if the Monk turns up along the way. Either way I think RTD is going to have a lot of fun and freedom this time around.

Watched this Christmas episode last night and enjoyed it enough. Christmas Who always feels a bit detached from everything else and always seems to be made with the consideration that a lot of people will be watching it who will only watch this one episode of Who all year and it will probably mostly just be on for background noise. This episode is no exception to that.
It was a nice introduction to the characters though and it did a fairly good job of rebooting the whole thing. But, I would say this was my least favourite of the specials. My focus switched off a bit following the escape from the ship and didn't really get fully engaged again. I also personally got strong Jabba's palace vibes from the musical number (or, more appropriately, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey's Goblin King song vibes).
Really, really enjoyed the edge of the universe and the Toymaker episodes. I liked the arrival of the Doctor in the latter of those, although I would agree that Tennant's ending was perhaps a little twee.

Not long now. I see they're calling it "Season 1" rather than "Series 40" so our new Disney overlords don't think they're missing out on anything.

They’re going to be really pissed if they find out that they’re 875 episodes behind.

They’ve also done that shitty American thing of including the Christmas Special as part of the main series even though it’s not actually part of the block

DVD probably.
Decades of BBC shows. Nope.
It’s becoming obvious that Disney own everything in this relationship.

On iPlayer, the series up to now have included the Christmas special as part of each series block.
I think that's how they've always done it? I don't think it's a new development with the "Whoniverse".
In fact - and I haven't double checked - I think this is how iPlayer does it in general, because I'm sure Ghosts lumped the Christmas specials in with each series.

Ep 1 - Space Babies
Absolutely, completely, all over the place fucking mad. Just utter batshit mental.
I don't think I've ever seen anything that has vacillated so wildly between moments of inspired brilliance and childish bullshit.
Running down corridors: Check

Ep 2 - The Devil's Chord
Bette Midler invades the 1960s and steals the music from some people claiming to be The Beatles despite looking absolutely nothing like them.
I will tell you right now, there were at least three minutes toward the end of this that I skipped over.
Alright, who the hell are The Oldest One and The One Who Waits?
Running down corridors: Check
Side note: Between six and seven months have apparently passed for Ruby between episode 1 and 2 and presumably they've been having adventures that whole time?

They can present it however they want on iPlayer. I’m talking what actually happens. The BBC’s content system has all the Christmas specials as separate entities, because they are. See link for previous series www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006q2x0/episodes/guideNews series Christmas is lumped into the series www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0gglvqn/episodes/guide

Mrs Hermit enjoyed the first episode a lot. She thinks Ncuti is a sexy bastard. Utterly ridiculous and good fun. Reeks of Davies. Will give the second episode a shot later.
Season 1 still irks me.

Rather enjoyed both episodes, not entirely sure how the resolution of the second episode sorts it all out I assume Harbinger popping up meant that everything that Maestro did since 1925 got erased from the timeline. Doubt if it's the last we've seen of the kid. One thing I'm very pleased about with "season 1" is that the audio mixing seems to have been tweaked so you can fucking hear the dialogue without struggling, at the start of the first episode it wasn't immediately obvious as the music was pretty much dominating the opening but that wasn't an issue later in both episodes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the second episode. However, I would prefer to imagine that it concluded slightly earlier than it actually did. Nope, no twists thank you.
