I always thought Talented Mr Ripley was a rom-com. Maybe I should have paid more attention to the trailers.

It's kind of a rom com, just without much comedy or romance. Does have jude law tho.

First episode of new Race Across the World. Brilliant as ever. All contestants seem likable.

Shōgun. Brilliant. The best series I've watched since Better Call Saul. (Disney +).

SPYxFAMILY season 1 part 2 blu-ray turned up yesterday, it's been 6 months since I watched part 1 so I started from the beginning again. I love this show so much, just the right mix of silly and serious. The English dub is fantastic as well

It's much better, much less contrived.

I only see Hunted on Gogglebox but there was a bit on last night’s where a guy was laying low in some grass* but the hunter’s spotted him from the roadside because there was clearly the silhouette of a camera man on the hill top. I’m assuming they have to pretend they can’t see the camera crew but its a pretty big giveaway if you’re trying to lay low with Dave Chapman’s boom mic hanging overhead. * The Town Moor in Newcastle

Yeah, a lot of the tension in Hunted is artificially generated in the cutting room, like when they endlessly jump as the hunters approach a location... but the shadows show it's a completely different time of day. I'll get onto Race too, thanks.

First episode of new Race Across the World. Brilliant as ever. All contestants seem likable. This was fun, watching from Japan with the Japanese missus. Some terrible attempts at speaking Japanese
I learned a few things about places around the country too, although a couple of things were a bit misleading. Like when the teen duo got the idea that crying is a sign of strength in Japan, when it's definitely not. It's just a unique thing to that baby/sumo festival.
Was surprised about the winners, as I thought they'd taken the most nuts route.
Lol'd at them getting chased out of the shrine that they weren't sure if they could enter, as I've done the same thing.
Personally, I eat while walking all the time. But I think that's just me not giving a crap about the whole 'being rude' thing in that case. Not usually a bowl of noodles while running though

I'll get onto Race too, thanks. I met a guy who had been on it once who told me that indeed the whole thing is staged (which isn't a surprise really given that they're doing things which would not be legal except if they were state actors with judicial clearance).

a couple of things were a bit misleading. Like when the teen duo got the idea that crying is a sign of strength in Japan, when it's definitely not. Can you elaborate? Because I was also under the impression that crying is a standard piece of public theatre in Japan, 'the done thing' in certain circumstances. For example, when I've been in negotiations with the Japanese, their chief negotiator will have a bit of a public cry in front of his colleagues before making a major concession. Which freaks the European negotiators the fuck out I might add.

For example, when I've been in negotiations with the Japanese, their chief negotiator will have a bit of a public cry in front of his colleagues before making a major concession. Which freaks the European negotiators the fuck out I might add. Not really. Maybe there's something I don't know about, but I've never encountered that. Never been in high stakes negotiations though.
I've never seen a Japanese person cry in real life, other than when they had to do one of those massive public apologies because they took drugs or something.
It wasn't intentionally misleading, more that the 2 lads extrapolated something that isn't really there about crying being seen as a sign of strength because the winning baby is the one that cries.
I haven't researched it, so I might be equally wrong, but I was under the impression it was more that the loud cries were a sign that the baby was healthy, and were supposed to scare away the demons with their volume.
It's like a lot of UK traditions though, where the origins don't make a lot of direct sense, but you can see how the superstition might have originally arisen.

Shogun finale next week should be really good. Can anticipate what's coming, but should be a pretty satisfying conclusion. Anna Sawai should be winning awards for her performances.
It is interesting to see wider discussion of the show as "better than Game of Thrones". It's pretty outlandish to make that comparison of a limited series with one season to GoT with 8 seasons to begin with. Plus Shoguns politics are more...simple? There are really only 2 sides moving against each other compared to like 5. GoT in it's first 4 seasons was landmark television, still nothing like it, I guess it's interesting seeing the perception now is that the final season was so bad that it's coloured how people view that show overall.

I haven't read the book so I have no idea whether there's any scope for further seasons, it's listed as 's1' on Disney+ but I guess that means nothing. I think in terms of atmospherics and scripting and pacing and look and feel I can absolutely see why it's being compared to GOT, and favourably at that. You're right that GOT has suffered in hindsight because of the shocking last two seasons. But I don't think it's an unreasonable comparison to make.

Started Baby Reindeer. Christ that was an excruciating 30 mins. Proper uncomfortable viewing. Excellent performances but not sure I can stay the course.

The Bear, series 2. Hell this is good. Just watched the flashback episode to about 5 years prior. Beautifully fleshed out some back story and built to an explosive ending. Definitely one of the best episodes of television I've watched.

Rebel Moon on netflix. The first one.
It's a bit shit innit? I decided to wait until the 2nd one came out and then binge it. Kind of wish I'd waited longer now.

It really is a load of pish. Snyder is planning 6 of them too, as if we haven't suffered enough slowmo...
Couldn't even bring myself to finish the first one.

My netflix account shows I made it 10 minutes in to the second one, but mentally I'd checked out somewhere in the first.
It's just so....unengaging. Snyder is great at eye candy, but he can't create interesting characters for shit, and has no concept of what makes a good story. I neither hated they baddies or cared especially for the good guys. It's Sucker Punch with a Star Wars re-skin mod.

Yep started Baby Reindeer too.
God it’s excruciatingly uncomfortable. And also really fucking good.
It’s probably more Black Mirror than the last series of Black Mirror.
