A few months ago we had our pavements dug up & fibre installed, however no sign of it actually going live. Does anyone know how long it typically takes from the infrastructure being installed until it is switched on & can be run to your house; there is a junction box at the pavement so I guess we will have to pay to get it run to the house when it is up & running Annoyingly the copper cable comes to the back of the house from a pole, but the fibre is coming from the front Depends who the network operator was and who its ISPs are. And if the rest of the network is sorted. There might be a connection fee but it's usually minimal or waived. They want people to take it up (it's what their business model is based on after all). My guess is that it's CityFibre, G Network or Community Fibre in your area. I'm hoping that the infrastructure is sorted around our way soonish as I am due to have my TV/Internet renewal by October. I will give BT their props, after the initial teething issues of getting set up, they have been rock solid for reliability.

Aye, I went with BT as they were the only one I could get 900Mb from for some reason when fibre launched here. Have been absolutely rock solid for the past year and a bit. Although I'm using my own router.
Hopefully whoever I switch to next year isn't dreadful, as I just can't justify spending £64 a month on internet (with another bump coming in April) I'll probably end up going for the 500Mb package too. Sad times.

Our Sky fibre contract is ending soon and I'm tempted to move to a CityFibre provider which is now in our street. Looking at the list of providers, the only ones I know are Vodafone, TalkTalk, Zen and IDNet, then there are a load of random outfits. Reviews for Vodafone and TalkTalk are so terrible that I just can't bring myself to risk either despite the cheap prices. So it's Zen or IDNet... anyone had any experience with either? I was actually with IDNet for ADSL about 20 years ago, amazing service but you pay for it!

Only ever heard good things about Zen. And don't forget the reviews for TT and Voda are likely to be for their FTTC services (over Openreach infrastructure), not the CityFibre kit.

Well despite saying I didn't want to go with anyone I hadn't heard of before, we had toob fibre installed last week! Checked a lot of reviews and they seem to be the new favourites amongst the fast growing second tier of providers. £25 a month for 900mbps up/down on 18 month contract, I added on a static IP for an extra £8pm so £33pm. They're doing a £75 Amazon voucher signup offer so, considering how much I use Amazon, that's basically cash in the bank for me. Overall it works out a bit cheaper than I was paying Sky for 70mbps fibre. Gotta saying it was a great signup and installation experience, the router they provide is proper decent as well. Can recommend them for anyone thinking of making the hop to CityFibre.

I ended up getting the answer from OpenReach, they don't expect to have the infrastructure completed for Full Fibre until October 2024. Bugger.

I'm so jealous of stuff like this. We don't actually need that much speed but we basically have to pay the same amount for 40Mb out here in the countryside. We moved from London 2 years ago and BT have essentially decreased our internet speed by 50% and increased the price 25%. I'd leave but we wouldn't save much and internet wouldn't be faster. Plus we have had quite a few line external issues here and BTs favourable relationship with openreach actually helps. Every time I report a fault someone comes within 48hrs.

The landlord and/or property managers have done a deal so one company provides internet to my building. Obviously it's shit, and I haven't got the password for the router to change any settings. Take a look at their website: tele-data-systems.com/

My favourite detail is the huge 'call us' at the bottom and a teeny-tiny email link. We're a long way from Silicon Valley.

Got the letter to say the CityFibre installation that was started six months ago is finally available to use. So far only Vodafone available here according to the CityFibre website so will wait a bit to see if we get Zen available. Currently paying £61 to BT for broadband only, which is fucking absurd, but they're the only provider we've been able to use for unknown reasons (we have a 300mb FTTC with them, which other providers seem unable to access, best they can get us is 40mb). Vodafone offering thrice the speed for half the price now.

Yeah, the 300Mb g.fast FTTC product was fairly short lived. Only a few suppliers actually offered it (I think Plusnet trialled it) Would've been ideal for me when I was stuck on FTTC, but they just stopped new rollouts in favour of FTTP.
15 months into a 24 month BT contract here and I wish I hadn't been so greedy and ordered the max package from the first ISP that offered it when FTTP went live. £55 + a hefty CPI increase in April and another to look forward to next year. Fuck that noise! Vodafone are offering the same package for £35 at the moment, but I guarantee those kind of offers won't be around for me at renewal time.

So according to the Openreach website "Great News! We're building in this exchange". So that's a bit of good news, no idea how long it will take though.
Alternatively, because somewhere between switching providers my boss was stitched up good and proper, we're lumbered with a 1G leased line that we neither want nor need, but I do have the opportunity to have it redirected to my house (as long as we're prepared to accept some additional contractual shafting from BT Local Business). I can't help feeling that ~£500 per month for a leased line is a waste of money when I can put up with 70mb for x amount of months and then get the same speed for a tenth of the price, on the other hand, it's not my money.

Virgin in the Midlands has been flaky all day, dropping packets all over the place. Can’t even sign into 2FA websites because it’s responding too slow
Now the repair time has moved from 19:00 tonight to 11:40 tomorrow

We have lost the copper phone line. Phone works ok over the Internet. No outages or power cuts thankfully, or i'd be regretting losing the copper line!
Our full tilt contract with bt ends in april, so i guess I'll need to see what's available as it's pretty expensive & whilst the speed is nice, I am probably paying for more than we need. Unless i can get a reasonable deal mind. 😀

We've had a letter through finally to say that full fibre is coming to my street and now there is visible working bring carried out. Feel like I've been waiting years stuck on 80mb
Contract with plusnet has just expired so I'm primed and ready to jump. What's the deal with the hardware as I have a very particular setup and don't want to fuck with it. One of the reasons I won't be going back to sky cos their router sucks balls
I currently have a PNet router where everything is disabled and it acts purely as the modem and all traffic is piped into an archer 6000 WiFi hub loaded with antenna and 8 eth ports.

If it's openreach fibre you'll get a small box internally (ONT) and ethernet cable goes from that to your router. With BT I never even plugged their router in (which is a good thing seeing as it got lost in transit). I just set up a PPPoE connection and used whatever generic credentials I found online. Other ISPs may need to be contacted to get your credentials, so you may need to temporarily set up their kit.

So at the end of September, after moving to a new house, I went to Fastweb (an internet provider in Italy) and signed a contract for the fiber. It was up to 2.5Gb/s, they said.
After some fuckery, and a couple failed attempts to get a tech guy here to install the line, the store called and said there were some kind of network congestion issues in my area or whatever, and I needed to downgrade to an up to 200Mbps DSL line for the time being in order to speed up the activation process, and I could upgrade back to fiber after a few days. Of course the price was the same, heh. Didn't have much of a choice because providers here all use the same line anyway, so I was like, alright.
Anyway, the modem is finally here, and my first glorious speedtest says... 40Mbps. Not quite what I was hoping for.
It better be true that I can ask for a speed upgrade soon, because it's kind of depressing right now. I get it's an old building and quite far from the city center, but still. Their website said I was reached by the fiber, and I have seen the cabinet downstairs so I know it's not a mistake. But no idea how long it will take for them to upgrade me after I ask. If they could do it, they would have done it from the start, right?

So had 1gig fttp installed yesterday. I'm currently getting faster upspeed than I am down. 90 mbs down, 110mbs up. That's a config fuckup, isn't it?

Gigabit but only getting 90mbps?! Proper fuck up I'd say!
(Although it's not unusual for my 300mbps line to have slightly higher upload either)

Youfibre email on black friday offered me 1gb upgrade for £25 a month, spent a day doing speed test on some wireless devices and hit about 160mb max, my wired devices hit the full 1gb. No price rises with this company for 2 years so happy with it and may grab a WiFi 6 router myself soon.
