I signed up for notifications from Virgin in case they ever install in my area (extremely unlikely, but you never know). Cheeky cunts sent me a "a quick update on our services in your area" email that was actually them trying to sell me their Homepass mesh system thing. I'm in half a mind to complain to Ofcom about that!
As above gfast was canned before it reached my area, so I just need to wait for FTTP to roll out, which could be ages seeing as we're not in a priority rollout area. I'm just glad that at least I get nearly full whack out of my FTTC connection.

I'm with BT and they are certainly not the cheapest. But in fairness, in all the time I have been with them, I have also never had an issue, so I don't begrudge paying them the dosh that I do. Just saw that I can upgrade my speed from 300 to 900 mbps, for an extra £3 a month. If I had opted to change my tariff to exclude a landline, it would have only been an extra £1.
I am excited for them to turn the tap on and get that 900mbps. Which will get used for only my PS5 and Xbox Series X when downloading massive games. Nothing else needs that speed. I wonder if I can get a steady download speed of 500mbps or thereabouts. Because if that happens, it will have been worth it. Downloaded Marvel Avengers yesterday. 120GB took almost two hours to download. What an outrage! Hashtag first world problems.

Yeah I've had various issues over the years, so stuck with BT now as they just work hassle free.

Man was not meant to know such speeds! I am now downloading games, just for the fun of it! I should say that I can only achieve that speed hardwired. Which is all good, since my Xbox, PS5, Sky box and TV are all hardwired. Doing a speedtest on my phone tops out at about 310mbps. Which is fine, since I really only wanted that speed on my consoles for downloading 100GB+ games. There is no app I can think of that I need to download at 900mbps+ speeds.

I was happy when I moved and was told I could have 60mb and it went up to 72mb after a couple of weeks.
Apparently my postcode is on the list for "rural gigabit fibre upgrade, 2022", so that'll be nice.

To be fair, if you want 70MB+ then Virgin is normally your only option afaik, unless you live in Hyperoptic areas. Quite a lot of places have been upgraded to G.Fast. I cant get hyperoptic but I do get 160mb from sky (or another provider if I switched). I would have recommended Sky wholeheartedly last year but in the last six months they regularly seem to get the tea boy to configure their DNS servers. Clearly, I'm not as smart as I thought I was. For the not so smart, can you explain how poorly configured DNS servers affect your internet experience? (I used to be on Sky as well, but changed for one simple reason. When browsing Twitter on my phone, it would write often not load up images. Switched from Sky to BT, problem solved. First world problems)

Should be £15 cheaper than BT and twice as fast (100Mbps). ..or more expensive than BT (£45) and 20 times as fast (1000mbps). They're just taking their time about it.

I wish we could have fttp, but alas it is not to be. Sky reckon I'm getting around 60ish mbps which does the job ok and BT have no plans to ever make it go faster.
I've not put any research into what the requirements for fttp are other than BT not being arseholes so I'm going to go with that as the reason I don't have it.

robthehermitIt's a pretty costly upgrade for Openreach to do - brand new fibreoptic cabling in overhead lines etc and it then needs to go all the way into every house that gets it. They tend to focus on higher population areas/ones that are likely to have a higher takeup rate. Rural community fibre partnerships are pretty much people ganging together and saying we have x number of guaranteed punters, which moves things forward a bit quicker. I'm basically fucked as there's quite an elderly population around me and no chance of them giving a shit about anything faster than FTTC.

Yeah, the take up wouldn't be that great for them, our local exchange only serves about 1900 homes, again mostly an ageing population (the joys of rural living). The annoying thing is the exchange is at the end of our road, quite literally a stones throw away if I tried hard enough.

Anyone have experience of G Network? THey've laid fibre in my road and it looks they're the only otion for 'ultra fast' speeds. I have 65mpbs at the moment which is fine most of the time, but I still have to make sure nothing is downloading or streaming when I have important calls on Zoom. I don't htink it will be good enough for xbox game streaming either.
INterested n the service and the installation - is there lots of drilling and faffing?

Move into a new place in April, previous owner had virgin fibre so I'll probably sign up for that.
I'm not really a heavy user and don't want their shitty TV so probably get the M100 Fibre Broadband for £24 a month. I appreciate their support is shite but I can't imagine I'll be contacting them that often.
Is it worth replacing their bog standard router?

You do still have to use it but you can put it into Modem mode and attach a real router behind it. The reason it's crap isn't actually virgin, it's their choice of chipset. It runs on Intels Puma chip which has a lot of flaws which lead to unreliability under load. So when it's just being a modem it's fine, ask it to do WiFi, DNS etc on top and it melts. www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2018/08/intel-coughs-to-puma-cpu-flaw-that-hit-virgin-media-hub-3-router.html

I am moving house in two fucking days. Two. Like a kid a Christmas.
Anyway, I need new internet. I can get 900Mbps Community Fibre, which is 27 quid per month on 24 month contract plus a few other little sweeteners. Seems like a pretty good deal. Anyone used them before?
Also... I've noticed they have an offer for another fiver a month to install a Mesh system throughout the house. Given our new place is a terraced jobbie with 3 floors, this is an attractive option.
I've never had Mesh before. Is it great? Am I better off buying the gear and setting up a system myself? Typically how many routers do you need per floor?

That's a bloody bargain. Paying £55 for BT at the moment as we're an openreach only area and they were the only ones to offer the full 900. Haven't used them but haven't heard anything bad about them.
£120 extra over two years for mesh does seem pretty good too, but might be total shit of course.

What mesh do they use? Might be better investing in your own - they'll claim means diagnostics aren't as effective but tbh, with a big phat line like that, you'll be golden. Good price too.

Not 100%, but looks like Linksys dual-band Wi-Fi 6 routers. Possibly Velop? If that's meaningful to you. I'm always slightly wary of letting broadband providers bundle on extras like these, but this does seem cheap. Looking online, a couple of decent Mesh Satellites is like £250. Again, £120 extra for 2 years seems like a good deal.
Not sure what happens to the routers at end of the 2 years though. One Reddit post suggests you are actually renting them.

Ditched Virgin for Community Fiber. 1gb, £25.00 a month, first 6 months free, and upload speeds that match download speeds. And a router that is half fucking decent.
Of course Virgin had no records of us cancelling the contract, and charged us 2 further months, at £76.00 a month.
Got the money back after 3 hours on the phone, I'm not joking.
Stay clear of Virgin, bunch of cunts.

Yeah, not surprised that you're effectively renting them. Lots of decent options for less than £250 though. The TP Link Decos or Orbi 1800 are good options it seems.

We've got Velops. I run them in bridge mode (ie, wired) and they work great.
I got them on sale though, so it was about 150 for 3.

I bought some very base level Orbi in lockdown and they're pretty good. Only £100 for 3 I think. The app is crap and they keep trying to push their kids content manager and security but otherwise coverage and speeds are good.

Most/all ISP are crap at customer service as the actual backend of stuff is fairly fixed (and for many exactly the same actual physical infrastructure) and the only way they can compete on price is to cut customer service and support roles.

I'm gunna get Community Fibre, just question of whether I get their Mesh deal. Think I'll call them and find out if rented or owned. Former and I'll just do it myself.
Guessing their isn't much to their expert Mesh optimisation service. Presumably a bloke putting the nodes in different places till the dial goes high.

We pay 3 quid a month for the extra thingy, for a year. So, rented I guess. Useful though, as in the summer we can just unplug, and use an outside socket to boost WiFi in the garden, which is patchy at best. Couldn't be arsed to source our own widget, went for the easy option. Or lazy option 😃

I've been waiting ages for Community Fibre to come to us. We got a card through the door over a year ago saying they were coming in the next few months, but 9 months later when my contract with Plusnet ran out it was still 'coming soon' so had to renew again.
