Agree about NPC quests. I was doing Patches earlier, he starts off easy enough in a cave in an early spot, gives you strong clues about how to get to VM and goes there himself as a merchant - great.
But then after finishing VM, he relocates to the Shaded Castle boss room and then back to his starting cave without, as far as I can see, any flipping clue about why or whatever.
On a positive, I really like the Yura and Latenna quests and Nepheli is pretty good too, with a nice reward for piecing it together

They are mostly very cool quests for sure. I think Ranni's was the main one I got stuck on. I'm not even sure where now, but it was such an important storyline I wanted to make sure I got it all right.

I feel like they took that "randomly bumping into relocated NPCs on the way" thing from earlier Souls games and just did the same in Elden Ring, with no regard for what a different kind of game it is. In the smaller (and mostly more linear) Souls games, there was a somewhat reasonable chance you'd come across them in the intended way and order--especially in DS1, where there wasn't even fast travel for the first half of the game so there was an even greater likelihood of finding NPCs on the way back and forth.
But in Elden Ring, with its gigantic fast travel open world, expecting the player to come across certain locations in a specific order at a specific time (especially in Hyetta's and Millicent's questline) is just madness. The chances are so microscopic it's completely unreasonable. And God forbid you forgot to exhaust their dialogue in the previous location so they'll stay there until the end of time because they still had one sentence to say.
Well maybe you're not supposed to find everything out yourself because solving Souls games is intended to be a community effort. But I hate looking everything up online and I think this system doesn't work at all in this game.
People bash the handholdy quest marker system in games like Skyrim--and I agree that's not great--but I think this is actually worse. If I'm being told the exact location of an NPC anyway, I prefer to be told right away in the game to looking it up in a Wiki or Youtube video.

I think they have the player community in mind, not individual players. We figure out the quests collectively, it's part of the experience with new Souls games.

I never really got “sick” of Elden Ring but I definitely didn’t love it like some other FROM games
It was big and did impel you to see what’s next very well, which is a key element for me
However I don’t recall any epic boss encounters or intriguing NPCs. It all felt a little sterile
Maybe that wolf guy, he was quite interesting
Wasn’t frustrating at all though

I definitely loved it - the main 'thread' of bosses and dungeons is up there any any Souls game for me.
By the end the caves, goals and catacombs got a little tiresome though.

The not so memorable bosses maybe due them getting copied later on but I still think there is enough wtf bosses for my liking.
Tree Sentinel, Margit, Dragon in the lake, Erdtree Avatars, Crucible Knights, Revenants, Godskin Duo, General Radahn, Malenia, Dragonlord Placidusax, Fire Giant, Maliketh, Godric, Lion Guardian, Ulcerated Tree Spirits, Radagon. All very memorable.
Best game they've done in my opinion. There is a bit of rose tinted specs when going back to the older games, some of the bosses were pretty dull or easily cheesed.
The chopping off of tails in Dark Souls was a great thing though. Added an element of spice to the fights.

There’s some brilliantly designed areas in ER - Stormveil, Volcano Manor, Haligtree are extremely well done. I think it does fade a bit towards the end, consecrated snowfield & MOTG aren’t up to much and not enjoyable to explore like Liurnia or Limgrave. Still finding new stuff, like the cave with two separate boss rooms, one obvious, one less so.
I really like the freedom you get at the start - get Torrent and head straight to Fort Faroth for Radagon’s soreseal if you like, get the bloodhound fang, upgrade it to +5 and take on some tougher enemies. Good stuff

I find that pretty standard with their games. Earlier sections are incredible and the later sections are like they just adding filler or ran out of time later in development.

Their DLCs usually fix that issue. Almost always very high quality late-game content.

Though it's my least favourite in the series I thought Dark Souls 2 had some decent areas in the late game areas.
Not hard when the middle run is Huntsman's Copse > Harvest Valley > Earthen Peak > The Pit > The Gutter > Black Gulch though.

Yeah, it gets a bad rap. I was playing a Souls game, I was happy.

Annnd that's my RL1 finished. Well technically there are still Malenia, Mogh and a few others left, but yeah that's not going to happen anytime soon. Fuck that.

Yeah, it gets a bad rap. I was playing a Souls game, I was happy. I do get the criticisms but it's still a Souls game and brought me the same proportion of joy and loathing that Dark Souls did. It didn't have the sheer genius vertical design but that's pretty much unique to the first game, at least in how brilliantly it is pulled off. Also /confesses in hushed tones/: I used to hang around in Earthen Peak getting summoned for Covetous Demon.

Right, that's the Platinum Trophy for PS5, which joins the 1000G on Xbox. Very tempted to go for the treble and do it all again on Steam before the DLC drops.
I'm not usually even remotely interested in achievements, I just absolutely adore this game.

Loaded up for the first time since completing and took me a good hour to get used to things again. Had forgotten some of the fucking awesome Faith spells I had, then returned to our favourite farming spot to farm the albinaurics and used the Sacred Relic Sword's R2 (Wave of Gold) to obliterate them in no time. Working to vigor 60 for the DLC (which is pre-ordered) and I'm sure there are parts of the map less explored, so will while away the time doing that.
Good to be back.

Other than the crucible knights I barely remember any of them bosses, I certainly couldn’t tell you what they look like anyway. I know I fought them all as I beat every boss but I’d have to look them up other than Malenia as I watched a few YouTube vids after I completed it and she was mentioned a few times as a tough fight

retro74I suppose it depends on how godlike you are at playing the game. My first go at ER and most of those bosses above gave me headaches. Now not so much now I've played it a few times and if you destroy them in 4 or 5 hits none of them are memorable. The same could be said about Dark Souls. The last time I played it the black knight dropped his greatsword. Everything was a breeze and most bosses died in under a minute. None of them were particularly challenging or have any special moves that I thought made them stand out. The only thing I could say is that some were very large so maybe a bit more memorable in that sense.

Talking about bosses - I vaporised Mohg last night! Unsure if I'm overlevelled (level 120ish) or if it was overly cheesy (I don't care!) but I shot him with the comet spell and then my Mimic Tear kept him distracted whilst I was able to stab him in the leg.
I think now onwards to the Haligree via Ordina (?) but honestly I tried that Evergaol with the invisible assassins about 5 times and then went to bed. Pretty aggravating!!
Oh yeah and I also finally found out about the bird that everyone was talking about below the cliff at Mohg's palace :joy

Impressions of the dlc getting out there. In short its more of the same. Not to say its a bad thing, the environments, legacy dungeons, bosses, new weapon types and spells all sound really good and makes it thr biggest DLC theyve done. But there are also reused enemy types from the base game too which sort of hampers on the sense of discovery including everyones favourite kind of tree spirit.

In case you don't know, the invisible assassins can be seen if you're holding the Sentry's Torch. It's obtained from the Hermit's Merchant north of Leyndell. That's not to say they're the only issue in this place, of course.

Tuffty - that works for me. I’d expect some things to be reused as we’re in the same universe. A big area to explore and all the rest of it sounds ace. Roll on the 21st

Somehow I doubt that anyone wants to be spoiled about DLC stuff (I certainly don't), but just in case, VaatiVidya has played some (thumbnail is safe enough so I'll link it):

Because of the plagiarism stuff? IMO he's done more than enough to make up for that in supporting other creators over the years.
Or you just don't like his style, which is totally fair enough?
