My Did anyone expect anything but frothing praise for this from all quaters? I enjoy From games but the zealotry of the fanbase is seriously off putting. The reason it took me so long to try the games was because I was sick of hearing about them My original comment. Funny that it got twisted into me not liking Dark Souls, being personally insulted, that I should STFU and not post in this thread

Things that were shit about Dark Souls:
-Blighttown was a choppy broken mess -Lost Izalith felt basically unfinished -Bed of Chaos -Shit PVP
There's probably heaps more.

Re:the gatekeeping and zealotry, I imagine it's true and if so it must be annoying. Call me sheltered, though, as I only ever interact with people here, and lurked in the EG threads. As such I've only come across people who love the games and actually delight in helping and giving advice to those starting them, stuck etc.
I'm now perversely curious now, though, and want to trawl the dark spaces of the internet chuckling at the git gud crowd...so, where do I start?

The original Demon's Souls thread was the nicest, most helpful place ever. The game was weird and opaque and everybody was in it together. Literally anything you could do to make life easier was fair play - this whole 'Git Gud' thing appeared once Dark Souls became a smash hit, best just to ignore it.

Oh and the Crystal Cave! Fuck that place too.
Souls community as a whole can be exceptionally gatekeeping, the amount of comments when watching a steam getting angry they're not using the weapon they like most or not playing it the optimal way is frustrating. I dont really get that in here tho.

I don't I have seen anyone say get good in any from software thread. Someone asks for advise and then there are many helpful replies straight away. God knows how many I've posted in sekiro and Bloodborne and I feel everyone else does the same.

I've contributed myself and all the people in those threads were cool

The EG/FG threads for soulsborne games are, I think, a bit of an anomaly in that people are helpful rather than dismissive. They do get quite an elitist cult following around the internet. But, yeah, I couldnt care less if they put something like a lower difficulty level in. I manage them just fine (because I'm amazing) but its no skin off my nose if someone is having a harder time and just wants to power through.
Also, I couldnt see a thread for it but Lies of P is looking good. Pinnochio x Bloodborne with the kind of gwaffics I think people were probably expecting elden ring to have.

Yeah I've been stupid enough to look through a few different subreddits while playing through various games in the series and it's a bit of a cesspool. The perceived skill level needed to beat the game seems to elicit the same reaction as telling someone they are shit at their job. I've honestly never seen gatekeeping on such a level like it with any other game.
Here's lovely though. I've used multiple EG threads for different games in the series as therapy and received nothing but help as I've done my usual 3 quarter completion and abandon job on them.

There's shit things about every soulsborne game to be fair. They are not perfect so I don't think it's hard to point out any flaws. I don't think that's a fair way of attacking them however as it's not really about that. Dark Souls tapped into something the gaming community had obviously needed at the time. Was it as hard as it was being made out to be? No. Of course not. But at a time where devs couldn't hold your hand anyfurther than if they'd grafted their own fingers to yours, it was a breath of fresh air (I know Demon's came first but as a platform exclusive it didn't have the impact of the first Dark Souls). There's a lot of love for the franchise borne out of that fact alone. Yes, lots of people give these games a free pass, and there are some out there that overlook all the flaws, but that's true of every popular game and franchise. You've got the die hards, the ones you really like it, the ones who can take it or leave it, and the ones who can't get on board with it at all. As I've said before. So what. it's just the internet. But there's no point in getting pissy in a thread made for the game (this is aimed at no-one in particular, just making the general point) that's likely going to be populated by people with an interest in said game, that have enjoyed the previous games the dev has done and want to be excited for the new game. So what. Fuck it. It's just a game. Let's get excited by it if we want. There's enough fucking bullshit in the world. A distraction from life is sometimes just the thing.
Sometimes people get TOO attached to things, and it's normally a symptom of something they are missing or feel they need in their lives, so they attack others who aren't on board with it. I tend to avoid these places, for anything I like. I'm not interested. Just treat this game as any other. If it looks good and you think you'll like it, get it. If it doesn't, don't.

Yeah, there are. Like Bloodborne which I think most people would agree is the best one (maybe) and it has its flaws, some pretty glaring. Like how the most lethal enemy in the game is the camera.
But, yes, I know the difficulty is a large part of its appeal but its quite a high barrier of entry that I really cant see the harm in lowering it for people who want that.

I think more than the difficulty, the reputation it has built up as being for hardcore gamers is more off putting for people. You can over level in all of them except Sekiro so the difficulty is already variable. I think an 'easy mode' where you start with 20/25 points in health and maybe 15/20 in stamina would be fine and take away the sting of learning the games

I think some people need a bit of an outlet to air their grievances sometimes. I'll be the first to admit I probably come across as a right whinging bastard about some games (CYBERRRRPUUUUUUUNK!!!!!!) but it's because if I turned to the Mrs and said "Fuck's sake, this game is a half finished piece of shit. I feel proper mugged off here" she'd probably try and turn herself in to the nonce police for having a relationship with a toddler.
Sometimes seeing someone going "Yeah, I'm finding that bit of the game a bit shit too" is as important as sucking each other off over how good it is.

They're just not as difficult as they are made out to be (stealth I'm amazing post). It's all pattern memory. What enemy / boss does what attack and when. The likes of Killzone 2, parts of FEAR 3 and Destiny 1&2 etc put soulsborne to shame, that's just three off the top of my head. There's many more.
But yes, if they can add optional ways to make it easier for some that struggle then I'm all for that as well.

Solid-SCB- Yeah, again, that's why the EG souls threads were always good. There was none of that mindless fawning. Everyone recognised all the shit bits for what they are. I think DS2 is one of my favourite games ever created for example. Yet there are big chunks of it that are fucking wank. Nothing's perfect.

Talking of Destiny. Doing one of those damn raids is one of the most difficult things I've ever done. Yet it's soulsborne that gets the rep for being inaccessible!

It's the nerves that get me for 9 out of every 10 deaths in these. I'm a total shithouse. When I go through the gates into a boss room my arms turn into fucking haribo jelly worms and there's nothing I can do to control it unless I have a couple of beers. Which is a problem in itself as then I'll have one too many and be fucking useless anyway.

Earthen Peak, Harvest Valley, Iron Keep, Frigid Outskirts, Iron Passage, Cave of the Dead, Doors of Pharros, Grave of Saints, Black Gulch.
There's probably more.

I agree, but the big difference is that Destiny's raids are end-game. You can put tens of satisfying hours into Destiny without ever touching a raid, whereas the Souls games kick you in the balls repeatedly the moment you leave the tutorial area.
