I think the fact you get jumped on for saying anything but overwhelming praise says a lot But that wasn't the case in the old place, and that isn't the case here? I think From games are obtuse sacks of derivative wank with spikes on. Sometimes I play and enjoy the games in spite of that. Nobody has given me shit for holding that opinion. So what's your point? That it literally just happened?

What the hell are you on? A network test was just released for a game that a lot of people are super excited for. A lot of super excited people came in the thread to be super excited about the game. Your post saying you didn't like their games was literally followed up by someone agreeing. Nobody is getting jumped on for not liking the games.
Unless our definitions of "jumped on" are some distance apart?

No, I was just taking you at face value and seeing what the beef was? There wasn't one. OK, then. Hilarious work! Keep it up.

Humour is hard to get across in posts though. You need to jizz some emojis over it. That's why they exist. Sideways smileyface. That's what I do.

Well, in my experience, back in the old place Souls threads were mostly friendly and comforting spaces where people offered advise and help almost to anyone... One of the first people I befriended in XBL was Elathron, an EG user who offered to help me out in Dark Souls, we met in Undead Burg and he showered me with a nearly complete arsenal of fully upgraded weapons and armour sets, upgrade materials and whatnot. Similarly, IIRC, our own malek86 helped me beat Fume Knight in DS2 and I'm sure there are lots of stories like this. Not sure where I'm going with this, but there I said it...

Just preordered having watched SkillUp, like I wasn’t going to anyway. What a beautiful rich world, possibly made via the time saved after re-using weapon animations, etc, and Amen to that. That world, its lore, creatures, mechanisms, whatever, are the wet dream Bethesda or Ubisoft have before waking up and shitting out another formulaic beige poop again, only this time 4% bigger and with raytracing (at 23fps).
In your face Auntie 🤗

It's From. It'll be 23fps without ray-tracing.

I hope we can all be friends again one day Maybe just STFU? Game looks amazing. After making ambitious plans to go dark on this and get to release day spoiler free, I've caved in completely and have gorged myself on SkillUp and Vaati's preview videos. Pumped for the game, disappointed in myself.

If magic is OP I will abuse the shit out of it, the only thing that made me hesitant was I wasn't sure I wanted to slog through a massive game as I don't really get the time to. Will happily play through as a tourist and see the sights with a bit less of the stress

On a side note, before I played them, I heard a lot about how tense is it as you carry around more and more souls and struggling with the idea of carrying on and potentially losing them or cashing in It made me think there was some kind of modifier attached to them - say, after you're holding 1000 souls, you start getting 1.2x as many, then at 1500 1.3xm, etc so there's an element of risk/reward. Losing all your souls and not getting back to pick them up is quite rare in my experience and there's no reason to not spend them at the first opportunity The mechanic was certainly a concern in Demon's and the original Dark before Lordvessel, but with teleporting from the off in everything since, it's lessened the whole concept. Doesn't mean to say I've ever lost 70k souls at any point taking a risk, and possibly welled up a little, no siree. Watched a few bits of the various videos doing the rounds, and seems it'll be to DS3 what DS2 was to DS. GIANT ENEMY CRAB and the knight types were glaring copypaste, along with a couple of mini-bosses lifted wholesale from DS3/Sekiro, and more than a few hints to certain covenants/Dark Souls concepts. It really did seem more like a copied DS3 with some GRRM flavour text thrown in, and perhaps there was some expectation of something feeling more "new" ? But then you had that "thing" on the beach and a few more of the enemy types where new tactics come into play, so hopefully there'll be a bit more mystery past the early stages. A feeling of familiarity over numerous games ("oh, it's a previous enemy type, ok") could be an issue unless it' snatched away by the mid/late game, and hopefully that doesn't mean it devolves into whirlling spammy speed nonsense that I really didn't enjoy at all in DS3. You can see the possibility of a "it's just another DS2 ugh" backlash, certainly. But I liked DS2, so I should be good.

It does seem slightly odd that they said, right dark souls is done and then proceed to make another one with a different name.

Losing all your souls and not getting back to pick them up is quite rare in my experience and there's no reason to not spend them at the first opportunity Lords of the Fallen was exactly like that. The more exp points you kept in your inventory, the more you'd get from each enemy. Banking them for level ups would reset the multiplier. The mechanic was certainly a concern in Demon's and the original Dark before Lordvessel, but with teleporting from the off in everything since, it's lessened the whole concept. Doesn't mean to say I've ever lost 70k souls at any point taking a risk, and possibly welled up a little, no siree. Pretty sure DS1 let you level up at any bonfires, so even the lack of Lordvessel was never an issue for that. It was only a problem in the sense that you couldn't fast travel around, which was super annoying, no matter what purists may say. Frankly, DS stopped being all that tense once I figured out that even losing a lot of souls was no big deal. It didn't happen often, because once I had enough souls that I didn't want to lose them, I'd warp straight to a bonfire. But even the few times it happened, I just shrugged it off.

I must remain strong and not watch the videos! I have friends over Saturday but I've already told them I'm going out for dinner around 19:30. So as soon as I've kicked them out I'll run to my console and play elden ring until 22:00 when the test ends. Sadly I can't do tomorrows test I am away....should have brought the Xbox!

Did anyone expect anything but frothing praise for this from all quaters? I enjoy From games but the zealotry of the fanbase is seriously off putting. The reason it took me so long to try the games was because I was sick of hearing about them Amazing games get lots of people excited. Shocker. Next thing you know , Platformer game fans will be excited about the next 3D Mario game. So annoying !

If you think Dark Souls is shit, then maybe it would be better to not play a game that is expressly a follow-up to Dark Souls. Or go out of your way to comment on a thread about it.
I mean, do what you want, but it feels like there may be better uses of your energy and time.

All I said is that there are a certain subset of Dark Souls fans who take it too seriously. I can see now that I was wrong I stand with you on that one. It's the gatekeeperiest game out there by a long stretch. An fair bit of (valid) criticism gets steered into "You just don't get it/aren't good enough". That being said most people, especially here, are super helpful of relative outsiders/casual fans like myself. One of my fondest moments in this first year of owning a PS5 was me hacking away at the Adjudicator boss on Demon's Souls while Quaddy basically acted as my life coach in the party chat after our co-op lobby got disconnected and I got left on my own in the boss room shitting my pants. The 'skill' level of the game does bring out a lot of weird baggage certain people carry around with them though.
