Panic over- found someone showing an Elder’s Ring on a new streaming service, xhamster or something. Doesn’t look much like the previews though? !?

SkillUp has a 25 minute video up. He’s full of praise for it.
Theradbrad also has a 30 min video which is literally from the start of the game. He’s awful at playing games but always gets stuff from publishers.

Did anyone expect anything but frothing praise for this from all quaters? I enjoy From games but the zealotry of the fanbase is seriously off putting. The reason it took me so long to try the games was because I was sick of hearing about them

I'm very much the same. The only "Souls" game I've played is Bloodborne, which I semi-enjoyed for 5-6 hours, but then stopped playing it and never returned, due to complete lack of interest.
I found the style of challenge frustrating and unrewarding - which I fully expected - but I found the general level design uninspiring, the combat style inelegant and clunky in execution (I "get" it's meant to be like that) and the RPG elements to be limited.
In a nutshell, I just didn't appreciate any individual facet of the game, apart from maybe the art design. From what I've seen of Elden Ring, it doesn't seem to embrace the open world in any interesting ways, and offers more of the same.
I think zealotry is a good way to describe the way people perceive these games.

Not surprised that it's favourable, no. But it's nice to see that the new design features and the move to open-world are working well. I'm certainly quite excited about it after the vids today, whereas I was aware of it's release but not really following it until now. I might smash through Demon's Souls over Xmas in prep, and finally knock that off the backlog.

I'm just saying people should moderate their excitement. You're not children. Look in a mirror; you're old and wrinkly now, many of you grey and bald - act it

Yes, remember to turn off the playful childlike part of your brain that enjoys things, and fully embrace grey boring monotonous adulthood.
Alternatively, get excited about things you enjoy, and fuck what anyone else thinks.

Zealotry in games?! Never!
Just play what you enjoy and try not to get too upset by people saying they think something you don’t like is great.

I think it looks like a remix of Skyrim, but with harder combat. APPARENTLY THAT'S WORTH GETTING ALL WET OVER.
Looks like fucking Skyrim, too. From two generations ago.

My comment wasn't serious but the fact people are so bent out of shape over it kind of proves my point. No sense of humour over it

Humour is hard to get across in posts though. You need to jizz some emojis over it. That's why they exist. Sideways smileyface.

But it's the 'the games are hard but always fair', 'it's never the game's fault', 'git gud', everything is 'like Dark Souls' crowd that annoy me. Many of those things aren't remotely true but they all say it like they're collectively deluded. It is zealotry

Which was more offensive? Poopooing From Software's games or mocking hairlines? :shocked emoji face:

By and large the games aren't even that difficult, the penalty for failing is just quite high. You can keep retrying indefinitely though and it's more about being cautious than anything. The games don't require that much skill. I'd put them below character action games like Bayo or DMC which require memorising button combos and quick reflexes. It was the silly Prepare to Die PC port that started all that stuff. Didn't do the series any favours in my opinion

I don't honestly pay any attention to that stuff. Don't let it rile you. It's the internet being the Internet. Who gives a toss what anyone else thinks?
Anyway, just git gud you prick.

I think the fact you get jumped on for saying anything but overwhelming praise says a lot But that wasn't the case in the old place, and that isn't the case here? I think From games are obtuse sacks of derivative wank with spikes on. Sometimes I play and enjoy the games in spite of that. Nobody has given me shit for holding that opinion. So what's your point?

On a side note, before I played them, I heard a lot about how tense is it as you carry around more and more souls and struggling with the idea of carrying on and potentially losing them or cashing in It made me think there was some kind of modifier attached to them - say, after you're holding 1000 souls, you start getting 1.2x as many, then at 1500 1.3xm, etc so there's an element of risk/reward. Losing all your souls and not getting back to pick them up is quite rare in my experience and there's no reason to not spend them at the first opportunity
